21:30 This is exactly why I love Elder Scrolls lore. The history of Tamriel is to us by characters who lived in that world. Characters with their own beliefs and morals and and intepretations. Rather than give us the story through some wise elder or a history book of absolute canon, we have to gather the pieces from various, conflicting sources. This makes the world feel so much more alive, interesting and believable. Even if they are the roughest looking elves ever or giant lizards or cartoon vikings/romans.

Sorry for the late response, but I think that is the actual problem Bethesda has with the property. All the other races backstory is roughly flushed out in mythos, except for the Redguards. It may be why the next Elder Scrolls is going to be set in Hammerfel. Doesn't mean there isn't interesting stuff, like Vivec (god) was slain by the Yokudan King and his sword strike is what sank Yokuda. That it was over Vivec's kids that he had with Yokudans. Even with that rich info, you have to do a lot of searching to find out how Vivec came back to life and realize that's why he has two origin stories. One being born mortal and one being born a god. If someone doesn't know (cause it isn't easy to put together) it's hard to make a vid for. Even with that there isn't an origin story, just that the Yokudans have been in universe, and all I can have is a theory it is possibly longer than the Altmer, and Nocturna knows this (and Hema Mora hasn't figured it out yet). Sadly though you can't make those summizings the basis of factual vids, and that is about all anyone can do at this point until the canon is written.
@timyuusis33722 жыл бұрын
The issue is that for the mass majority other than "this war happened" theres nothing written about them.
@targetthetank2 жыл бұрын
@@timyuusis3372 I wouldn't say nothing, but pretty close. It is all outside in except for Sai Sahan and lore books here and there. A few stories on the first activation of a few people's blades, culling the blue goblins (bet Malacath is real happy about that one), and what Vivec wrote of his stay there. Vivec's thievery even shows up in his title as Warrior-Poet since one of the things Redguards are supposed to be good at is the physical arts. Redguard bards (can't remember what they are called) are supposed to be all over. The pantheon is all flushed out, but it would suggest that Redguards are not from this iteration of the universe as a whole. That Tall Papa actually is the reason they are here now. Crowns believe Tall Papa is Manus (Imperial insertion), but Forebears do not. Since there was an entire game dedicated to Redguards there is a lot more lore than people might think. It is a official side TES game, but most people don't know it is there.

All it takes is a single playthrough as the stormcloaks to realize you were played for an absolute fool by a man who is the king of fools. @Darkdaej2 жыл бұрын
While the lore is quite interesting, I've come to the conclusion the only playable game in that series is Dragon Age: Origins and its expansion. DA2 is ridiculously tedious and repetitive and Inquisition has horrendous controls, forces you to craft and therefore hunt for ingredients for hours upon hours...and makes your party members rather useless potion-guzzlers unless you micromanage them - the tactics options are massively streamlined. Origins was Baldur's Gate's successor. I'm saddened to see how "mainstream" this series has become.

@@TheModmc My guess is "Pressure from EA" Origins probably didn't sell as well as EA would have liked due to it catering to the cRPG fans. Despite a modern interface, for a 2007 game it remains daunting for the gaming casuals...and that was the point. DA2 was obviously made for the "hardcore gamer" and it suffered for it. DA:I seems to have been an effort to go back to the principles of Origins while being whipped by EA for "popular" features. *Whipcrack* It's 2014, crafting is all the rage, put that in the game! Hardcore gamers don't want to perform complicated sidequests and EARN their loot anymore! *Whipcrack* We need multiplayer to generate microtransactions! *Whipcrack* make the Qunari less dogmatic, they aren't personable! EDIT: Seriously, the Sten from Origins...who's supposed to be the Arishok at this point IIRC would have slain Iron Bull on the spot for his blatant disregard of the Qun...and would never have allowed a trans into his people. The man couldn't even understand the concept of Leliana being a woman and being a warrior at the same time. Seriously I'm not surprised Bioware lost most of their original talent team at this point.

