We started homeschooling 2 years ago, and one of the big reasons was the teachers at the local Catholic schools. They are mostly all nice, good people, but non-Catholics can't be expected to effectively model the Catholic faith. The first question any parent should ask of a prospective school is "What percentage of your staff are practicing Catholics?"

The value of a good Catholic education over and above what a parent can provide at home, especially for high school age students, cannot be overstated. However you bring up *the* important point which is that all teachers at the school must be in the grace of God and ideally confirmed Catholic. I would accept a teacher that is Protestant Evangelical in some cases.

@@LoavesofBread Some of them don't. A lot of the students in "Catholic" schools are nonCatholic, and the schools don't want to "offend" them by practicing the Faith they claim to have. I see a lot of millstones in the future for those teachers and schools. And may God be merciful to those poor children. On the other hand, an interesting phenomenon is occurring in some places: extremely traditional Catholic schools are springing up. It's like the rebirth of the Church in a way....

If you choose not to step in and help someone being beaten, or at least speak out against it, then you are giving the, "OK," for others to stand aside while you are beaten. Contravening Christ's rule is one of the great causes of social disintegration. If you mean that you are PERSONALLY being beaten, you don't tolerate that, you endure it, which is a closely related but entirely different concept.

I work at a catholic school, I’m the guidance counselor and we have kids coming with these ideologies. It can be hard to address and talk to kids about this, but the truth needs to be spoken. I try to be charitable, but I let them know what it is the the Catholic Church teaches and encourage them to stay in the truth. This is a problem everywhere, and I am sad to say that even in Catholic schools. Unfortunately, here we see the kids indoctrinating kids rather than teachers pushing this crap on kids. It can be hard to navigate sometimes.

This is so fascinating to me as an evangelical who has been involved in Christian Private Schools. I’m actually kind of surprised that Catholic schools don’t require Catholic teachers. I know of very few evangelical schools that would allow a non-evangelical to teach. It just seems counterintuitive to me to allow non-Catholics let alone non-Christians be apart of an institution that is supposed to be about discipling the next generation.

And these are the same kids who will walk up to the communion rail and receive communion without realizing that they must be in the state of grace. These children and generations of children after Vatican 11, don't really know or understand their faith. The shelving of the the Baltimore Catechism which up until Vatican 11 was taught in all Catholic schools as a basis for Catholic children to understand the basic teaching of their faith, the loss of vocations, and the closing of many Catholic schools, have all played a part in this tragedy. I raised my son by myself, (God got us through, of course,) and we were very poor. However, I worked hard and sacrificed everything so that I could pay the tuition for my son to go to Catholic schhol, from K-through university. We had nothing, but it was a no-brainer for me to make sure that he had the support of what I daily taught at home, and that he would be a well-rounded man of faith. All was going pretty much OK, and he came out of a Marian high school with a good, solid faith. Then he was accepted to a well-known Catholic University, a Jesuit school. He had worked hard throughout his school years, and he earned many scholarships and grants, thank God. Then, things got hinky. The university started having Pride celebrations, gender-fluid groups, and visits from BHO. Now, 10 years after graduation, he has a wonderful degree, but he is pro-abortion, supportive of personal pronouns, thinks socialsim is good, and no longer attends Mass or receives the sacraments. He is a very good pray-er, however, and he loves God and believes. I am praying for St. Padre Pio to take the Divine 2 X 4 and smack him upside the head with it. And St. Monica and St. Joseph are certainly in play. What has happened to our Catholic schools???

My mother’s heart aches with empathy as I read this. My children are similar to yours. I totally relate to what he is saying. I teach ccd 6th grade and I've had parents get upset with me for "teaching" children, and not cater to their ideals. Things like "couples living together without marriage in church is a moral sin, not going to church on Sunday (or Saturday evening) is a mortal sin unless there's a special circumstance like sickness, injury, etc...but there's always mass on TV, why confession is so important and to make a habit to go, don't be ashamed, etc.." I've encouraged my students to ask their parents to take them to church or to confession, just like they would ask to go to the mall or hang out with a friend. They need that ability to feel empowered. The kids are the ones who are open to learn. The parents are stuck in their ways and can be poisoning their own kids without realizing it.

