It's really unfortunate that this was the route they went - I just hope they are at least willing to hear our feedback and at minimum reduce the amount of grinding involved to get the badges. Even cutting the requirements in half would be a big improvement.

It just encourages more botting. The game is infested with bots in every endgame farm zone, and making tedious skill-less tasks prolific to access the actually fun parts of the game actively incentivizes people to resort to botting.

I personally prefer updates to the early and mid game over increasing the level cap by 10 and adding a new world. Honestly KI should just add more level scaling dungeons for all the pve grinders who need something to do (even though there is a lot if ppl would just give things like pvp and housing a try)

You’re definitely right about the devs being between a rock and a hard place when it comes to prioritizing rhoshambo versus blade+aoe strats. Even though I’ve never touched PvP before, I still think rhoshambo is a very cool system that I wish was implemented more in the main game. As iconic as the classic blade+aoe strat is, it has very little depth and I think the game’s best chance at becoming an actual *strategy card game* is with advanced content. Unfortunately since basically every boss fight has a minion, aoe will remain an optimal strategy. And that’s not even getting into the inhumane spellement grind/barrier to entry it takes to actually access some of these advanced content versions of spells.

It’s a really hard balance to strike. I think the devs almost wish they could just hit the reset button on combat as a whole and rebuild it from the ground up to encourage rhoshambo tactics but that’s just not feasible so we almost have two separate games now: standard PVE and PVP/advanced content that are really at odds with each other. Idk if there’s a perfect solution here that doesn’t upset a huge amount of people 😕

@@Zaephadefinitely, and I think we’re starting to see the cracks in the foundation. There are entire legacy systems that have no place in today’s game like minions, absorbs, and stuns. Some issues were fixed pretty easily (i.e. replacing hungry caterpillar’s absorb with an overtime heal - a widely agreeable and liked change) but others have gone unnoticed like useless stun “utility” on arc 2 spells like medusa, frost giant, basilisk etc. Remember snow drift? Ice armor? Shadow sentinel and seraph?

Ideally, the spell fusion and/or roshambo should have been introduced in arc 2. Although I could have seen a case for it (sun, moon star spells being introduced + shadow spells) for push a push to them being introduced arc 3. Spell fusion is an arguably simple situation. Start with mono fusion as the introduction to get our stronger spells. Basically have us have basic spells that do one specific thing and then we unlock the monofusions to make the more complex spells. This would be the arc 2 spell growth for the most part. For Roshambo, you basically need solo bosses or a significantly easier method of duel schooling. If each school has unique features and those features are required to get pass the boss then we have massive bottlenecks unless you can either 1. Train multiple schools at the same time 2. Guarentee team formations in casual or 3. Have various instances of bosses for each school to be able to handle. Options 2 is a mess waiting to happen. Option 3 not only is more work but also losing the spirit of the game. Option 1 has multiple options, which could work. The easiest fix is to either have training point resets be easy to do for little cost. As long as the basic version of required spells is available using said spell as a gatekeeper would be possible. On the flip side, this would require significant backtracking every time bosses swap to different requirements. Another option is to do farming of bosses for essence (spellements) of required spell types. We basically already have this, but we get back to the problem of school identity where if everyone school has these tools. Potency could be an option to solve the school identity issue but scaling those properly would be an issue.

I’ve only played strictly PvE since the game came out (except beastmoon love me some Beastmoon, stoked for the new forms) and the idea of advanced content makes me SO intimidated, I’ve been trained to play a certain way for so long that relearning new combat so late into the game seems daunting and impossible. I %100 see why finding balance is nearly intangible. What could they even do to PvE at this point other than make new worlds on par with advance content, which would kill majority of the player base.

It’s so hard to get hyped when even the dual school utility spells don’t even have a strong place. It’s also a little frustrating that the new selenopolis spells only are semi viable for some schools but outclassed for other schools. Best part of this update is the graphic update for sure.

You deserve way more credit than you get. The way you consistently have given content new and old, and even helped me personally relearn some metas/game mechanics needs to shine more. I’m so surprised you haven’t branched out to different content, or even tried narrating. I will say that as a cooprative player, weaving is only good for rank 2 where you can get ways to buff your allies, its made a lot of my kiosk grinding much easier now that I have a good double blade to throw where its needed. For PVE the only school that frankly LOVES this update is Balance since celestia is around the point where balance bosses hard wall progression so an easy access to a prism, and some really nasty prisms at that, drastically improves the solo power of that school.

As a player who's attempting to make a balance/fire wizard and heard the spell weaving mechanic, I was very excited to hear that they were gonna more freedom to duel schools since it's roughly strict. Labors does sound good in concept but shows little rewards in terms of jewels and spells (speaking as a player who prefers pve).

