Picked up Raven at the beginning of Winter and it rejuvenated my love for t8. He is very hard to pilot at higher levels though. After playing Azucena, Zafina, Eddy, Raven is way harder to master cause he has so many more moves and they're much more situational. Like with Azucena it's a condensed gameplan, just get into stance, and there's only 2. But raven has 3 officially and 4 if you consider crouch dash. It's easy to get paralysis by analysis cause you have to remember what moves are good for what situation. The byproduct is he can be played in any style. He can rush down great, he has top tier keep out, he has good combo damage, he has a scary heat mode state, he can fish counter hits etc. The hard part is those are ALL different sets of moves and strategies.

5:26 you can manually backturn with Back + 34 Super important move to learn, you can use it to see how your opponent reacts to your stance safely. It takes 5 frames and its great for baiting people into throwing unsafe things onto your block thinking you are backturned.

5:25 your SAFEST and FASTEST way out of backturn is a manual stance cancel, b3+4. the extended back dash and parry may be cool but when you need frame tight defense against actual knowledgeable people, use b3+4. I believe from what I remember, it takes like 5f to get out of stance with the manual. Making a -4 move like db2, -9 and un-backturn punishable. This is basis of what the immortal soul will teach you

These moves can be followed up with either FF+2, F,F+ 3 or FF+4 - (BT) 3+4 - F,3,2 (if 2 is CH it will knock them down legs up proceed with followup.) - Once you run out of heat you can only followup with F,F+4 when 1+2 hits.

I just want to say for any aspiring Raven players who are thinking of picking him up, he has probably one of the scariest kits to look at. His stances are NOT safe without consideration unlike most other stance characters, which makes him seem pretty vulnerable with any button press. But because of that, I can confidently say that pretty much 90% of the playbase has never labbed him, probably second only to Zafina. In reality, as the Raven player, you only need to know maybe 5 to 7 staple moves and they aren't at all complicated to remember, while the oppenent may feel like they're going against something insurmountable- mind games is key with raven, and you'll have fun playing with his kit once you get used to abusing these essentials. After that add to the mental stack with moves like the sidestappable unblockable in back flip, 3+4 and B 1+2, some of my favourites lol. Insanely fun character.

When Raven is in backturn, he can actually block instantly, but you can't hold back alone. You have to hit b+3+4 to instantly switch back out of his stance and be able to block. It is an odd quirk to the character, but doing that makes his backturn stance much more annoying to deal with for the opponent. On top of that, Raven also has the benefit of one of the longest range mid pokes, his db2. It is an amazing button. It is an elbow, so beats most parry type moves, the range can be extended and have better tracking by doing it out of his crouch dash, it puts him into his dangerous backturn stance, and by using the b+3+4 to cancel backturn, you can create some hesitation from the opponent that really opens up your offense even from negative frames. Raven also has really strong defense with his keepout moves like tip range ff4, CD4, f2 string, and f3. I recommend a lot of players pick him up because he has a pretty unconventional toolkit that allows for a lot of creativity.

@genzo454 Right. Point being, nobody is going to be checking you out of your basic pokes that put you into backturn. If you're -3 or 4, which you usually are, you'll turn around in time. And for the times you're in a worse position, parry works just fine.

I would love for your PP videos to last a bit longer. Maybe an extended version on a second channel but I think your statements later in the Clive set rings true. It's kind of unclear why things work other than your opponents just running into your buttons. It would be great to have a longer set of games to demonstrate some of the things in an extended format so we can see more than just 3 matchups/players. Or maybe an edited version where you compile three players of unique playstyle (one very turtley, one very mashy, and one very calculated) and see how to navigate them using what you're showing us.

If you need a good tracking move as Raven, try using his df1. It's slower than generic at i14 ~-2/3ob, but tracks both sides and can be followed up with clone for damage or pressure in heat.

He's just really hard to mess with because he has a very unconventional toolkit and spends a lot of time with his back to the opponent and I think that makes people wary to try him. If they made him S tier...like Dragunov or Nina level, people might pick him more. However, he has very balanced strengths and weaknesses, and people I think would rather just play really strong characters that don't open their back up all the time. It's a shame, because he's really fun.
