It also stays true to the source material. People already didn’t like Elphaba because she was different. So it made it all the easier for the Wizard and Morrible to turn everything around on Elphaba. And going back to wizard of oz, the wizard isn’t a great person

Ah, that's right! I might have been thinking about her song with Mika or maybe an interview? I feel like I've definitely heard her sing a snippet. Either way, I'm still excited to see her full interpretation.
@zoejnobaptiste33327 ай бұрын
I think in the books while it is mostly subtext (I've only read snippets and paragraphs, never the whole series so I can't say for sure), it is clear that at the very least Glinda is into Elphaba cannonically. She only seems to like men for appearances and never does anything with her husband and thinks so often about Elphaba in a certain way. Though it could be friendship she tends to think of her as like a soulmate. Idk it is a lot of subtext but at least on Glinda's end it is easier to connect canonical dots to come to such conclusions. However in the play, especially since it is only adapted from the first book, it's much harder to come to that conclusion.
@WivesThatWatch7 ай бұрын
Oh, I completely agree! I discuss this in detail with most of my friends and family who will bother to listen. I feel like it's more obvious if you read the implications being laid out, and I think book 4 in the series brings more context to the nuances of it. I also think about their goodbye kiss in the first book, right before Elphaba goes into hiding. That absolutely did not in any way feel platonic. I support it being canon 1000% and really hope it comes across to some degree in the films. I've always felt like their bond is the strongest portrayal.
@zoejnobaptiste33327 ай бұрын
@@WivesThatWatch Yes I really hope they bring the subtext out in the movie and at least play it up as one of those intense homoerotic friendships. And I know Ariana did extensive reading/rereading of the entire series to prepare for filming so I would expect her to at least know Glinda is kinda madly in love with Elphaba. I can't say I have that much hope in it being highlighted in the script any more than the stage musical (and surely the kiss won't be included 🥲) but I have hope that both Cynthia who is queer and Ari who is an ally who has gone through the series to make sure she knew Glinda like the back of her hand, will at least give the relationship some level of intentional romantic charge.
@anony-missy7 ай бұрын
Even in the musical, I feel like at least some of the homoerotic subtext carries over. To be frank, I think it’s obvious enough I would find it quite ridiculous if someone were to flat out tried to deny that reading was there. The entire joke that the song “What is This Feeling” is built around is the idea that Elphaba and Galinda are experiencing a confusing emotion that they decide is loathing, but is instead described like attraction/lust. It’s Belligerent Sexual Tension: the Musical Number and that is clearly by design. “There’s a strange exhilaration/In such total detestation/It’s so pure, so strong”. It’s undeniable what’s being suggested here, in this line and others. But to spell it out explicitly, the implication is that Elphaba and Galinda are deriving sexual excitement/pleasure from clashing with each other. Now people may choose to interpret it as “just a joke” or whatever but I would find it quite insulting if they tried to insinuate it would be inherently wrong to take it seriously. It’s gay. Intentionally gay. Whether or not you ship Gelphie or think they should end up together (personally I’m fine with Elphaba and Fiyero being endgame in the musical but I’m curious as to if the movie will be different) the subtext is clearly there. And especially if it’s stronger in the book (which I haven’t read but have heard that is the case from people elsewhere as well) I do not know why anyone would bother to deny it.
@zoejnobaptiste33327 ай бұрын
@@anony-missy I definitely agree the intentions with What Is This Feeling is clearly some form of sexual tension but too many ppl go the ''It's just a joke" route when it comes to that one. I just feel the subtext in the musical is too easily brushed off by viewers who don't want anything overtly queer between the leads of their Broadway musical, despite the same musical cue that indicates Elphaba falling for Fiyero playing when Glinda tells her she's beautiful in the play (I think it's the opening notes of not that girl) . . . Which literally happens before it does with Fiyero . . . According to the snippets of the book I've read it is much harder to brush off Glinda's feelings especially in the sequels where she spends forever in her mind longing for Elphaba. Heck even in the first book I read a paragraph where Glinda literally goes on an internal ramble/tangent about Elphaba's hair. Not to mention that they kiss for crying out loud. I just hope the movie can lean into the subtext just a little more than would averagely be seen in the play since there's a bit more freedom of acting choices as nuance can be picked up much better on a giant screen than from the back row of a theatre.
@anony-missy7 ай бұрын
@@zoejnobaptiste3332 Yes I am also hoping the movie leans into the subtext more. And from what they have shown us so far, I’m definitely at least feeling the vibes between Elphaba and Galinda. I don’t know how far they’ll go with it, but hopefully enough that it’s easy to pick up on for anyone going in with an open mind. At the end of the day, it seems likely to me that the people who are determined not to see it will never see it. Even if they flat out had sex, I’m sure there would still be people arguing that it doesn’t actually indicate they’re attracted to each other. It’s unfortunate but it is what it is. Either way, I’m excited to see what this iteration of the story brings. And I definitely agree that the medium of film allows for a lot of new avenues to convey Elphaba and Galinda’s feelings and I really want them to make the most of that opportunity. I’d love to come out of the movie shipping them more. But as long as they respect the subtext that is there already (because it IS there, no matter what anyone says) I will be happy.

Thank you for sharing. Yes I am very excited about seeing this movie. I had never seen the stage play/musical, so much of this I am going into blind. I love everything that has been shown in this trailer. The music, set designs, the cast which seems perfect to me, the costumes. I had seen The Wizard of Oz and many of the film adaptions in that universe. Tin Man, Return to Oz, Os The Great and Powerful and The Wiz. The Wiz I saw as the live stage performance which was amazing. So I am very curious to see how this story unfolds. I get the sense that the two main witch characters played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have this deep love connection to one another that gets rattled due to the events that unfold. It feels like a soul level connection that comes across in the trailer, which I am very happy for. Thanks again♥♥♥

I would love to hear whether you two think Glinda thinks of herself as wicked during the "No One Mourns the Wicked" song at the beginning of the play.
@WivesThatWatchАй бұрын
I think Glinda has some major regrets, but doesn't necessarily think herself Wicked. I think rather that her actions have cost her and she can't even mourn properly. I think she's probably the only one with context in that moment to understand Elphaba isn't Wicked, she just was trying to get justice against a corrupt government. I think Glinda hides her pain behind the social persona she's chosen to wear, and swallows it bitterly for appearances, but is deeply saddened by her choices and the loss of Elphaba. I think to some degree she may even think herself a coward for not standing with her when given multiple opportunities to choose otherwise. - Lindsey

Hi, we tried to pause whenever we wanted to chat about the trailer. In the end, this is a reaction and analysis channel and we prioritize our thoughts and feelings about what we are watching rather than showing the full content. We figured if you wanted to watch the trailer, you’d do that instead of watching a reaction channel. Lindsey loves Wicked and she’s allowed to have fun and rant about it on her own channel. I’m sorry to hear it wasn’t to your taste.
