I saw an amateur production of Pirates of Penzance when I was in college (1993). When they got to the "Here's your centerbit" line they just held up a big question mark. They didn't know what it was, and this was before Google or Wikipedia.

The company I was loosely associated with got to play here a few times as part of the festival. I now see what they said about the stage being tiny. I still have this song deeply imbedded within myself twenty five years after helping with props for a production of this. Pain in the buttocks to find a good dark lantern.

She’s Ruth, Frederick’s nursemaid. She meant to apprentice him to a ship’s pilot, but instead apprenticed him to the Pirate King.

@@copferthat You must not be familiar with the Pirates of Penzance if you didn’t know that’s Ruth. Even in the ‘80s movie where she didn’t sing at this part, she was still out there.
