Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. Last week, we covered the epic conclusion to the Battle of Attu, as Colonel Yamasaki’s doomed garrison made a last banzai charge towards salvation that ended in mass death. But most importantly, the end of the battle would have huge repercussions for the North Pacific Campaign, as the Japanese now had no other choice but to abandon their presence in the Aleutian Islands. At long last, the population of the US could feel safe again. Further south, however, we also have in store some new developments that were unfolding in China and the Solomons; so join us as we delve into another exciting episode of the Pacific War.

I would love to become a member but alas & forsooth I am a 65 yr old Aussie pensioner and my poor long suffering Bride keeps us to a strict budget. I was a lifer in the RAN and served on the Oberon Class Boats back in the 70's early 80's.....I have always been a WWII fool [and History in General]....and speaking of which, may I pass on a little family history concerning the Fall of Singapore.... It's about my Uncle George and how He was killed [on Anzac Day 1945 [25th April 1945] in an Allied Bombing raid on the Japanese Airfield at Sandakan Nth Borneo. He was a Pvt in the 2/26th Battalion who arrived in Singapore in late July 1941. His Battalion was quickly transferred up to Malaya where they stood as a blocking force to any Japanese attack...now you know how that turned out, and, eventually, the 2/26th was surrendered not far from the Causeway. And so He and the rest of the Garrison entered Japanese captivity at Changi. In July 1942, after the Japanese worked out who was going where,, they instigated a number of work parties known as Force A, B & C...A went to the Burma Railway, B went to Nth Borneo and C went to either Formosa or Japan. He then endured 31 months of Japanese captivity allegedly being killed in an Allied air raid on this Japanese Airfield [they themselves had carved out of the Borneo jungle]. If you visit the Army records [AWM7425] at the Canberra War Memorial, it lists His death as Malaria....Given that only 6 POW's out of the 1500 odd the Japanese had conveyed to Sandakan in mid 1942 survived, I wonder if His death really was caused by an Allied Airstrike on Anzac Day 1945, and the Oz Gubment fudged it for the sake of not embarrassing the other Allies?. He and approx 1500 massed POW's - were transported, [he] aboard the Ubi Maru [there being a total of 30 from the 2/26th] to begin living in hell. At least He missed the Sandakan death march, which took place Jul/Aug 45. Pvt George Edward Hutchison QX17981 born in TOOWOOMBA 1918 he was from 2/26Th Battalion 27th Brigade 8Th Division 2nd AIF KIA 25/4/1945. I would suggest the Military History Not Visualised videos on china in WW2. I found it very interesting, especially the note that one reason china is so under read has been the lack of sources as the PLA is still closed and the KMT was only opened relatively recently. Its like I had never released how 1990s/20s much access to soviet archives changed the understating of the eastern front.

Kudos to Kings and Generals for such detailed coverage of the decisive Battle of Shipai. Hu Lien was one of the most brilliant and admired Republic of China Army generals. His successful defense of the Shipai Fortress has been described as "the Stalingrad of the East" - and justifiably so. After the battle Hu was awarded the Order of Blue Sky and White Sun with Grand Cordon, and he soon took command of the 18th Army. In July 1947, during the early part of the Chinese Civil War, Hu won the Nanma Campaign in Shandong against the equally brilliant Su Yu, inflicting such heavy casualties on the Communists' East China Field Army that Mao Zedong was compelled to advise his field commanders against further engagement with Hu, who was, in Mao's words, "cunning as a fox and fierce as a tiger." Coincidentally, in Chinese the pronunciation of "Hu" is identical to that of "fox" and nearly identical (except for intonation) to that of "tiger." Talk about someone who truly lived up to his name!

There is a belief that the Chinese were not good soldiers, but it wasn't the soldier who was lacking. There was so much graft by the generals that the soldiers didn't have the equipment needed to fight against the Japanese. When the Chinese soldier was led by a competent leader, he was a tough and effective force. Your videos are some of the very few documentaries show how effective the Chinese could be with the right leadership. You have given a real depth to the Chinese front.

