The scene where the main character is surrounded by two people spewing out black liquid and her running away from them is symbolic of social anxiety: she gets anxious of conversing with others, fearing others' judgement. The armor that grows on her and weighs her down represents the burden of isolating herself as an attempt to protect herself and hide herself from the fear of confronting her anxiety and others. At first, she wears the armor and tries to plow straight through the black goo, a manifestation of her fears and obstacles without actually confronting them herself. This tires her out, and she learns to figuratively and literally come out of her shell and come to accept the anxiety within her with the positive mindset of moving forward. The final scene, where she enters the building, symbolizes her finally bringing herself to go to some sort of social gathering, after overcoming her social anxiety. This is such a beautiful animation.

I struggled with depression for several years, and this video perfectly captures the feelings of fighting an ongoing and ever-increasingly difficult battle of coping with the darkness. This movie is a beautiful and hopeful sentiment to everyone struggling out there to know that giving up shouldn't be an answer, and that no matter how hard it gets there is a beauty behind the darkness. I especially love how the monster seems to die out after the heroine accepts it and slowly walks through it. This is also how I defeated my darkness; by accepting it and learning to ignore it. Very well done and beautifully animated.

This animation *isn't about depression,* it's specifically about social anxiety and not letting what other people say control you. The monster isn't her depression, it's the hurtful words of other people. Edit for context: when I posted this five years ago a lot of the comments were EXTREMELY negative, calling this animation a gross misrepresentation of depression. Some going so far as to say the animation was potentially harmful and that the artists should be ashamed/held accountable. Scrolling for a bit it looks like all the comments this was directed at are gone, buried or deleted now, so people are taking offense to my comment as me being pretentious or policing people’s artistic interpretations. That wasn’t my intention, I was just trying to defend the artists at the time.

Love the concept visually, and the designs of the main character as well as the goo monster is striking. My only issue is that the sound design lacks impact. I didn’t really feel it when those huge impacts were happening. Besides that, though, all around incredible work!

I could be wrong, but I got the impression that the muted sound design was intentionally done to have a numbing effect. I gathered that the short was a metaphor for depression and anxiety. If so, then I'd say that it fits.
@ShayTsfoni6 жыл бұрын
AJG I totally agree. The concept, design, characters, style and movement are beautiful, and the only thing missing (beside the sound that you've already mentioned), is the frame rate. It's a super painful thing to do, but if there was one more frame between each two existing frames, and the movment would be smooth (combined with your comment about the sound), it would be on a whole other level. I liked it a lot. Very well done, made and thought out!
@Skovns6 жыл бұрын
Hey! One of the Sound Designers here! Thx for criticism! This was out first animated film, so we still have a lot to learn! But - not feeling those impact could be because of the stereo mix! We worked in 5.1 and used the sub a lot for the impacts + we could have worked more on the stereo mix as well (it sounds way cooler in 5.1). But I'm glad that you payed attention to the sound - and I hope you don't find it all bad! :)
@aw32996 жыл бұрын
William Skov Very much so liked many parts of this short, Animation, Sound, Writing, etc. A possible solution to avoid this minor hiccup with future projects, could be to post in the description (or comments when the video is first uploaded) what equipment the film was created in: 5.1 stereo, color calibration on the monitors used by the animators and artists, etc, as a recommendation for the ideal viewing experience of this short. Really just to give people that pay close attention to sound and visuals a guide to further improving the sound and look of this movie. Just a suggestion.

The things people say sometimes are horrible and ugly sometimes and no matter what you do or say " fighting it" it won't stop it and the best way to get rid of it is ignore it and walk through it like it's nothing. Don't give the bully or the bad talk any chance to hurt you and don't fight with it ignore it and let them see how small they are to you and how you don't give a shit of their words or opinion because they are nothing but sorryasses who don't have shit to hurt you ... the black goo actually seemed like this girl was having paranoia about people talking bad about her when in reality, all she needed to do was walk past her paranoia and just continue without the paranoia/delusions of people talking bad about her. could have just been social anxiety instead of being bullied.
@DeGroteLaaf6 жыл бұрын
after a second thought, walking away and ignoring won't always help against a bully or people bad mouthing you, so I think social anxiety fits this animation better. Gossip can get really nasty, regardless of the target fighting or ignoring it and people that hate you can hate you more if you ignore them - it only fuelling their flame to make your life more miserable. As an example; Ignoring racism doesn't make it go away either.

