Okay, question for those versed in witcher lore. They say that nobody would be interested in slaying dragons were it not for their gold, but the real question, is how did the dragons aquire their gold. Did they burn a city to the grown and steal the gold from the treasury? Or did they find an already abandoned kingdom that just hadn't been looted, or perhaps they find lost temples that have gold? Either way, man made treasure puts up the question of how did they aquire it all. Since not all dragons can shape-shift, yet they all have a hoard of treasure. I've looked online, but found no answer. So if someone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it. Since if the dragons stole the loot from kingdoms, then to an extent it would make sense for people to want to take the dragons gold. It wasn't theirs to begin with.

I am sorry but the story is not based on Saint George. Its a retelling of the Polish legend of the Wawel Dragon who also had a taste for mutton and who was slain by the tailor Dratewka or a cobbler named Skuba (depends on the picture book) who stuffed a sheep's corpse full of sulphur. When the dragon ate it he became so thirsty that he drank from the Vistula/Wisła river until he exploded. The character Sheepbagger from the story The Bounds of Reason (Granice Możliwości) is based on the dragon slayer from the legend. There is a Saint George in the video games - George of Kagen from the Griffin School.

To be correct, my mom, dad, grandma and grandpa told it to me, but my grandma had been a grammar teacher in Poland, so she went over the grammar in the book with me.

With just how based on Slavic folklore The Witcher franchise is, one would expect ALL of the sapient dragons to have a human, or at least a humanoid, form, as oppose to only one species of them, since within the Slavic folklores, all dragons, with the exceptions of the animalistic and serpentine dragons such as knuckers, are said to be able to have the ability to transform into human beings, or sometimes elves, and are of an intelligence level that meets if not downright surpasses those of humans. The dragons of Western Europe, except for Scandenavia, have dragons that, in addition to only having their base forms exclusively, are also, with only a few exceptions, less intelligent than humans, though certainly more clever than any beast. As the actual dragons of The Witcher are intelligent as a rule, they would be based on either Slavic, Nordic, or Hellenic/Greek dragons, and although only the first of these three categories can generally polymorph, the fact that the bestiary of The Witcher is more based on the Medieval beastiaries of the Slavic kingdoms than anything else, means that it would have been more logical for all of the sapient species of dragons to have some degree of an effective and naturally occurring polymorphing ability.

Im pretty sure griffins are related to these guys too. Cockatrice and Griffins have almost the exact same body shape, just in the mane and tail puff that they differ.
