Witcher 3 - Monster Gwent Deck Build Strategy - 4K Ultra HD

An overview of my Monster Gwent deck, the build along with the strategy and thoughts behind how I set it up and why. (... as a side note, I'm sorry this one had a different "flavor" than my typical videos, there was bit of Tequila that was sacrificed in the making of this video... oh and "nomiker" is a combination of nomenclature and moniker :) I'm creating new words.)

I wish Caranthir was in this deck. He's the only member of the Wild Hunt trio that didn't join his buddies in the monster deck. If he was in this deck as a hero card, he'd be a medic.

For anyone watching this video in 2016+: Since this video was made, the Arachas muster has been nerfed hard. The three Arachas melee cards, if played, no longer muster the Arachas siege card. This greatly reduces the muster's strength while removing any built-in scorch resistance the muster had. As such, it is important to play the Vampire muster first, if possible, and, failing that, to use an Elemental as scorch bait. Note, however, that the Arachas siege card will still muster the three melee cards. All in all, this makes the monster deck quite a bit less powerful.

My monster deck triumphed over all at the high stakes tourn., at max diff., so let me tell you; The leader card that allows you to draw a card OF YOUR CHOICE from your deck by discarding 2 from your hand is the best of them all. It is simply the tool that CAN give you the more chances to win against any possible deck. Yes, you do run lean on cards with a monster deck but, the seasoned gwenter will know how to best make that sacrifice by reading his opp.'s strategy, taking into consideration the opp.'s leader & faction as well as the current state of the board. It brings to one most of the other leader services for the price of 2 cards. You can draw a weather card, a horn/dandelion or a Yen for medic etc More often than not you'll be in this situation where a specific card you 're not holding will make the difference bettween winning or losing and only one leader can guarantee to give you just that.

at about 19:00 you said something about the other guy having used his villentretenmerth, meaning that you shouldnt worry. then again, that guy could be rocking a medic card since scoiatel/nilfgaard/northern realms all have medics, which could revive their scorch close combat card. in addition, there are also neutral medic cards such as yennefer of vengerberg. another way this is outplayed is if the guy is rocking the eredin leader that acts as a medic, so honestly theres no way around it, youve always got to be careful no matter what.

You are indeed correct about the Destroyer Of Worlds (discard 2, pick 1 of your choice from the deck) in that it is significantly inferior to the Commander of the Red Riders (commander's horn for your close combat row). However if by any reason you run a large monster deck (personally I've included every unit out there, even Endregas and Wyverns), it's got an extra advantage: It doesn't shuffle the deck. You can for example go way up, look at the top 2 cards, decide if it's worth picking The Mysterious Elf, and when to play it. In general, I end up with exactly 2 useless cards in my hand and this allows me to pick ANY card, depending on the opponent, this can be another muster group, dandelion (recommended if you have Yen...you can use him twice), Avallac'h, Kayran, Villentretenmerth, etc. So in general, it's not great, but it's better than it sounds. I too was like "wtf is this" the first time I used it. But with the right deck it can work wonders, especially in the tabletop card game if you are using the whole decks (we do that sometimes with friends, play with every unit in our deck and 10 special cards).

Additionally, I find hitting the unit minimum with this deck seriously debilitating. Think about it, suppose you run 23 units like you do and 6 - 7 special cards so 30 cards in total, 12 out of which are muster cards split into 3 groups. You draw 10 cards at the beginning and there is a massive chance that you end up drawing so many of the same muster group(s) that redrawing cannot possibly help you get rid of all of them. Especially when the analogy of muster cards to other cards is such, redrawing has a lot of potential to make things worse actually. In general, dumping Vesemir and the Fiend (STR 6 close combat cards) is a good way to increase the number of non-muster cards and a good way to add some powerful scorch protections which can also benefit from the commander's horn, unlike the elementals. You can also add some of the STR 5 close combat cards (I personally love the artwork of the Frightener and the Plague Maiden so I include them all the time xD) which can themselves shield your arachas and benefit from a commander's horn. In general the key with the Monster's deck is that, because you've got so many muster groups, you need more non-muster cards so you can easily end up having 26 - 28 units. I personally actually have 34 - 36 because I include all the STR 5 cards but that's not necessary, it's more of a playstyle thing. And of course, more units means you need more specials so if you do end up doing it this way, absolutely include all 3 commander's horns because the chance you are going to get one of them increases.

my Reasoning for why i use the Monster Leader destroyer of worlds is for when i draw too many of one monster type and am missing one for example i draw like 3 Arachas and no Crone ill discard 2 arcachas to gain my 3 crones. or if im playing against scoia'tel and i draw like 2 decoys ill discard those to draw my elf or yennefer or whatever else i'm missing. i use decoys usually to gain spy's but scoia'tel has none but to be honest iv'e had that leader save my ass more than once i run 3 commander horns and dandelion so the other leader isn't necessary if i don't draw horn or dandelion ill use my leader to draw one. But i understand what your saying too it's all matter of opinion really. Oh and if i drop mysterious elf and get duplicate muster cards ill use my leader to discard them and get something more important.