See the problem with the PvE side of things is Pvers don’t use single hit spells unless it’s a single boss but even then there is a much bigger problem. The 7 pip AoEs. Spells like Orth or Storm lord are so broken to the point that you really don’t need any other spell

Honestly I would love to see AoE rescaled, the spells you mentioned have killed all replayability for me, I want to make wizards of a new school but I just know it’s the same rinse and repeat. Frog, tempest, meteor, blizzard until you unlock the 7 pip AoE and use those for the rest of the game until 170

With the Selenopolis enemies having access to the gambit and clear spells themselves, it feels like the game after Arc 3 is going to shift from AoE to countermagic. Granted, this is a solo-death player saying this who cranks up resistance as high as I can so that I can drag the fights out, but still. If they wanted to make spellweaving more interesting, they should definitely play more into the whole gimick wheel they have made; Death still has the most useful traps instead of myth, balance has more useful negative charms (that don't have drawbacks), and Ice needs some more shields to stack to topple balance from its high place. I would have loved for there to be spells for the rank 1 of spellweaving being exactly what each school is supposed to specialize in; Storm with blades for it and your school, Myth for a trap for it and your school, Death for a weakness on the opponent as part of a woven spell, Life a heal over time with a woven spell, Fire a DoT with a woven spell, and Ice a Shield woven into your school's specialty.

I mean... If these were made for PvP players in mind, that's even worse. I dont think PvP players wanna waste their time to do pointless busywork just to get a spell. They want to "PVP" not do PvE busywork. Sad thing is, I've been using pins to dual school and set up my own gambits with upgraded spells and it was a blast in PvE. Setting up DoTs with my fire spells to buff Treant's gambit is really fun. It makes my Fire both a viable hitter AND support healer all in one package. I think dual schooling is a good idea on paper, because in a "Card game based " system, having more variety is a good thing. Imagine playing something like MTG and only being able to use one color. Some of the best strategies in that game use 2-3 different colors (Or in Wiz's case, multiple schools of spells, if that makes sense. Sorry for the terrible analogy to non MTG players). I think the reason why people like to use a Striker deck (Blade into AoE) is because the game is filled with so much busywork, that players dont want to waste all their time doing single target spells. Imagine killing 3k enemies with single target spells only... Yeah, a lot less fun all of a sudden. If you ask me, combat and game replayability significantly falls apart the minute mob fights become 2v1. It makes AoE's have too much value over single target spells. Also for real... if you're level 50 or max level, what's fun about killing 60+ level 15-20 mobs again? its the literal definition of wasting your time.

A note: They DID say they are going to add more Weaving ranks in future updates, probably add two more Weaving Ranks that require clearing Avalon and Azteca that will give spell fusions that are AoEs. I'm not going to hold my breath, and I don't think that all single hit gambits are bad - I am using a bottom path Ghoul, the one that sacs your shield to give you a blade, because if you pull it round one while your companion pulls a shield, you are gucchi. I do agree that it's very difficult to justify using these gambits and bottom path spells that replace AoEs with gambit single target hits for mob fights, but they are powerful for bosses that use chats to make it impossible to blade or Feint.

As always, your content is clear and fascinating. I started looking at the update when it went live and, even though I have a little more time to play than others, I was put off by the requirements for spell weaving. Still, I'll probably get around to it. I don't know why as I have enough trouble winning those essentially PVP battles in Beastmoon. As a Life player, I think I'd like to see more healing spells that would effect the whole team. Bartleby was great at the beginning, but even with the shield stats doesn't defend against as much damage with higher level players or enemies.

PS. I am what would be called a casual player because I do not PVP. Although I’m a pretty involved PVE player. That being said, I will probably not be messing around with the weaving and the fusion because I don’t see it as necessary to my game and I hear what you’re saying about the time involved and the commitment involved and it probably is more useful for PVP. I think it’s a great idea too. I love it conceptually and I’m intrigued by it, but I’m probably not going to put the time into it to develop that aspect of my game.

I got to rank 3 in a couple of hours and the final dungeon where I got polymorphed was extremely fun, even if it took a while to beat I had a blast, had to use strategy and gambits and stuff. I went with myth weaving because the skill is actually useful.

