F-16 is one of the most successful military aircraft of all times. Few could argue that its service in Israel wasn't an important factor in the whole story. But do you know exactly who and how scored a first air-to-air kill for the F-16? To answer that, we need to go back to 1981. Lebanon Civil War is in full swing and Israeli Air Force occasionally clashes with Syrian aircraft over this country. The commanding officer of The First Jet Squadron of Israeli Air Force took off with an inexperienced lieutenant on his wing. They will soon get a chance to make history.

F-16s don't get enough credit for their 80+ air to air combat kills. Its the F-15 that always steals the glory. But operation Peace for Galilee the F-16 out scored the F-15 with 44 kills vs 40 for the F-15. And the F-16 had disadvantage off having no long range Sparrows while the F-15 did. F-16 got all its kills using short range missiles and cannon.
@showtime112

I guess you could say that. One viewer commented in a previous video and compared it to Spitfire and Hurricane in the Battle of Britain. Hurricane was credited with more victories but Spitfire got most of the glory.

I know it's war, but I always kinda feel for the helicopter pilots that get shot down watching these re-enactments. (Tomcat kill, this one, etc). I think it's simply because they don't have the opportunity to eject. When they're going down they know it's the end. I know some pilots have hoped that their foes eject, it's a respect thing even though they may be enemies.
@showtime112
@showtime112 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, there's much less they can do. I remember reading about Russian helicopters that first introduced ejection seats. There was also a comment from some Western helicopter pilot who was suspicious and said he would always rather rely on crash landing instead. Perhaps it was just lack of thrust to something new.

Damn it! Just wondering 🤔 what else Showtime112 keeps in his Treasure Vault?👍 There we go with another outstanding historical contribution, especially the not well-known ones, are the ones which make it interesting. It was compelling 😉 to see an (IAF) 🇮🇱 F-16 shooting down a helicopter useing the Vulcan 20 mm Gatling-type gun with 511 rounds. We all have our favourite fighter jets, for me personally, the F-16 was never really on my favourite list, of fighter jets I know it's a very capable combat jet it just didn't appeal to me. My country had the Mirage III and IIIR in service from the 60ths to 90th's, during the decades they have been continuously updated. So I have to confess my favourite model was the Mirage IIIC of the 60ths and 70ths in the bare-metal finish, the same one as the IAF during the Six-Day war had. Just check out the link below to see what Brigadier general Giora "Hawkeye" Epstein has to say about the Mirage IIIC he is a retired brigadier General in the Israeli Air Force (IAF) and a fighter ace credited with 17 victories, 16 against Egyptian jets, making Epstein the ace of aces of supersonic fighter jets and of the Israeli Air Force. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXnWdneVaJVratE

Don't worry, there's plenty of stories left to cover 😁 Well, Mirage III is like a classic car from the 60s. No ABS, ESP or anything like that. The first time I saw a F16 in real life was 2013 aero India, I was a student abroad back then and growing tension between Iran and US had resulted in a major spike in sanctions, causing massive and sudden inflation at home, my prepared saving suddenly lost two third of its value and forced to pack up and leave before I could finish my studies, but just four days before my flight there was the airshow and I got myself a ticket cause I wouldn't miss such a thing even at the cost of my life, major companies had lost the competition for Indian Air force to Rafal and except IAF fighters only one USAF F16 had come. I got the wind that pilot will be around for couple of hours by his plane static display and I stock around until he showed up, I talked to him, he was nice and friendly and in the end I told him where I am from, he was surprised to some extent but I told him how I feel about going back to my jail of a country and I wish next time I see a F16 I see them bombing us in Tehran... 8 years and much suffering later, I'm still waiting for that roar in my sky...

It is by far the most resource consuming module I've tried. I can run it acceptably if I reduce textures to low, but I have another problem. Tomcat's replay track is always broken. Generally, replay track doesn't work well in DCS but on most modules, it works at least sometimes. With Tomcat (and also Mirage 2000) it never works so to me It not very useful. A good alternative is the Hornet. It is easier on your PC and it gives you a nice naval operations feel. Also, you run all the systems yourself instead of telling Jester what to do.

You should do a video about the SyAAF Aerospatiale Gazelle antitank helicopters. Equipped with long-ranged, accurate, and rather powerful HOT antitank missiles, they ended up mauling a good number of Israeli armored/mechanized columns during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The Gazelles are credited with destroying and damaging dozens of Israeli armored and soft-skinned vehicles, for surprisingly light losses. On a separate note, also during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, SyAAF Su-20s managed to launch a number of very effective strikes against Israeli army columns, including at least one (with cluster bombs and napalm) that according to Israeli sources had wreaked havoc upon the Israeli column that it was attacking. Unfortunately however, the Su-20s did experience pretty serious losses before the end of the war, as the SyAAF continued to send its Sukhois on daring attack missions against the massive Israeli force that was invading Lebanon.
@showtime112

@@showtime112 : Aviation author and historian Tom Cooper is working on a 2-part series about the Lebanese Civil War and the Israeli invasions of Lebanon in 1978 and 1982. The first volume is out already, but doesn’t cover the 1982 invasion. In the meantime, try Googling an article that he wrote sometime in the early 2000s called “The Syrian Tank Hunters in Lebanon”. It used to be on the Air Combat Information Group (ACIG) site. I’m sure that the Internet Archive will have a copy, if you can’t find live web hosted versions of the article. I hope that helps you!

@@jdsaldivar5606 Israeli version is that the helicopter was transporting Syrian commandos. It certainly wasn't a threat to the F-16s but the passengers might have been a threat to Israeli troops on the ground or their allies. There's another story which I intend to cover in the future. When the 1973 War started, Egyptians sent helicopters loaded with troops to capture one of the airbases in Sinai. Israeli pilot Amos Amir took off in his Phantom and shot down several of them and so he defended his base.

That helo should have realized it would have been wiser to get on the ground when the first sidewinder missed him. He also should have realized that Israeli pilots are highly trained, much better than what they are, a gun run may be difficult, but as seen it can be done with deadly effects.

OMG, not that ridiculous logic again....... A military helicopter carrying commandos is a legitimate target. If you didn't properly protect it, that's your fault. Every military asset is helpless against something. By the same logic, an F-4D Phantom on a CAP patrol over Vietnam is also defenseless from a SAM battery or AAA. The best it can do is avoid missiles or shells and it has no weapon to shoot back. Does that mean that SAM crews are cowards? Or how about artillery shooting ad infantry 20 miles away? Cowards, right?
