I just did this job past few days and few tips: 1. This job takes time. Plan accordingly. I ended up doing a lot more then just changing the skid plate, but estimate maybe 4-5 hours if just doing this replacement. 2. Since I had ‘check engine light’ on for EVAP codes, now is a great time to also fix these issues. I thought removing the rear bumper (lookup youtube videos) was helpful which easily exposes all of the EVAP parts to find any leaks. YOu tube also has videos on how to make a smoke machine using common parts at home. 3. Run the gas as low as possible to make the job easier. I had it down until the overhead console computer said ‘0 miles until empty’ and still drive it maybe another 5-10 miles beyond that point. Keep a gas canister in the Jeep in case you run dry. 4. The gas tank straps don’t come with the Dorman skid plate. You need to purchase separately. If your skid plate is rusted, your gas tank straps will also be in bad condition. These also require two nuts and 5/16” bolts 2” long which you also need to purchase separately. 5. I had a lot of rust behind the rear wheel wells on the body of the vehicle. Also cleaned that area and applied POR15 according to the instructions. 6. The skid plate has 2 locations (driver side) that have clips for wire management. Passenger side also has 2 fasteners that bolt to a heat shield for the exhaust pipe. 7. There are 3 brackets in total that also bolt to the skid plate. Two of them are at the rear which connect to the hitch mount. The third is in front of the skid plate towards the drives side. Removing the rear driver side wheel may also help remove the 3rd bracket but not necessary. I applied POR15 to these as well. New part looks great and can have peace of mind tank won't fall out!

The Colorado climate has been more than accommodating to the WJs I've seen salvaged, as I am on my second WJ after two hit and runs retired my 4.7. Luckily I had not installed my $25 OEM skid plate from the local yard yet, so now it's going on my 4.0 before I have serious problems. Wish me luck! Doug, thanks a bunch for all the videos and inspiration! You and the usual WJ suspects have been life savers over the past 3 years. Also, if your people in the rust belt have dreams fresh OEM skid plates, dreams can come true. I bet I could round up about 50 of them today. $25, usually already pulled off and waiting to make dreams someone's reality. Meet me half way, say Indy? ; ). Seriously, axles, knuckles, calipers, it's all good in the yard out here.

I just replaced mine on a 2002 I drilled the spot welds that hold the extra skid plate in the center. And it was all bare metal under it and it made for a nice little spot to hold lots of road salt. Then I painted the entire thing and parts with a thick coat of black brush on implement paint. It's not an off road toy so I'm not gonna miss the extra plate in the center.

Rustbelt, 2000 WJ, currently replacing fuel tank shield alone and I have hit the wall. I ran down the fuel supply to just under "E" (there's likely another 1-2 gallons inside). Those bolts were a trial of PB Blaster, pipe-lengthened breaker-bar and impact wrench work, but I got them out intact. In my attempt to partially dismantle the original tank/shield assembly I have threaded ratchet straps through and between the tank and shield. The tank is now suspended by straps and the shield, with floor jack underneath, appeared ready to be lowered away from the still fully connected tank, but I cannot free the steel tank straps. I backed away from my dilemma perplexed, tired, aching and hungry, leaving the job in it's current state so I can pause, think, regroup and ask for tips/guidance as I ponder having painted myself into a corner, so to speak. The steel tank straps are preventing me from dropping the shield as they pass over the top and front of the tank. Each strap is locked under weight/tension into a keyway. Visualize an upside down "T", where the clearance slot for extracting the steel strap is ~1.25" from the top. There is not enough wiggle room to coax the strap far enough to release it through the keyway. I think that if I raise the shield to cradle the tank then release the ratchet straps such that the tank is resting within the shield, I can then lower the jack to gain strap wiggle clearance and get them out of the keyways BUT how far is too far before fuel lines and etc. are stressed potentially to the breaking point? Short of telling me that I'm a fool... What do you think? What would you do at this point? Should I give-in and depressurize the fuel rejection system then disconnect all the lines so I can just drop the whole shit-show?
@jaysmith50845 жыл бұрын
I would put fluid film on it now and everything else around it to keep it rust free for years to come . Glad they don't have steel tanks or you would be doing that too like I did on my nephew's ZR2 Blazer it got the works 😂 Chevy's love rust and money !

Just finished replacing the skid plate on the 04 WJ, more or less following the methodology shown in this video. Watching the video ahead of time was very helpful, email me your address and I'll send you a set of WJ tow hooks as a sign of my gratitude. 😎 p.s. since the subject came up in several of the comments, FYI that the new Dorman brand that I bought on line came without the straps. One from the previous install was salvagable, but the other was rusted in two. I ended up picking up another strap from the Pull-A-Part yard. I have to admit, replacing the straps was probably the biggest pain in the rear end of the whole process, at least for this aspiring monkey with a tool box.

Of course salty Ontairo Canada has had it way with the passenger rear quater panel and rear bumper structure. So ive been cutting and welding for days..a lil more and some paint... Almost done now

If you are ever anywhere near Manville, NJ. B&L is the most amazing Polish deli. Everything from candy to pastry to pirogi and beyond. Also, it is on my list to get that Kobalt on you and I discuss. Just hasn't happened yet. HAHA

Interesting.. I think I wouldnt mind spending the extra to have the 24v Kobalt. From what I can tell it is made by the same folks making the DeWalt

Mine is rotting. That and the rocker panels. Currently held up by ratchet straps too. Everything else on the Jeep is in great shape. I wish they had a better option to hold the tank up. Darn Michigan salt.

Underside of my 4R looks a bit similar unfortunately, my skid plate on the engine was toast.

Lookin' good with the shiny new tank skid! $200 sounds like a good deal for a nice stamped and pre-coated piece like that. This video did make me wonder, though... Have you had a tetanus shot lately? Also, we may have just figured out your fuel economy mystery... Less weight: You had a whole bunch of metal missing from that factory tank skid! LoL
@DEInTheGarage5 жыл бұрын
HAHA... Tetanus is one thing I keep up on working on Jersey Jeeps. And weight reduction! Why didn't I think of that?!

I don't understand why the straps sit above the tank... Kinda seems pointless to have them at all.
@GonzoAmerican2 ай бұрын
The straps secure the tank to the “skid plate.” Keeps the tank from moving around inside the metal enclosure…especially in an accident.