Im so confused at the amount of junk they keep throwing that 90% of the players wont use regardless of the difficulty of obtaining it. I just feel as an average pve player surely there are decent updates for us. Im also not overly impressed with the pack preview feature as you could always just click on the item you want if you see it or google/wiki. It still doesnt tell you how much money you are spending for it for example a useful update would be to tell you if you opened X number of packs you’d be guaranteed to get the item you are looking for. (the gambling aspect is still there). Im also concerned that we are hitting a point where stats are too strong 200 damage 70/80 resist. Im not exactly sure how they’d do it but i think we need to be dialed back a bit. Id say peak wizard101 gameplay and experience was between levels 50-110. The game needs to feel like that again. The power system has really ballooned.

So far from what I learned with my research on school weaving is that it"s very aggravating, time consuming, and no great rewards. And the over bearing quests you have to do to rank up. Not my cup of tea. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not interested. I used to like the fishing until they added the aggressive fish. That ruined it for me. And the cost of energy to fish is to high as far as I'm concerned. I love the game, but my love for the game is becoming less and less.

I am a casual "I like cool animations and casting my favorite looking spells" kind of player 100% I've had a Life Mastery Amulet since I heard about them, and after the 2009 tutorial, I thought you were SUPPOSED to pick a second school, so my wizard has had all Life spells trained since his creation. This update was super exciting because finally, FINALLY my years of Dual Schooling being a novelty would be met with reward in this new update! I was deeply saddened when my excitement for this update was crushed by a wave of "Blade blade AoE" meta players filling forums with "All schools should weave into storm for the 45% blade." And the only spell i could learn was a weaker combination of 2 spells I had already phased out of my deck. Sigh. KI is trying to make something really cool with this but somehow used the "Dual school" formula to get the "Blade Blade AoE" answer...

The reason that the Death Weaving is 'bugged' is because the fifth task for their quests is helping players via the Team Up Kiosk... and the Kiosk doesn't support any worlds but Wysteria in Test Realm. This will probably be easier in Live Realm when all the worlds are available. I think the issue is that the "do the story boss again" task only applies to those where they fight a cheating boss or do the polymorph gauntlet(since you can have other players join).

Despite the rediculous requirement to start fusing (killing huge # of mobs/bosses) and the fact that most of the new spells are divide (ew) i really like the way all this looks. But i definitely still find roshambo a bit confusing since i dont PvP much at all. These spells do help try the concept on bosses since you cant use most PvP spells outside PvP.

First off, I just wanted to say that you have a very nice voice and your input/opinions always seem well-informed. I'm very enthusiastic about the concept of Spell Weaving and Fusion. Although both mechanics (mostly the spells that they offer) seem to be underwhelming based on what I've seen from Wiz-tubers. The idea of making new spells from mixing old ones has always been a strong interest of mine, and I'd love to see them improve upon it. (Also, side-tangent - once I've unlocked Spell Weaving, I'm not going to go with what seems to be popular (Weaving into Storm) and instead picking what I feel fits my Wizards best. If everyone in the meta is just doing the same thing - duels will feel predictable and boring.)

I've recently dove head first into guilds, and I didn't really know what to expect. I kind of expecting more of the same, since raids are technically PVE content, but oh boy was I way, way wrong. Not only is the newest Cabal raid forced to use advance combat mechanics, it basically requires you to dual school (in Cabal case, specifically myth), so I will unfortunately have to complete the entire spell weaving requirements on my raid characters. :(

I do think another issue the devs should consider are the new barriers to entry they keep creating for PVP and advanced content, especially when spell weaving takes so much grinding. Cuz it just creates a larger and larger gap that players have to overcome to even BEGIN to try out that type of content to begin with. It’s super intimidating to dive into raids and PVP at the moment if you only have done regular PVE prior.

I firmly believe the hope on the devs end was that this would happen, to put the burden of these mechanics onto the players.

Hey with this whole spell weaving and arch mastery going on, I wonder if they’ll add a new type of wand? I thought this would be perfect to add a duel blade wand type to reflect the two schools you use. But with the discussion about spell weaving, it’s still in testing so hopefully if people are saying it’s focusing mainly on PvP, then perhaps they’ll fix it where it works well for both.

As a player who prefers the classic mode, this is disheartening to hear. I play with classic mode on to reexperience Wizard City back in the day, the music and details in all the areas are stuff I love to look at. Not to mention without having classic mode my game chugs a lot in most Wizard City zones with a lot of people in it. If this is the final discission they plan to stick with I might just quit the game. Its just a big slap in the face of most of us older players who want the nostalgia back.

Same here, I hate the shiny plastic look. When Wizard City was revamped, I switched to classic mode after a few seconds. The new graphics are just bad, they have no real sense of texture. I really hope that they won't be messing with the quests like they did with Wizard City, turning the main enemy of Cyclops Lane into a ghost bunny. I certainly wouldn't put it past Kingsisle though, it seems they make the game worse with every update.