One of the reasons I tend to side with the StormCloaks. The Redguards already left, so did the Argonians (if they ever really were part of the Empire), The Khajiit after that Moon fiasco (Either the elves lied or they caused the moons to disappear too) joined the Thalmor cause... The Empire has already lost. Nords are better off fighting for Skyrim than spread out into other realms where they don't have the kind of familiarity with the environment they have in Skyrim. So there's East-Skyrim on Storm-cloak side, West-Skyrim on Empire-side and one neutral Jarldom in the middle. You, the Dragonborn, decide which side wins; you can become Thane in all nine realms, slay or dominate the Dark Brotherhood; become the Leader of the mages, warriors and thieves... Never mind if they call their professional society a guild or not. And just how do they manage to put it into the history books later and have ALL your choices in the game be true? (Well, DB is likely a matter of rumors, and you kill Astrid in either path anyway.) But how could they not have clear record about which side of the Civil War won? Will they be called DragonBornside vs. others or something?

Cool vid, some notes to add: while argonians seceded and khajit bowed to thalmor, orcs and dark elves were both still part of the empire. The empire intervened a bit when orsinium was sacked by some bretons and redguards, and skyrim took in a ton of dunmer refugees as well as granted them solstheim. The thalmor helped incite argonian invasions of morrowind, so there's 0 chance of dunmer ever supporting thalmor or tolerating further rise, even if they have strained relations with humans

But, they're fundamentally different empire because 1) No dragonborn emperor & 2) they banned the worship of Talos. The only hope for mankind to not get completely decimated is to be strong together. It’s infinitely better to temporarily ban Talos worship then to have no one left to worship him in the future because the elves annihilate most of the men on the continent. It’s also entirely dependent on the actions of the dragon born. I however imagine the only way for human kind to endure long term as anything but full stop slaves is for them to come together as a United empire and overcome the elves in some fashion. It's almost a certainty they held southern Deshaan and everything south of Vvardenfell. They pretty much drove Dres and Hlaalu into extinction as those were the houses occupying these lands, and House indoril was reduced to a mere caste of priests as stated in the Reclamations. Blacklight is now the capital also, however Redoran managed to reclaim almost all of that land and now only have clashes near the southern border.

Side note Vivec, after becoming a god, went to Yokuda and had children with Yokudans. Not sure if he impregnated or got impregnated or both, but his kids are why Yokuda got sank. This is due to the king killing him with a special sword strike, because Vivec's kids went out of control and Vivec wouldn't stop them. So not only the Altmer, but also the Chimer (and whatever the other half of Vivec is, can't remember at the moment) were spreading their seed around. 3:16 Ayleids were called Heartland High Elves. Wild Elves is the name of the remnants of their race who fled across Tamriel after the Alessian Slave Rebellion. Besides that great video.

If J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the most detailed fiction novel series of all time, then I'd say the creators of the Elder Scrolls wrote the most detailed video game lore of all time. Like sit here and watch this and consider that the first half of this is mostly just background flavor text found in books in the games, and then the second half of the video is pretty much all of the events that take place in the actual games. You would be hard pressed to find too many other video games with that level of deepness. I mean you got a few in the ballpark - Assassin's Creed, Halo, maybe a handful of other fairly deep and complex RPG worlds that have also existed for decades, but Elder Scrolls still dwarfs many of those universes in terms of actual fully detailed lengthy history and actual detailed descriptions of the various tribes and peoples that inhabited the areas around Tamriel. And ALL of that doesn't even include the spice on top which is that many characters in the "history" of Tamriel are authors themselves and also penned their own deep fictions. So you have a layer of complex fiction that you can read in these games, and come back out of those books and you find yourself still in a fictional world with fictional history, and then come back out of that when you're done playing into the real world. Now THAT is deep lol.

Lol too bad the games hardly ever do the lore justice, the level of detail and scale that would be needed is astronomical. The only things I see that come close are fan mods like Beyond Skyrim or Tamriel rebuilt.
@Infinicat2 жыл бұрын
@@domusavires19 yeah technical limitations are always going to get in the way unfortunately. Still though the sheer depth of the lore is bewildering

Some weird map inconsistencies, and pronunciations I personally find out, but otherwise fantastic video. EDIT: Okay, having finished the whole thing, a couple more criticisms stand. Some of the map problems get a bit more glaring later on, and then there's a couple of large things. For example the son, daughter and grandson of Uriel V spent much of their reigns breaking the power of the imperial council which had grown due to Uriel Vs constant campaigns and thanks to his early death his son Uriel VI was a child and thus the Imperial Council had decades to increase power to their own profits. Then the whole thing regarding the Thalmor defeating the Daedra in Alinor is oft said and implied to be a mixture of lies and exaggeration, they even smeared the reputation of at least one Altmer seer-mage hero who saved many of his people after the collapse of the Crystal Tower, and when this seer-mage, Rynandor, attempted to flee due to the Thalmor attacking his reputation and deeds, they assassinated him.

