As a Pole, I can help out with the SZ CZ confusion. SZ = sh. CZ = ch. SZCZ = shch. Soieszczka makes absolutely no sense in western Slavic names, we don't even use the conjugation of "oie" in any Polish words/surnames. But maybe you mistranslated it, and it sounds very similar to "wieszczka" ("w" instead of "so"), which would mean "prophetess" So maybe it's Hanna Wieszczka Trebinska -> Hanna Prophetess Trebinska
@niofo771311 ай бұрын
i thought about wieszczka as well! i wonder is it's just mistranscription, bcos that would fit very well. but yeah, the "szczka" part sounds actually legit, it's the "soie" that doesn't sound particularly polish. or maybe it's sobieszczka, that could be a family name too. it would be hanna sobieszczka-trebińska then. (i love ppl being confused by our usage of z, it's like a superpower)

Incubus might be a play on words in this case. In latin "incubus" can also be a malign spirit who "sits on you" while you sleep, giving you nightmares. "Nightmare" comes from "night" + "mære", the latter being an old english word for "incubus". I don't know where this started exactly, maybe with the painting "The Nightmare" by Henry Fuseli (1781) or the folklore that inspired it, but the fact that mære sounds like mare-a female horse-led people to associate hellish horses with nightmares, despite mære itself not having anything to do with horses.

In Polish version of the game Roach (Płotka) is voiced by a celebrity known for his deep voice. He is a radio DJ and an actor and comedian Wojciech Mann. It's kind of a joke that repeats itself - he was voicing some animated characters in movies (for example Shrek 2) and it was allways a female character (Płotka in Polish is also feminine).

The Incubus part made me think of the succubus equivalent that we have in Nordic folklore: In Nordic folklore the are called Mara. I am pretty sure it's from that the English word Nightmare comes from. In Swedish it's Mardröm(dream from a Mara). And now you might conclude why the Psilocybe is called Mardroeme on Skellige. The Mara can enter the room through the smallest of holes so no room is safe. But because of the mara suffers from obsessive thoughts you can fill a psalmbook with cowhairs and put it in the window or litter the floor with flax seed, then she has to count the hair/seeds and wont be able to do you any harm. Sometimes she attacks animals, especially horses. That you can notice if the horse is exhausted and foaming in the morning. you might notice fleted mar-braids in the horses mane as well. Luckily you can scare the Mara away from the animals with a dead bird of prey or a carv in a hexagram(markors(Mar-cross)) on the outside of the animals boxes. None knows for sure where the Maras comes from, some think they are unrestful spirits of unmarried women who have died and looking for closeness and warmth from living beings. Others think they are actual women who are cursed. The curse is then said to come from mothers who have tried to lessen their birthing pains using black magic and climbing through the amniotic membrane of a foal. This way the offspring gets cursed, if it's a girl she will become a Mara and if a boy he will become a Werewolf. The curse of the Mara can be broken if someone tells her that she is a Mara right after she has transferred back into a normal human again in the morning. But one needs to be careful, if the transformation is not fully complete the woman can end up lacking a toe or a finger.

What I think is that "Hanna Trebińska" is translated good. The part "so ieszczka" doesn't make any sense in Polish, but if instead of "so" there was a letter "w" then it would all make sense. "Wieszczka" is an old Polish word that means "seeress, soothsayer or prophetess" basically someone that tells prophecies. So all of this would be "Hanna Trebińska Seeress"

The "elaborate plate" on her necklace appears to be a wax tablet. I'm actually impressed that the devs modelled it and didn't just stick a piece of paper on her. Wax tablets are one of the earliest known reusable note pads in history, dating back to 1400 BC. You would scratch notes into the wax and later scrape the wax out, melt it and pour it back into the tablet. Let it dry and you have a new notebook. Interesting little detail.

Not sure about the middle one, but "ieszczka" does look a bit like incomplete "wieszczka" - seer/prophetess. BTW in Polish "sz" is pronounced like "sh" in "shadow" (Ш), "cz" like "ch" in "change" (Ч).