Well said. In fact there were two kinds of Chinese soldier in Chiang Kai-shek's army between 1928, the end of Chiang's Northern Expedition, and 1949 - those in units commanded by Whampoa Military Academy graduates who were loyal to and trusted by Chiang (the so-called "direct descendants"), and those in units commanded by officers who had served under various regional warlords before getting integrated into Chiang's army (the so-called "mishmash"). As a general rule, the "direct descendants" were better equipped, better trained, better fed, better paid and, with few exceptions, more combat-capable than the "mishmash." They were the de facto elite units within Chiang's army. Hu Lien's 11th Division had been commanded by Chen Cheng himself at one point and was considered the elite within the elite.

Regarding Japanese casualties during the 2nd Sino-Japanese War. There’s no question that the Chinese side tends to over-inflate enemy casualties for obvious reasons. But at the same time despite the meticulous nature of Japanese record-keeping, their own numbers may not be entirely trustworthy either. Case in point in 1932 during the the Shanghai Incident in which the Japanese Navy and Army did battle against the Chinese garrison forces for a month. The Japanese consul publicly released a casualty total of 385 dead and over 2000 wounded, despite the heavy fighting and the repeated calls for more Japanese reinforcements during the conflict. After the battle and ceasefire declared, a British military observer at the time witnessed a military funeral specifically for the Japanese 9th division and 24th Mixed Brigade. He counted spirit tablets for 547 dead alone for just these two units. This was way before the outbreak of the Pacific War so the British officer have no reason to be biased for or against the Japanese military. There seems to be a inherent under-reporting of Japanese casualties in China for the fear of spoiling the notion of easy conquest against a weak, fragmented China. IMO it might be beneficial to look at the numbers of Japanese that fell “due to disease”. The Wuhan battle in particular have a staggering number of Japanese dead and ill from sickness. Sure the infectious disease can be a huge factor in the Wuhan/Yangtze River area but this was also a meat-grinder of a campaign for the Japanese. It might be less of a morale blow for the Japanese military to claim their dead died of natural causes than to admit they died fighting the lowly Chinese opponent especially in engagements where they met stronger than expected resistance

One thing that cannot be said about the Japanese military, and that is they lacked courage and fortitude. They fought hard and refused to surrender. These great battles are seldom talked about. Thank you Kings and Generals for this awesome series!

The current Russo Ukrainian War is similar to Second Sino Japanese War : 1. Both Russia and Japan annex some territories 2. Both China and Ukraine are modernising their military to make ready for Total War after losing some territories 3. Both Russia and Japan instigate the war with some excuses 4. Both Russia and Japan claimed they can end the war as quick as possible (1 hour 22 mins Or 3 months) 5. Both China and Ukraine resist the invaders in the end the invaders got stuck in a stalemate 6. US providing lend lease equipment to the defenders 7. US initiated economic sanctions against the invaders 8. Song Mei Ling and Zelensky made a speech at the US Congress

Mao Zedong should now be in the guerrilla zone of Shanxi, Chahar and Hebei, and be neighbor of Shanxi's Model Governor Yan Xishan. and the PLA was not formed until after 1946

Hopefully, this definitively lay to rest the lie that "The Chinese Nationalists did not fight Japan". (Looking at you Tuchman and Stilwell)

Stilwell while right about the corruption was a bit harsh on Chiang. Sure he wanted to reorganized and retrain Chiang's troop, but in he doesn't necessarily have the use of such troops for the Chinese cause as seen by Chiang and his generals. A lot of the time Stilwell's goal was aligned to the US and British purpose and not so much for the Chinese.

@@muic4880 Stilwell activly undermined the Nationalist Chinese war effort, but cutting off lend lease to chineses units not under his control. Stilwell also planned to have Chiang assasinated (the plans were never carried out tho). Stilwell did more to harm the allied war effort than any other US general.

Stilwell was absolutely right that the NRA command was corrupt as fuck. He tried to "remake" the NRA, but completely forgot his place as only being in "command" in Burma, and not the NRA as a whole.

Excellent video 📹 Please admire the Japan 🇯🇵 military leadership. In this video 📹 , they fight with China and USA 🇺🇸, who have vast resources. The Japanese are able withdraw their men and resources and reallocate them. (Doesn't slways work) Look forward to next week.