A general tip: always run the least amount of cards the game demands, in Gwent case 22, in MTG Standard 60. It always increases the chance of getting your best cards.

I've been using your setup but instead of putting any fog or rain cards in the deck I'm running all 3 Skellige storm cards and trying to get 1 per hand. I love the skellige storm cards for this deck in particular because most of your points from a monster deck come from the combat line and these storm cards are rain and fog in one card. Just something that is working for me.

just a guess, but I bet you're going to say your least favourite muster group is the crones because they are all the same value and thus can be scorched very easily with the dragon card (I do it all the time when facing monsters) 11:10

Yeah, I've heard something changed in a later patch that dicked up the point values. You can still protect them if you have a higher point value card in that line like a random neutral card or something. Haven't given it much thought.

You probably wont see this, but i would like it if you made an update on these with cards that cam from the dlc‘s e.g. should i use toad instead of maybe the arachas behemoth because of the muster nerf? Or should i replace something else with it? or just not use it?

If i were you I'd get rid of the behemoth but keep the rest of the muster group. Adding the toad will work wonders, but sometimes against certain decks there won't be anything to scorch so it'll become just a 7 point card. Even then it's 100% worth having in your deck, especially if you're running some important cards in the ranged section (Gaunter O'Dimm's darkness cards [not Gaunter himself]). In those situations it'll act as a scorch protect, and when it has something to scorch on the opponents deck it will absolutely clap cheeks. Hope this helps if you actually see it lol.

Wow the monsters deck analysis went for almost an hour hahha, and i noticed you cursing a lot more than usual in this video, which was really entertaining to be honest. Just a few things from my experience playing gwent in this game- - there are only 2 clear weather cards in the game. i've played every merchant there is to play until the point they stopped giving me cards (i didn't get the trophy "collect them all", since i missed the cards from the velgubud ball, so i continued receiving cards till there were none left in the exhaustive pool). this is a known bug, since you are suppose to start the game with 2 clear weather cards instead of 1. - also only 2 torrential rain weather cards, i never received the third either. - for me personally, i tend to count the musters as somewhat one card as whole; so i believe running a few unit cards more than the 22 minimum in ur monsters deck, is important to help increase your chances of not drawing duplicates of your musters, in your opening hand. - ditto on the elementals man, i run all of the 6 value elementals as well so that i have another avenue instead of close combat units, if that situation arises where biting frost spoils the day, you can place commanders horn to boost those siege units. willypallmall HK LOL, I was wondering if someone would comment on that after I wound up watching it again Saturday morning to make sure the quality was OK before I posted it. I normally don't record on Friday nights as that's might night to just drink and relax, but I got a wild hair and decided to knock out the monster deck and that was the result. I usually try to keep the, let's call it "color", in these to a minimum. This is why we don't drink and make KZbin videos on the same night. :) Glad it wasn't just me on those cards, as they were the only two I needed after I got my achievement and when I went back to get them, I stopped getting cards and just figured it was a screwy mechanic with the achievement. I've played with upping my "one-off" card count as well, but more often than not it has burned me by keeping me from drawing into my muster groups, so I have reverted to keeping it low. After i won my last card from playing merchants, the merchants left that normally offered you cards from the random pool after beating them, gave me absolutely nothing not even any crafting materials or whatever, so i can see why u thought it was some buggy mechanic. tbh i've found that i will often draw duplicates of my muster groups, more often than i would get burned and not draw into them at all, but yeh thats card games for ya, RNGesus baby lol.

willypallmall HK I just love to watch other people play the monster deck and while holding the muster groups in their hand they play Spy cards or decoy off Spy cards that get played on their side then play them back and then they wind up drawing additional cards from a muster group they are already holding. Actually, I cringe and then yell at them as if they can hear me. ;)

The only way i could see the Bringer of Death leader card being useful is maxing out your deck with monster cards... then the chance of your muster cards being in your deck instead of your hand is higher... then you can use the leader card to pull a needed muster card out of your deck that your missing... i know bloating your deck with cards might not be the best choice but this method could increase your potential playable cards and really take advantage of muster...

When you're building the bulk of your deck around hero cards and muster group cards, I don't find that one medic makes much difference. You could always get lucky and draw her when you are playing against an opponent that winds up dropping a spy on you, but that is about the only scenario where I see a medic being useful. I've played with and w/o her and never found her to be key to me winning matches with the Monster deck. ...and as I said in the beginning, 0:15 ;) Thanks for watching!