I think there is a bit of preferential treatment to certain weaving spells truthfully. Some allow schools to work outside of their roshambo to cover their weaknesses but some also give no benefit at all. I think its crazy that the most beneficial for most schools is weaving into storm or fire just because of their gambits, whereas schools like balance give no useful benefit to anyone. Even worse if you do have a balance wizard and you cant clear anything LOL

@@shiitakemushroom6199 Not much. I mean it can help in some cases, like a balance wiz questing through Khrysalis it'd be useful. Lot of balance mobs and bosses there. But it really de0ends on one's playstyle though.

At 22:12, this ai is still not as bad as the idiotic AI for those minion spells you get at level 28 back in the day. I had the storm minion, water elemental and that thing would only shield or heal itself.

yes that's by design. Meant to tank, taunt, and heal while you lay into the enemy. - Source; a Balance wizard who used Elemental Minion every fight (Ice was my favorite- storm not so much)

From a design standpoint I'm gonna have to disagree with the "awkwardness" of the "help a party in a previous world" weaving requirement. When it comes to MMOs, if there is literally no incentive for higher level players to go back and interact with the lower level players, your game will die very quickly. Engagement with other people is the point of the MMO experience, and if it's an RPG with stats and leveling and all that, the people you're questing with right now aren't going to stay at your level forever. Once they surpass you, or you surpass them, what incentive is there for them to come back and help you if not for systems like this (and vice versa)? I agree that it could've been implemented better but honestly what good is "number go up" if you don't go back and flex those big numbers on the newbies and the low-level enemies once in awhile The unintuitive non-existent tracking for these requirements sucks, but I found that you can review the requirements quickly by clicking the "review quest dialogue" button at the top of the quest. I'll add to your concerns, though: weaving seems to also have been designed to address the "blade-blade-aoe" PvE meta by incentivizing bigger decks with higher school diversity. For the most part, it does that well. Unfortunately they made the very first Storm weaving spell a +45 blade (one of the best blades in the game) that STACKS with your existing school. So unless you're already Storm, there's no reason to weave into anything other than Storm. What gives, KI??

As a fresh first level 170 wizard on realease of this update (only the day or two prior i hit max) i was incredibly excited for the new spells and weaving. The new area looks awesome and has cool fights. However, my main source of excitement, spellweaving, was a bit of a let down. As a death tank i mixed with ice for the benefits of ices tank stats and spells. However, even after getting max spell weaving and doing the grind i feel the mechanic is a bit lacking. Even if the update came with more mono fusions for earlier wizards,(which currently require the new spell for each class), i feel that its lacking in actual dual class potential. With how the game is currently balanced dual classing is inferior

On spell weaving and dual schooling: Ignoring the stupid requirements to open it, we still need good gear at every level. Forget pins at max we need universal gear with pips, accuracy, damage, resist, critical similar to our main school. PVP/advanced already has caps so this is not a problem. I'm sure KI will not listen but especially at say level 100 and up, we don't expect to fizz in a clutch moment and we need to be able to hit hard...or why bother? I've always wanted to dual school, I save universal gear, had tons of fun with the Aquila gold key boss but there's no decent universal set that meets the standards we need. Also screw your "magic wheel" let us play any gosh darn school, regardless of our main school. The game is meant to be fun, let us use it how we will, as I said PVP etc has caps so stop gate keeping, unleash dual schooling without an enormous grind and let us have fun. KI devs don't know this game only try to change to their vision which is why they constantly fail to make dual schooling viable.

Fairly late to the party, im coming back after my yearly hiatus while I wait for new content. I see how 7k enemies to max all school's weaving is atrocious looking, but when you take into account that they are making this system with people playing through the game in mind, you're going to easily hit 60 enemies kills while just questing through the worlds anyways. Since so many of us are max it's annoying to look at but they cant just make content with people who have spent hours grinding things over the last several years in mind, because that would be counterintuitive for making good systems for new players that they want to bring in. I dont think this system is perfect, but i think the labors overall are fine. I'm not going to be thrilled to do all this, but I'm happy to see new players being thought about more.

I was so hopeful about this new mechanic, but seeing that this is more for PVp makes it makes me sad. I miss the days where you can bring a full deck to your boss fight or just questioning but now at higher levels you’re only doing like seven cards or seven spells and that’s enough to kill any mobs or boss. 7 spells, per deck is still the way to go in pve.

