People that don't understand what this film is trying to convey should do a little more research. Wysoccan is a hallucinogen 100x stronger than LSD. In Algonquin Indian culture young men would be taken to a secluded area to to be given wysoccan where they would stay for 20 days. Wysoccan is a powerful hallucinogen intended to remove memories of childhood in said ceremony; however, it's intensity can lead to not only forgetting your childhood but also who you are as a person (in the case of the film their past and future) and ability to speak. The women were given the wysoccan to forget the prison that they were imbedded into by their past and what they thought to be their future. In the end after starting to come out of the trip they don't remember Book from their past because it had been flushed due to the tremendous psychedelic experience; he however remembers them because he had already been through the ceremony and was finally at peace with who he was in the present and in freedom. The film also touches on subjects in Thailand such as Book identifying with himself as a women, hence the cross dressing and a sense of self hate because he was trapped into the ideology that it was unacceptable. Champagne had to go the route of prostitution to survive and make a living thus creating her own prison. Wow was trapped in her own prison in a more western sense of having a viable job but still facing the harsh realities of violence and was the one to first suggest escaping. In the case of Kat she was dealing with being poverty struck and being robbed and to put simply kicked when she's down, another theme more relatable to western societies. Beautiful film, editing, and as always sound design from Wiwek and Skrillex. Wish more people would think outside of the box and make pieces of art like this.

Just my perceptions from my knowledge of both Thai culture and hallucinogenic rituals. I think this is far more viable than it simply being a "death trip". It also touches on many more tribal cultures with the dancing, aesthetics, and views of life, death, and what it means to be truly living in the present. Essentially after "facing themselves" all of the free people have achieved Zen.

book (the guy) commits suicide, thats why in the symbolic scene he shoots himself in the mirror, looks at himself then packs his bags with the gun to kill himself. they even said they havent seen him in a while, and champagne almost cried and wow said you're stronger than that. wow died when the kid shot her, the fat guy killed champagne and the food theif killed kat. this is all just an afterlife trip. all the deceased are in white. The cage just symbolizes the in between, between two worlds. this shorr film theory has to be correct since for a known fact book dies and it's the only way they reconnect with him. l

I think this is the most convincing story. I speak Thai, and the translation isn't 100% accurate. The subtitles say at one point that one of the girls wants to "get out of the city," but she's actually saying in Thai something along the lines of "sometimes I want to leave this Earth," probably an analogy for suicide or at the very least a desire to die. Your theory fits well with that.

Siento que las personas, más que personas son significados, KAT significa opresión y degradación, WOW es locura, champagne es adulteria y BOOK es sabiduría, por eso BOOK aparece afuera de jaula, el siempre estuvo fuera de la jaula

My interpetation of all 3 Acts. Act 1: I think in act 1 all three girls die. The intruder kills Kat, The Student Kills WoW and The Fat dude kills Champagne. When we see Book introduced it shows him freaking out in womans clothing making you think he is unhappy with his lifestyle when in reality he is reacting to the deaths of his three bestfriends. Act 2: This act starts off with just the three females going on their agreed voyage as they discuss not seeing book in a few days all correlation with the possibilty of the girls being dead. At the time of death your Pineal gland release DMT which gives you hallucenogenic affects at the time of death which is what i think gets described with the ritual the fro guy explains. Act 3: Book ends up commiting suicide at the news of losing his friends and becomes re united with them at the cage. I think a possibility as to why we see the three girls in the cage and book outside. the three gals lifes were taken at the expense of someone else and Books life was taken by his own hands. Therefore the reason why the girls dont remember who book is at the end. I Doubt this is spot on but this is my opinion on it. All in all super good.

This film represents people breaking free from their day to day 9 - 5 jobs and not letting the government control what they eat, how they act, and their social norms. OWSLA has all ways been a "place" where I feel free. The music transports me to another plane of existence and takes me out of my horrible reality. The same goes for these free thinking people. When they hear the music and dance it makes them forget about their past life's, demons, and bad memories. Instead of keeping them locked inside themselves they release it through song and dance sending the their past life's bad memories to a "cage" where they can forget about them. This exactly how I feel when I listen to music and the amazing artists on the OWSLA label. OWSLA and the fans are the free thinking people who have escaped from their endles cycle of life and fucked the system.

