I have encountered a priest who was emotionally abusive to me as a recent widow. This priest had previous allegations from another Parish’s women. He bullied me as I tried to reconcile to the Church. He told people in front of me that I was not really a Catholic, as I had been away too long. He bullied me in the confessional. These priests are just men & a lot of them with their own issues. They can cause serious damage to others in spiritual & emotion ways. Another wonderful priest expunged the hurtful priest statements. Jeanne ( retired RN)

Unbelievable!!! One whistleblower is not enough??? I still remember hearing his secretary bringing a covering out...And now again, for the second time, someone close to him feels the need to bring the cover-up out...because NOTHING happens!!!

Goes a little further than that. Charlie did a great job reporting this evil debacle, not just in this report, but quite a number of others that led to this one. Did you notice that Malone was, more than anything, concerned about how this made HIM look, how it could lead to HIS removal a Bishop? Reality is that, the only thing Malone was concerned about was how this world effect HIM. He really did not give a rat's behind about the effect on the institution. Sadly, there are more Bishops of this narcissistic personality type than anyone suspects. The problems that spring from that are manifold, not just about Seminaries as play centers for KNOWN perverts appointed by Bishops to run Seminaries. .

People seem to be missing an obvious flaw in all this: A Bishop is not a policeman. The priest who was abused by Novak should have reported him to the police *first,* and complained to the Bishop second. This goes for any workplace; it's police *first,* management second.

I just saw a documentary about an Orthodox Jewish community in Australia that covered up molestation and other sexual abuses of Jewish boys -- and they have shunned the victim and his family for "daring" to report the perpetrators to the authorities. None of this commentary is to condone in the slightest the crimes of Catholic priests who do this and superiors who cover it up. It's all horrible, wicked, etc. and 100% indefensible. Rather, however, my point is that it's disingenuous, false, and hypocritical to state, pretend, or even suggest that these problems plague "only" Catholic priests and institutions. It's everywhere -- it's simply that the Catholic Church is the "low hanging fruit/easy target" because of its celibacy rules.

While no one human institution is 100% free from all forms of sin and corruption, my new parish and diocese in the Episcopal church is so much better at welcoming to people of all backgrounds and it seems (at least to me) that clergy and all in leadership are much more held accountable to those that they serve.

The Episcopal Church isn't much better; it is rife with alcoholism (read up on former bishop Heather Cook, as she was a product of the dysfunctional Episcopal system.) Divorce is no impediment to ordination, and they continue to ordain admitted alcoholics and drug abusers.

As a lifelong catholic I'm shocked how long it took to get justice for the survivors of sexual abuse by priests in Buffalo and if it wasn't for the fearless Bishops secretary Ms OConnor probably it never would have happened at all ?

I’m not saying Bishop Malone was a good or bad Bishop but he inherited the mess in the Buffalo Diocese and that was incredibly unfair. No bishop should have to deal with this issue. Father Jeff Nowak had serious issues
