When he sings," Live without the sunlight," he shakes his head no,"Love without your heartbeat....I...I can't live within you." and then he looks hurt, disappointed, and sad. Those were rhetorical questions he was singing to himself. He shakes his head no, bc he realized he couldn't do that to her. He gave her up. She was precious to him and he had the power to move the stars, but he lets her go willingly. He loved her, and he proved he wasn't such a bad guy after all, when he put her first. After all, he was just doing what she asked of him in the first place. How could you grow up not having a crush on him after seeing this movie.

According to Labyrinth: The Ultimate Visual History, this was Bowie's favorite song in the entire movie and he genuinely did feel awful for Jareth. It seems he was a Jareth/Sarah shipper right from the start.
@brittanywalker47923 жыл бұрын
That was where Bowie's vision for the character was different than Hanson's. Bowie thought that Jareth loved Sarah, and since he had complete creative control over the music, all the songs point to Jareth loving her. Henson always just viewed Jareth as a villain trying to trick her. It created a duality to Jareth's character, and I think that is what has made him so popular (well... David Bowie playing him didn't hurt either...).

Candace Huggins But remember, later he tells her "just let me rule you" and "do what I say." ok I did read most of the comments in here and must say something about it. Ok first I am a big Jareth/Sarah Shiper and would have loved if they would have been together in the end but please stay with the facts and look closley in the Movie. Sure Jareth is not human so he will always be way older then Sarah but at the end from the Movie you all need to remember that Sarah was still very young, to young for Jareth at the time. Then many wrote that Sarah was stupid to not be with him. No 15 Year old wants to hear the words "fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave" from anyone and be happy about it ( Not to mention that no Teen choses their man for live at this age. I would have been scared to death if someone asked me to stay forever with them at this age ). Then some wrote that Jareth would have given back the Baby right away if he really loved her but what most don't see is that Jareth did not love Sarah in the beginning. He wanted to mock her like he did with all the others that tryed to solve his Labyrinth and failed in the end. If you watch the Movie closley you see what I mean. He even talks colder and with more cruelness in his Voice in the start of the Movie and is more cruel to Sarah ( like with the time he shortens for Sarah to solve the Labyrinth ) but the more he watches Sarah the more he gets interested in her and I think the final turning point was the ball, where they danced together. So no he would not have given the Baby back from the start. Then in the end of the Movie where he sings this Song he finally sees that he wants Sarah to stay ( not something he had seen coming in the beginning ) but I almost believe that he had known from the start that she would not chose him in the end and thats why his Voice is so broken in some parts in the song. ( He pleaded with her to hear him and give him a Chance ) I really think it would have been perfect if they would have done a second Movie where Jareth comes back when Sarah is older. I am even sure she would see him finally after growing up a little more. ( sorry for any tipping Errors. I am from Germany and my English is a little rusty ) :)

I do almost also debate if he hoped she would have gotten lost to the point she couldn't leave or wouldn't leave because Toby would have been a goblin (or so he said). Thus he can trap her that way- plus he can always blame her and wash his hands of personal fault by saying she wanted Toby gone. He's a real trickster- which I like because that's just like a classic fairy tale type of villain. They have very bizarre rules and like to get you to cause your own troubles.

I love how well it comes across so well how really upset Jareth is here, and how actually vulnerable and child-like he is. David did a really good job. You can't help but feel sorry for him when you watch him throw this little tantrum. He works through the grief of losing her all right here in this song. First he's angry, then he's so heart broken, and you can just tell how he's almost come to terms with it at the very end. He doesn't like it, but he knows he's never going to have her. Poor Jareth.

not gonna talk about Bowies death or i'm just gonna cry because it's too sad. so far i haven't cried yet, but for some reason this scene damn near made me cry. anyway, i think Jareth wouldn't have actually turned the baby into anything (don't care if it's just a movie) i think his only intention was her to begin with. used the baby to lure her in, because he loved her... he would have returned the baby either way. he just wanted a mate. lol. if he had really wanted a goblin he wouldn't have given her any option at all. point is he wasn't so bad ;)

Try saying this with a straight face, even if it's just to a mirror: "I have watched the movie Labyrinth more than once because of the plot, special effect puppetry." :D Don't worry, neither can I.

Damn it sarah! Man, first Christine from phantom of the opera and now sarah!? Wtf, i cant handle this. Sarah should have stayed with Jareth just like Christine should have stayed with the phantom! Jareth and the phantom might have some twisted views on what love is but damn! Love is love!!

I have a deep respect for this comment!

+Manuel Segura nah it would not have worked out. Both Jareth and the phantom had superficial love for these characters- they were more in love with what they represented than the actual girls. They are both these outsiders who are extremely lonely for someone to relate to. It's a dark sort of love. Though I do think that Chrisitine ended up going with who she did (that other guy) because he was a safe choice and ultimately Christine is a very average normal sort of girl of her time (in my opinion).

Christine was way too good for both Raoul and Erik, and Sarah was too good (and young) for Jareth (still a christine and erik shipper though. I'm trash.)

Yeah. It was in the script, but after they got a 14 year actor for Sarah they changed it. (And rightly so.) They were very respectful of her age.

I always think about this scene and the ball scene, it just reminds me how much I missed as a kid since I didn't know too much. The more I grew the more I understood where Jerith was coming from, it breaks my heart but at the same time, it brings memories I could cherish, tell stories, and learn from them. The memories of this movie had been in half of my life. This movie was made years ago, with a legend, and amazing music, it's a true masterpiece, I hope no one in their right mind changes this movie...

As a kid, this scene made me sad because I knew the movie was over and King Jareth went away, Sara told him off, etc. Now I am sad because David Bowie is gone. He was one of my first star crushes as a kid, beside Gene Wilder....I won't glamorize myself and say I was his biggest fan but I will say that I liked him enough for his death to put a big knot in my throat and make me feel a true loss, sadness and other emotions.

I remember being so confused by this scene/song but now I think I get it. It's because he exists in her imagination right? He can't live within her mind anymore because he's tired/bored of it and she's also growing up and becoming an adult.
@Agatalana10 жыл бұрын
mmm... I think the drama is that she is a sunlight, she can't love him and give him that light 'cause she does not need what he can give her, she can't stay with him in his dark kingdom and there's no place for his dark beauty inside her light mind, inside her soul. What a pity! As for me, I would give him all my energy (light or dark) and all my love to feel his amazing energy!
@Cara-Moore10 жыл бұрын
I believe it's about unrequited love "[I can] Live WITHOUT your sunlight, love WITHOUT your heartbeat. [but] I.. can't.. live.. WITHIN.. you...