I think this can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the person and their personal experiences. I interpreted it in three ways: the battle with social anxiety, depression, or sexual assault and the armor represents the wall you build in order to protect yourself from past experiences and you stop trusting others,, but it ends up destroying you and making you utterly alone in the long run. I thought it was solely about being raped at first because of the two men circling her, but then when she went through the dark mass it sounded like a crowd of people so I thought it might be social anxiety yet it could be post traumatic stress or something, and then I realized that could also be interpreted as depression. Either way, I relate to all three, this was truly an amazing video and maybe one of the first meaningful animations I was actually truly able to understand and relate to, it made me tear up a bit.

In this world there are those who want to tear us down just for existing. They try to make us feel worthless, undeserving, less than. They pull us down until we no longer feel comfortable in our own skin, so we conceal ourself in an attempt to guard against those who try and convince us that we are unloved. We may have fought back against these voices. We tore and we pounded and we raged against those that meant us harm. We battled for what must have been an eternity, but inevitably our strength ran out and we collapsed yet despite all our valiant efforts, they remained. We may have reflected on our actions and saw how we let these voices change us and wondered why we let them control us like this. These faceless, amorphous entities who only live to see us suffer. We can instead choose to be ourselves in spite of them. We can choose to love ourselves and accept who we are regardless of what we've been told. We may pay dearly for this choice though. The same forces will surround us and multiply until the weight is unbearable and we feel like we are suffocating, but if we can make it through then they will be powerless against us forevermore. Our prize is the freedom and possibility that lies beyond. Beautiful work guys. You really managed to tell a story that allows people to connect to a lot of diverse experiences without become too abstract to keep it's emotional impact as a film. I'm relating this to just being a kid on the internet trying to express themselves. I thought the goo animations were particularly well done. I could really feel the viscosity of it. The way it would coalesce into globules reminded me of the pollution villain in Fern Gully which was some of the best looking animation in that entire film.

My interpretation is the monster representing social anxiety. Her armour is temporary coping mechanisms: excuses to leave conversations or checking your phone. She uses the armour to deflect and slashes through the anxiety and moves onwards. The anxiety gets worse so her armour must grow stronger. At 2:49, I feel as if the sludge that consumes her symbolises a panic attack. I thought it might have been just being overwhelmed by socialising but the way she can’t breathe properly once it envelopes her changed my mind. Not to mention the way she reacts out of fear (“oh no, not again”) when she notices it taking over her body is incredibly similar to when I notice my hands shaking- something I've noticed that happens when I’m about to have an attack. I absolutely loved this. Been bingeing animations for days but this one really spoke to me. Really beautiful

Very, VERY good inspiration that I think could have many interpretations! Personally, I feel like it told a story of her recovering from sexual assault. The flashback with the attention from the men that originally, she revelled in. Then the black goo pouring from their mouths, symbolising it no longer being flattering, but bad, scary. They circled her. Then she ran, and as she ran, found herself being swallowed by that darkness. I think in the end, it told the story of how, when she put up too many walls and didn't confront the issue, she couldn't recover from it - but after wading through it, finally confronting the effects of what had happened, she was able to open that door and step back into society. Still wary, but more confident, and less scared.

