With 27k kms on it, I've just purchased the V40 T4 CC 2016 with the B4204T19 engine. Diagnostics had the thermostat code, needed replacing. Other than that, the low friction oil rings have been know to stick in some of the units on the B420T419. I attribute mostly to long oil change intervals instigated by Volvo and short city driving on cold engines. Taking this seriously somewhat. Not to cheap out on engine oil and changing it every 5k miles will go a long way in aiding the engine's longevity. Thanks for the tips, 50k new transmission fluid surely with injectors clean. Add to the list the right gas octane and it seems sorted. The car has a character that makes you love it. With some care and attention, feels like it'll go a long besides you. Cheers

I'm currently in the market to buy a 2012 v40 d2 with 200 000km on the clock. What type of problems should I be on the look out for around this mileage? I hear you say one can push these cars to 400 000km with good servicing, that's quite impressive.

It might be too late for you, but might not be for others. You can look forwards to catastrophic engine failure and its reassembling or replacement.

@@cupra2Jock. Used market is always dishonest and people usually do not look after their cars these days. I recently attempted to buy MY16 Volvo with D2 engine. It is refreshed model with reliability issues sorted out. However, I had found out that engine was leaking oil which is a catastrophic failure. It is possible to drive, but that is exactly why Volvo engines would catch fire on their own.

Before 2015 the diesel engines are from Peugeot, but after 2015 they produce their own types of diesel engines, all of them 2.0, starting from D2 with 120 HP, then you can get D3 with 150 HP or D4 with 190 HP. If you chose automatic gearbox, it is the popular Geartronic from Aisin - 6 gears for D2 and D3 and 8 gears for D4.

I owned a 2015 V40 D2 2.0 I owned it for 7 years. It never let me down. I'd highly recommend one. If you want an auto, look for a Geartronic. Not a Powershift.

Hope they will solve the problem with the shutdown of 2g/3g mobile system for the 2018-2019 models. It's mandatory to EU law with sos or e-call from 2018-models. And with shutdown of 2g/3g, this will not work and the V40 is no longer approved to run in traffic.