First I wanted to say that these videos are really great! I viewed this one and your Scoia'tael one to get an idea how to build decks with the real cards from the Hearts of Stone expac bundle (since I haven't gotten the full collections in Witcher 3 itself yet) and they were both really helpful starting points. The biggest question I had was regarding the vampire muster. When they printed the cards physically they nerfed Vampire: Katakan (the 5-strength one in the video) and he is now 4-strength like the rest. Does that change how you would build the basic deck in this video? It still seems like a really good muster overall but it doesn't provide the Scorch protection that it did before. Just wondering your opinion on that.

+Scott Bowen I would try throwing a close combat 5+ in the deck or rather multiple ones if you can to be able to protect them from the Close Combat specific scorch.  Any higher point value card like the Arachas siege card, will protect them from the standard Scorch.  That is the adjustment I'd make if point value has changed.  And I'd make sure to play it 5+ point value card first, obviously, on the CC line.

Don't see the point of craploads of muster cards if you have no spies. Loads of opportunity to get 2+ of the same muster card in your hand which is basically a wasted card but no way to use the upside of emptying the deck and only drawing cards you want.

Can anyone confirme if you can play Eredin, Bringer of Death if you do not have enough cards in your hand to discard 2? If you can, it would work extremely well in an over-extending Monster deck.

Call me bias, but I've never felt drawn to playing either the Monster nor the Scoia'tael gwent decks. They've always felt inferior compared to Nilfgaard and the Northern Realms deck. I've also never fond of the new Skellige gwent deck in Blood and Wine. Northern Realms will ALWAYS be my #1 gwent deck. Nilfgaard being my 2nd choice. Spies for days.

I'm with you on that. I really liked the Skellige deck, however, the big caveat to playing it was that it was a VERY draw RNG dependent deck. If you got the right hands you could destroy anything, but if you got garbage you would have less of a chance of pulling it out of the fire to speak like you could with the NR deck. I can't find any monster cards at all, it makes me really annoyed because I want to play as them so badly but when I win cards off of NPCs all I get are the Scoia'tael faction cards, any tips on getting or finding the monster cards?

+AWiseMelon If by NPC's you're referring to the Merchants and other random vendors that will play you in games of Gwent, then you should know that there are a finite number of cards that they can reward you. There is a "random reward" pool of cards that the rewards for beating them are pulled from....and what reward you get is... random. You'll just keep getting cards from them until you have them all. I havent touched Gwent yet. Would you recommend going around to all the merchants and buying all the cards I can before I even play and then go play people?

+cougarooniejnr I guess that would depend on where you are in the game and what your interest in Gwent is. If you can tell me how far you are into the main story/plot of the game as well as whether you're interest in Gwent is just to add another fun aspect to your game or whether you're after the Gwent related trophy/achievement, then I would be be able to give you a proper answer.

I'm finished the Baron questline to my knowledge and I've started to buy cards. The decoy trick with the Armorer at Crow's perch doesn't work anymore? Have they patched that? It's hard to get wrong, he just didnt have a card the third time round. I'd like the achievment although with the Baron now gone I feel that's probably impossible

+cougarooniejnr Well technically speaking it will only work if you haven't already picked up enough Decoy cards to total 3. You're only supposed to have 3 of them, and once you get them, the game is supposed to keep you from getting more. I keep saying "supposed" because there were bugs reported that allowed people to get some ridiculous numbers of "special" cards like the decoy and I don't know if they have been fixed or not. My guess is, that if you pop open your deck and look, you already have 3 and that's the reason it wasn't there the third time. So to your original question... It couldn't hurt to pop around and buy cards. IMO, once you have all of the tight bond cards and at least 2 spy cards, 3 decoys and 2 commander's horns, in the Northern Realms deck + the clear weather version of the Foltest leader card, you're in a fairly decent position to start playing. Although you could go out to Skellige and buy the spy card that is out there, it might be difficult at your level as that is a much higher level zone and it think it costs like 1 or 2K gold to get out there. I tried popping out there just for shits and giggles VERY early on to pick it up on my last playthrough and it was a mistake given how far everything out leveled me. Just a caveat I thought I'd throw in.

Video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix my self a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm really a shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I can introduce my self. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she has a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I want the best for her and I harbor no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seems happy with her boyfriend, so I did not bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it, I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already when I first saw her. Besides, I am quiet happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wants to live some other life without me in it, so I said, okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness. My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally can't take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get my self a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video. She said, you know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

You can, but you chance missing some of the cards, or at least making them a pain in the ass to get. One of those things that has led to many a 2nd playthrough just to get the trophy because people ignored it the first time through and then couldn't get certain cards after they finished the game.