Great video about the lore of elder scrolls. Perhaps you can also do one for the book "The Infernal City", story which happens after the Oblivion Crisis. That could be cool

How can the High Elves be the „closest descendants“? Aren’t they all the same amount of time and Generations away? I‘d say they‘re the *self-professed* closest to the Aldmer.

Bosmer and dark elves both changed their cultures and even bodies to confirm to their surroundings. The altmer are the closest culturally and likeness.

Just want to say I LOVE this video. Been spending a ton of time in Elder Scrolls lore prepping run a pen and paper game in the world. :) The origins of all the races and the creation myths also are very cool, though of course all the lore has to be taken with some large grains of salt as even the in game books and such contradict themselves. That said, there are tidbits of things from the making of Nirn to the current Elder Scrolls timelines that play into why all the groups behave the way they do and what drives their motivations. Ultimately the Altmer want to get back to being Aedra and in general are uncomfortable with the mortal world, and so all they do sees to feed into that concept. It all goes back to when the Et'Ada/Aedra who were tricked into using their power by Lorkhan to create Nirn were done, some stayed on Nirn to continue to create (like Y'ffre establishing a natural realm and building the "worlds bones"). These remainders of Et'Ada were the Ehlonfey, and they were of two camps...the Old Ehlnofey, which stayed closer to the ways of their Et'Ada/Aedra ancestors (their descendants are the Mer), and the Wandering Ehlnofey, who spread all over Nirn (their descendants are all Men like the Yokudans and the Atmorans/Nedes/Nords). The Old Ehlnofey were just as bigoted as the Altmer typically are represented, so they rejected the Wandering Ehlnofey when they asked to return home to Aldmeris (AKA "heaven" or maybe more like a Garden of Eden) and eventually they fought in a war, which reshaped the world into the Nirn we know and love, but as a result of the war they all were effectively "cast out of paradise" and so there was the exodus from Almderis to what would become known Summerset by the Aldmer...and I guess the same time the Yokudans and Atmorrans settle in their lands West and North of Tamriel). Then that leads to the diaspora of the Aldmer up into Tamriel and the subsequent Elven sub-sets (Chimer/Dunmer, Altmer, Dwemer, etc. and also the Direnni Elves and Ayleids etc). So the Old Ehnlofey ancestors of the Mer, who thought the Wandering Ehlnofey ancesters of Man were lesser versions and mongrels of what was left of the Et'Ada...sort of translates down into how Altmer see all of the other races, probably even other Mer, as lesser and farther from the source. The Maomer Sea Elves actually claim to be even more "pure" than the Altmer, and so the seeds for that conflict go all the way to the beginning of the Merethic Era. It all ends up boiling down to whose story is in the history books in the end. Are the Old Ehlnofey closer to the Aedra source than the Wandering Ehlnofey, who traveled and spread their seed so to speak? If so, then yes Altmer could be considered closer, but they were all born of Ehlnofey of some kind, so they are probably a lot closer than the Altmer would prefer to admit. One thing that confounds things a bit is Elves do live longer (several hundred years up to possibly 1000) than any of the groups of Men. So there effectively has been less generations of Mer since the loss of Aldmeris, and that may be part of why they claim what they do. Since it 6,950 years from then end of the Dawn Era, when the Merethic (or Elven) Era began, to when Skyrim starts in the 4th Era, there would be about 14 generations of Elves (assuming 500 years) and 87 generations of Men (assuming 80 years old).

Another great series! But where are the Orcs (or Orsimer) in all of this? Aren't they a big enough deal to be mentioned in a series like this since they are a playable faction? Where (or what) is Orsinium?