Yes,...for a warrior,...it seems there's always something weighing you down. It gets harder the more that's added when you fight through your own darkness and demons. Demons entertain like angels only to delight and suspend you in one place to steal time away from you and blind you to the truth. Thus happens in everyone's lives but in different ways. This animation is DIRECTLY what my life is. You won''t know they are demons until you wake up or they reveal themselves. Nice animation. I think its about whatever you feel its about, how it relates most to you. To me I see social anxiety, but thats a personal problem of my own. Someone else said "bullshit" from others, and that isnt too far either I guess. Depression also works, I dont think its intended for people to tear appart the notion of others to validate their own ideas about it, art is subjective and meant to be open to personal interpretation. The more broad it is the better recieved it can be. The more discussion there is surrounding it too. In my eyes, the girl is fine in a social environment to start until sludge leaks from the mouths of her peers. It causes panic and forces her to flee which has her companions looking taken aback by her behavior although to her they begin to appear malevolent. She removes herself from the situation only to find it doesnt help, shes drowning in negativity and slowly being suffocated by it both metaphorically and literally. When she finally escapes her sense of suffocation she finds herself developing an armour, a thick hide. With every new encounter with anxiety she becomes more guarded against it. She tackles it immediately and the first time since developing her armour she seems shocked to see it vanish the second she strikes it, almost confused by the supposedly easy victory. But moments later its there again, just as big and strong as before. Her defences are up, shes ready to tackle it, but her armor burdens her. She is alone fighting by herself. With each consecutive battle the sludge takes its toll on her defences forcing them to bolden and thicken. She even uses the spikes from her armor as weapons because thats her only means of handling the problem; her means of self protection. But eventually that armor is too heavy for her own good. She cant move in it. Shes safe from the sludge but this time the sludge wont leave. She realizes it cant hurt her but with her weighty defences and its unrelenting nature she sees it cannot be defeated. But then she sees the building. A building signifying society and socializing. Even at the end when she opens the door you can hear the same sounds of socializing you heard in the scenes where she was amongst her peers, faceless and almost indifferent seeming like shes very distant although nearby. She disassociates herself from them because she doesnt feel comfortable completely in their company, but by the end of it all she realizes that her armor, her defence against anxiety, just weighs her down. The idea of socializing itself has become the issue, not just socializing in general. The sludge gazes down at her with a head fashioned similar to the people around her we saw before in the beginning, watching and waiting. She learns that as is, without her crutch, she needs to endure as the vulnerable human being she is, otherwise she cant get anywhere. She cant move forward. She'll be stuck exactly where she is and this time the anxiety wont subside. Its waiting for her and this time she knows it. So she sheds her armour, her security, her crutch, whatever it may be, and simply endures. And once she makes it to the other side unscathed realizing she was in no danger to begin with she turns to one thing that can help her; her peers. And she returns to socializing as she did before. Thats what I see. I see social anxiety.

I like how the monster took her as a child, but she emerged victorious as a woman

Fear is within ourselves. Don't fall and immerse in your fear, feel it as it is and challenge it, it will gradually disappear and become our strength.

I know it's subjective but from my perspective, goo monster presented "sticky thing" which in this video the goo comes out from other people mouth so i think it somekind of society trouble that stick around us and build up anxiety(?), The armor is like the natural behaviour of us people who like to defend ourselves against what people like to think of us being something else and we aren't accept the reality(?) And when the time goes by the goo just getting bigger and bigger, and we as human keep defending ourselves alone and building a heavy burden and then again it makes us hard to move, and by removing the stone armor, going throughout the goo by accepting their existence, well i am not saying it's easy as she struggle to get out from the goo at the first time to build up her armor and maybe the goo will leaves you a scar to being remember, we can pass our trouble and step into the new gate of trouble which we still don't know what is up ahead.

very symbolic to when people build up an "armor" as a way to protect themselves of other people.

I love the message of this animation, as well as the quality, but on another note, this is eerily similar to the game Sundered. Artstyle and elements both remind me of that game.

The animation is incredible, but the sound design could use some work. Overall though, very nicely done. The visual design looks incredibly elegant and very professional.

That scene at 0:35 just triggered some serious "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes" flashbacks: Anyone else feels reminded of the Ing emerging from the ground?