I don't really like the new 170 spells ... on principle of them being level 170 spells. Nothing about them feels like they can't be spells you learn earlier in the game frankly. Although honestly I've had that problem with new hitter spells in general. It's awesome to get new hitters, but a lot of them feel like they would slot in nicely during arcs 1 or 2 and be perfectly balanced for the time you get them. I guess they need more incentive to go further however. Still doesn't stop it from bothering me however.

You just go to any other of the weaving trees and hit “select weaving school” from the options. It’ll then swap you to the new weaving school.

Honestly, coming from someone who really only did PVE and only did PVP on Beastmoons? It seems very overwhelming! I only know what blades and traps do, and this seems way too complicated for the average player looking to just have a good time. Not to mention, what about people who are playing free to play? (Is free to play still a thing with WIz101?) Or people who don't want to spend money on crowns or energy elixirs? It just seems that this whole thing is so overcomplicated. But that's probably just me, since I haven't played in a while.

Gonna be honest. If they don't do something about these labors i am not going to even bother. Also honestly this might be controversial i don't think they should bring classic mode back. It seems pretty limiting if they want to update more of arc 1 and would grant them more creative freedom if they just stopped worrying about it.

They definitely cater towards the pvp playerbase more than the pve, this update is proof of that. I'm fine with the whole gambit system...but when its just randomly thrown at me at the end of novus, its confusing. 0 introduction too it and i had to spend time looking at guides and learning what gambits and stuff were just in order to do the fight. It should've either been a early game thing that you learn or kept it in pvp. On top of that issue (for me at least) the grind for these spells/badges is ridiculous. Drop rates are atrocious, few years ago i grinded out Darkmoor for 2 weeks straight, from when i woke up till i went to bed without getting a single piece of tier 3 gear, the grind in the game is insane and now they want you to do some honestly time wasting/filler defeat quests for what? I had a random thought that maybe they want to use up a players time as much as possible since the more time you play or harder it is, more likely you are to spend money, on top of wasting our time, more likely we'll need to buy more membership. It's just so unfair pve gets nearly nothing out of this, a few spells i might try but thats it, there's almost no real use for these spells, plenty of spells are way better and more worth it, i dont want to clutter up a deck with these new spells/combinations just to take longer to do a fight on top of using spells that just arent good, the balancing is horrible. Im especially mad about fire and ice, ice has already been slammed into the ground several times, it feels near impossible to play, especially solo and the new spells just add to that, atrocious damage, even at low level id never even touch them. Fire...please, please, please stop with the dot, i can't with it anymore, dot takes so long, i dont want to wait 5 rounds sitting there waiting for the enemy to get killed, they're only useful in very specific situations, otherwise its a complete waste of time, i can just blade up, hit with an aoe/single target and be done, instead of blading up, hitting and waiting another 5 rounds. I'm really glad they added these into the lower levels, makes playing new characters more fun since there's something finally different and new to do, but 90% of the spells id get id never even use even at those levels, i was so excited for this but idk anymore. Other than that, on the good side of things, the permanent marker/change of mana use is amazing, the crown shop packs and the bazaar change, absolute love those and the qol features. Really hope they rebalance the spell weaving and make it a little more worth while and not a huge waste of time.

Quick side note, i absolutely do love the spell weaving, its a extremely cool idea that i think a lot of players wished they could do for a long time, but it really needs to be touched up and rebalanced, make the spells more viable and useable for pve and pvp, kinda unfair to the pve playerbase to do such a massive and unique/cool update thats mainly for pvp players. I was really invested into this update and wanted to learn everything i can about it so i really hope they add more too it soon. It'll be hard to pull players away from the blade+aoe but there's been plenty of times when i'll aoe at the beginning of a fight and then blade up and use a spell i havent used in a while on the boss just to do something different, tons of really cool spells so from time to time i wanna see and use them, but 90% of the time, they arent really viable or time efficient.

The devs said not enough players used it in WizardCity so not worth the time for something 0.01% of the playebase would notice. But Krok was my favorite world so I will be a bit sad for my Nostalgia. In 5 years maybe they'll release 'W101 Classic' like the other MMOs lol

Everything covered in this video is from test realm and hasn’t gone live yet in the actual game. However test realm ended as of Friday so we will likely see all these changes go live sometime this week.

Kinda disappointed after learning how Spell Weaving works. Spell Weaving using damage from my own school is what I was hoping to use. Gear pieces at my level (51) don't support dual schooling, so I guess this content isn't for me.

This new spelling weaving/fusion to me is like Monstrology, never have to use it, not a requirement to play the game. If the new content has the same weight as pet and fishing, then, yes I believe everyone will jump on it. When pet and fishing came out, I quit the game. It was only til I got to level 100 that pet, gardening and fishing truly was required.
