Pink Floyd AND Stephane Grappelli, fantastic. I saw Grappelli at a concert in the Opera House St Hellier, Jersey on my birthday in 1977, what a fantastic gig. Happy days.
@miraposajehano4309
@miraposajehano4309 5 жыл бұрын
Most people ignore this but it is the great Stéphane Grappelli that plays the violin on this version. He was recording in another studio close by and the band ask him if he would play on that song. He accepted but the band finally decided for another version of the song.
@harryh.2464
@harryh.2464 8 ай бұрын
If they had used this version on the album it wouldn't have been "wish you were here" anymore, it would have been "violin song" by ~ Pink Grappelli Waters definitely did not want to share the spotlight (and royalties ) on what was probably their best song. Grappelli takes it to another level.
@testicuslargus6477
@testicuslargus6477 6 ай бұрын
@harryh.2464 It's always Waters' fault huh?, the reason they didn't use this version is due to the violin being muted. They didn't realize until years later that it's buried really low under the mix.
@alexbowman7582
@alexbowman7582 5 ай бұрын
Was it also he who played violin on SOYCD? I remember reading an interview where one of the band said they had a small violin part near the beginning but later nearly completely mixed it out so it's just audible.

I have loved this song since it came out when I was a small child. Naturally a song this sad was difficult to hear at times. (For all of us)! As a child - It was about my dad. Divorce blows. As a teenager - It was so romantic! Good old teenage angst. (I'm gonna die! I haven't seen him in 3 days! Is he mad at me)? Age 26 - Why can't we spend more time together? (When we met my husband worked 6 days a week. I only saw him on Sundays for years. But they were damn good Sundays)! Age 54 - My husband passed away in 2019. Just now is the first time I've actually been able to listen to the whole song without having to turn it off. It wasn't easy, but at least now I have my song back again. 🥲 Thank you for the memories... #pinkfloyd😘

So you think you can tell Heaven from hell? Blue skies from pain? Can you tell a green field From a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? Did they get you to trade Your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? Did you exchange A walk on part in the war For a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl Year after year Running over the same old ground What have we found? The same old fears Wish you were here

The visuals of the camera panning left and right and a lot of other excerpts are from the film Live at Pompeii. It shows them recording some of Darkside of the Moon at Abby Road Studios as well.

The violinist was Stéphane Grappelli, an excellent jazz musician. He recorded in the adjacent studio in the same time as Floyd recorded this song and he was invited to play with the band. The judgement/reception of this version by the band members was mixed so this is why you can not hear the violin clearly on the "official" version.

Its funny when I was a kid I had no idea who syd was. And now that im older I understand the pain of not having some or your favorite ppl around. Cherish every moment. Good and bad. It's a sick,and crazy world and no one can truly live it alone. Cherish your soul mates even if they're friends they are still bound to your soul,and memory. Nothing is an accident we are meant to connect/reconnect with old loved ones from past existences Life is truly strange. Stay up!

I think this version would have been nearly as memorable BUT the version they went with is more simple, more harsh in its solitude and that is the effect that I think they were after. The Violin actually gives it too much life, for me at least.

I absolutely agree. The power of this song stands in the fact that it’s raw, it’s direct and simple. As if someone suddenly took the guitar and started singing his sorrow, pouring the words directly from his heart, without filters.

British bands has technical artistry In creating outstanding music. High quality production value. Very dedicated and passionate. True craftsmen of the trade. So much clarity in their songs. But those days are gone. Hip hop shittified the day it appeared till today.

The great thing about Pink Floyd is you don't have to be from a certain place to understand it. It applies to life at its simplest forms. I've lived in both a congested environment and a rural one, and this song and every Pink Floyd song applies to my life in both locations.
