One of the components for me with engine is just knowing my body. I know that I'm always faster and perform better when I break up the barbell movements or strength movements in a wod early and often. I was having issues with knee pain and discovered that I have to break up my singles when it's high volume haven't had issues since.

My most annoying thing about CrossFit gyms is the lack of open gym classes. The one gym that I was a part of that sent someone to the games was also a gym that had open gym everyday with a coach available to help you work on whatever. Another thing I've noticed about CrossFit is the lack of a strict weightlifting class or just a gymnastics class. Those options would be wonderful. Sometimes I might see those things programmed during class time every once in the great while. Again the gym that sent people to the games had regular weight lifting and gymnastics classes where the whole hour was dedicated to that.

Going for Gymnastics (Mobility) because of the movements and engine to do the WOD properly. Core is a trick accessory from Ben, since your training core with every movement you do.

Very true - but there are different types of core training. Holding a barbell overhead is a different thing than sit ups, for example! 💪 In a similar way you might choose to target your biceps directly by doing bicep curls rather than relying on pull-ups to build them.

One of the most important things for any type of training that I need to work a lot to improve is my breathing technique. This probably falls into the Engine category but I think it's worth being a separate category of accessory work.

I've got a free guide on this if you'd like to learn more - wodprep.com/guide/breathing/

I learned a counterintuitive breathing technique that has helped me knock out sit-ups.... Exhale on the way down. Try it you'll be amazed.

Strength and core. But I would also include mobility because you need a base level of it to even execute some of the moves without injury (at least as a 65-year-old). Also, I like to do mobility on "rest days".

Great video but, with respect, mobility is not = static stretching and requires some specific accessory work if people have a significant lack of it

So thankful that one of my coaches is a physical therapist. She has really helped me get mobility! My knee doesn't hurt anymore to climb stairs or squat.

I think Skills, Strength, and Aesthetics, while valuable, misses out on an important element of accessory work: preventing injury, something that becomes more important as athletes get older. I think injury prevention is far more critical than the Aesthetic component.

Absolutely! Good point.