This....is.....FANTASTIC! I don't know why, but I absolutely love this! The concept of trying to get away from reality and escaping to a place where you can be free is so interesting, and I feel is really depicted greatly here! When they dance, they feel they can get away from reality. They feel these emotions that make them feel free, and 'let go' of there past memories. The cage is supposed to be where their inner demons are trapped. As long as they're in there, they're free to be themselves. The ending was the man who tried to dress as a woman, that was his inner demon trying to help the other inner demons get out. The substance they drank put the demons and dark memories in the cages. Every time they dance, they trigger a drug-like trance that makes them feel free. The paint and outfits and such represent how free they feel. That's my theory of what this is about, anyway. This is so amazing, I hope Slrillex Wiwek team up again to make another amazing short film like this!

Shaman (Taitas) in the Colombian Amazon drink a plant similar to this one (Datura), they call Borrachero (Brugmansia). It's only used by Shaman who have trained for many years with other sacred plants to be able to have a coherent vision with Borrachero. Otherwise, the experience can be painfully disorienting, lasting anywhere from 2 to 5 day, where you become lost in the vision moving between memories and not knowing what is real or when it will end. A safer way to use the plant (remembering to be respectful of the plant and asking for permission) is to make an infusion and apply a few drops to your head. It's strong enough that it still has effects through the skin. Healing is a long journey. Unfortunately, there are not shortcuts to wipe the slate clean and forget or escape our lives. Instead there are many guides that can help us along the way, but we still have to do the work. If you are interested in plant medicine, look into visiting the amazon and attending an Ayahuasca ceremony with an indigenous Shaman (Taita or Paje).

my theory is that the girls and book all died in act 1. The cage symbolizes the world they always lived in, and that they couldn't run away from their lives. The reason Book was out of the cage, was because he shot himself, and went out on his own terms, and died being himself, not conforming to the shape of the cage.

But I would love to see a 2h version, I mean a real full movie version with more introduction and build up into the story, more in deph and story telling about the differents caracters and the city; some few transition to have a smoother experience and some unrealesed track by wiwek & skrillex because they fit really good the mind of the movie :)

I think the dude with the fro that made them drink the wysoccan tricked them into thinking that everyone drinks it, but they actually don't. It seems like Book was in that tribe before the girls got there but when he saw them in the cage he remembered their names but the girls didn't remember him (remember the fro dude said it would purge all past and future). So that would mean that Book didn't drink the stuff. Not sure if I'm right though, it could be that they'll remember him after the effect wears off

Aren't we all in that cage ? Just in different places with different people.
@jrluiz138 жыл бұрын
This is my theory on it. All there girls have done bad in their lives Idk What wow did but kat killed that one person who was eating her food when he was hungry. And the other one uses her body for prostitution so yeah. Now I don't think kat died with that little boy pointing the gun at her. Idk if she ended up killing him or what. But she didn't die. So for book I think he was having problems to but he didn't do anything bad but he also left to be free. So when the girls are on the boat and they saying we will die anyways and that they think that they are drifting towards the sun and the light I thought they most be dead. But I think that's just them hallucinating from lack of water and food. Finally when they get to the small village and they are offered a way to cleanse them selves and so that they can be accepted. And that is with that thing he gives them. Called "wysoccan". So I looked it up and this is what it says...
@jrluiz138 жыл бұрын
"Young men of the Algonquin Indians would be taken to a secluded area to imbibe a plant mixture called wysoccan (derived from Jimson Weed), which is a powerful hallucinogen intended to remove memories of childhood. This was administered over a period of 20 days. For the Algonquin, it would have been a powerful experience to mark the separation between adulthood and childhood. As well as suppressing memory and creating vivid hallucinations, it is a potentially lethal plant. Those who survived occasionally forgot who they were or how to speak. Surviving such an ordeal intact was as much a test of strength as a rite of passage." So they are actually in a physical cage so that they can forget everything and if they make it and don't die they will be free. But sad to say. They die that is why book says you don't remember me. No they don't becuse they didn't make it. They died and what he sees is their inner demons like what made them bad. Still think more about book tho. Did he die to?
@jrluiz138 жыл бұрын
I think he didn't becuse that's why he is outside the cage and not inside becuse he didn't do anything bad and he got to the village and went to go look for them. Idk lol. Anyone?