Years ago, when I started teaching Religious Ed (to children of "Catholic" parents whose kids were in public schools) I got told by the Program Director to tone it down and stop alienating the parents. This was almost 30 years ago. What were the teachings that the parents found offensive? Basic Catholic truths such as Mass attendance, going to Confession regularly, marriage, divorce etc. I was teaching First Grade, so how I presented these things were fairly non-confrontational, but so many of the parents were divorced and "re-married", not attending Mass, and so on. So ANY reference to actual Church teaching on these things was seen as an attack by the parents(s). Needless to say, I ignored the request to "tone it down" and confronted the director instead. Her response was that if we stood up for the Faith, we'd "frighten" the parents away. Each subsequent director said the same thing. I quit teaching because of the stress (it was volunteer work; I was actually an RN then) but today when I see the state of the Church, I realise I was right to do what I did. Pandering accomplished nothing. Nothing positive at least....

Nope, it's from his perspective. I think there's nothing wrong with homosexuality, with 2 guys or 2 women getting married. When I get annoyed with people who actively discriminate others it's not because of my "sins", but because of theirs, discriminating others. One more thing, the Institutions of the Catholic Church (hospitals, elementary schools, universities, Catholic Charities organizations, etc) are surprisingly not allowed to be Catholic, or teach Catholicism, or evangelize, even through this is also a part of their mission in addition to providing human services. This is because most of these organizations receive funding from the State which forces them to hire non-Catholics and does not allow for the practicing of the faith as a condition of receiving the money. The high costs of operations plus the large amount of people the Church serves who may not be able to pay for services have made it necessary to compromise faith in order to receive State funding to remain in business at all. This is the core of our problem. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS THE LARGEST HUMAN SERVICE AGENCY ON EARTH! Want change? Shut down all our services for one day and people will realize how much we actually do.

Indeed, it would be useful for parents to know how religion is interpreted at that specific school and what level of tolerance and/or progressive/conservative ideas they adhere to. However, I'd say you're a bit late if you do that at the beginning of the school year. As an athiest who attended catholic schools, I attended them because they were (very) progressive, good schools. Due to those schools I had/got a positive outlook on Catholicism and Catholics, regardless of its horrid history. We had nice, critical (mostly) catholic teachers, religion was limited to church services a couple of times a year and 1 hour of catagism a week, in which all topics were discussed, including the church's questionable (historical) actions. As parents and schoolkids, students one should look into the schools/university you want to attend. Had that catholic school been conservative, preaching bigotry, I would not have attended that school. Now I did because it was a nice school with nice people, staff and students alike.

Ok...the TRULY DISTURBING POINT here is that this venue he refers to is being called by a Christian name, is receiving tuitions under the lie of being a Catholic school and most likely enjoys tax exempt status...but is cleary not Catholic and doesn't teach the Truth as Scripture and our Lord and Saviour Spoke It...this is the result of the words, professions and behaviors of the current Pope... Whether or not he is being misrepresented, he is apparently a tool in Jesus' tool chest that will separate the Truth seekers from the faithless nonbelievers. I personally know practicing homosexuals who believe that they have a pass particularly because of certain Bishops and the Pope's words and actions to date.

Deacon Harold, so sorry that you had to go through this. People need to hear the truth, no matter what the consequences. The problem is that they don’t hear this from the majority of priests and Bishops and so for someone in the clergy to say these things, it’s probably new to them. The Bishops and priests in our parish have been pandering to parents for years and therefore we’re suffering the consequences. Glad you are preaching the truth as the apostles did! God bless you!

What he says about people who are rooted in sin is so true! Before I converted, I used to act like that about the teaching against contraception and fornication. I was so habituated to that life, and I did not even know that it was *possible* for me to live any other way. I thought "this is what everybody else is doing (using contraception and cohabitating before marriage) and it's normal, so how could the Catholic Church possibly expect me not to do it!" But with time, the Lord changed my heart and brought me into a new way of living. However, before I would argue with people about it both in person and online. I feel so bad because some of those people I dont get to share with them how my views have changed and how right they were! So keep speaking the truth, don't censor yourselves!

i escaped evangelicalism a few years ago (praise God) but while I was attending a certain church in my area, a woman who had come to our home group bragged to me that her unsaved daughter was teaching Sunday school to the kids! When I expressed my confusion and concern she said, that she thought it was a great way for her daughter to learn about Jesus and maybe be saved!! I tried to explain to her that this was inappropriate (so why was the church allowing it?) and that only a saved, well informed and learned person should teach Sunday school. Well, she never came back to home group after that but seriously? Why are Christian institutions hiring/allowing non-Christians to teach?

We as catholics need to be just as loud as the other side. We have been timid for too long. We always worry about upsetting the other person by what we say. However the other side does not worry about upsetting us. I think because they are more passionate about what they are fighting for. We need to be just as passionate.
