If you don't pay attention to whats happening in the game, then ofc you're gonna dislike it. But ''the hunt for the blue circle'' thing pisses me off as well. You should check out Metro Last Light if you want an immersive shooter, and it doesn't hold your hand either.

Jakob m8 My point is that you don't need to pay attention as the game holds your hand all the way through. I remember RTCW/MOHAA etc you had to read all the clues to find your next objectives, you had to know what your goal was, who you had to assassinate, what you had to find, the game made you pay attention, nowadays it's just a yellow brick road with a cut scene driven QTE experience thrown in to keep the kids happy.

Worth A Buy Thing is if you want to sell million+ copies you have to dumb it down. It seems to be what the mass majority of people want. I personally like them a bit more challenging and immersive (which is why I set down the first game halfway through, no idea what the hell I was doing beside killing a bunch of people) but for a lot of people they just want to play for a short time, get a rush, and call it a day. TL;DR AAA games like this have to be a bit over simplified in order to sell to the masses and cover the cost of development. If you want a more immersive game best bet is to go play an indie game which can take risk with a niche market because they don't need millions of sales to make a profit.

Dakota Barrett You have no one else to blame but the developer and publisher for that one. The truth is that even the casual player likes good gameplay. Even he gets the greatest enjoyment from it. But when you taught the new generation of consumers with only piss easy things, they start bitching about even a little harder things. If you want to appeal properly to everyone you need to build up a proper balanced experience. Nowadays it is just one of the two extremes and usually the casual one.

I can't disagree with this after watching your lets plays! chapter 1 was boring and repetitive as hell with that use pipe on wall, go to switch, power down enemy, go to blue circle, power down door, use pipe to open door, use pipe to open vent, go to blue circle........painful viewing to think, if it wasn't for that pipe you would still be stuck in the cell at the beginning

Totally agree with you too much hand holding all the time always an arrow showing you where to go and ammo boxes flashing it drives me mad because when you actually have to look and use your eyes you become more immersed in the game. Hit man 2 for example was just mind blowing to me back in the day because you could play one level a thousand different ways.

There should be an option to turn on/off blue circle help type things in all games in this day and age imo, then you can play how YOU like, There's so many games and so little time, if you wanna race through the game, turn em on, if not turn em off, if you get stuck and don't want to comb the net for guides and tutorials and stuff turn them on and then off, Would be an efficient time SAVER and you can play how YOU like, imo

I can't follow some of your criticism on the game. This game is supposed to be in the vein of (really) old-school shooters like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, the first Wolfenstein etc. When exactly did you have to know what was going on in these old games? It was just: Start the level, shoot, shoot, shoot, exit the level. It seems like you think that the developers were not capable of creating an immersive story. I would argue that this was a deliberate choice (to not force the story upon you), so you won't get distracted from the main meat of the game (shooting) and can follow the story if you like to, but don't have to if you don't.

I don't get why tighter levels are bad if the game isn't about exploration. I mean in DooM I went off the track to pick up extra gear as much as possible, but there wasn't anything really engaging in those rooms, I just needed the ammo. The pacing got screwed up when I got lost or had to backtrack finding keycards as well. Wolfenstein (New Order) has really tight pacing and a charming audio/visual style to compensate for their slight budgetary limitations. I did my first playthrough on uber throwing out the stealth for a run and gun focus and it was great, the last level actually forced me to stealth or evade fights as they became nigh impossible so I wouldn't really say the game lost its teeth. I guess the ending was meh but it was a good ride. 8/10 and if the expansion is more of the same I'll pick it up.

Jason Fenton Doom had mazes and secrets, the design of the maps were fan-fucken-tastic, not stupid corridors connecting one cutscene to another. Using the map editor you could see what those guys created out of thin air, the perfect level design with primitive gear.
@HeadshotProductio100
@HeadshotProductio100 9 жыл бұрын
Peter Lustig DooM maps were actually pretty great I agree, however, on occasion I have gotten lost and ended up running in circles. Say what you like about modern level design, but we have pretty much eliminated backtracking or getting lost from our levels. With corridors we can get a tight handle on pacing and ensure the player has a clear sense of direction. As games become more narrative driven, linearity is an obvious aid in storytelling, though there are other means. Of course, linear levels can feel restrictive if done poorly. Half Life 2 is probably one of the best examples of a linear game that feels like traversing through a larger environment. Not to mention that creating a bigger level with modern tech, that's up to our standards for presentation will require far more costs, not just in budget but man hours. Ultimately, linearity isn't bad, both an open ended or linear approach can be argued for. I think New Order's linearity aided the strong pacing.
@Bunkerknacker_Retro-Nostalgie
@Bunkerknacker_Retro-Nostalgie 9 жыл бұрын
Jason Fenton I always considered DOOM to be more of a skill-based shooter which required you to master the mechanics of the game to become better and ultimately master all the challenges and pass the obstacles in the game. That included the different monsters and their attack patterns on the one hand and the level structure on the other and even added the incentive of secrets that were not necessary at all but added an additional reward for the player. So by saying you got lost in a maze, you played totally within the ruleset and fell victim to one of the obstacles the game had to offer which it required you to learn and overcome in order for you to proceed, something that in today's games is no longer the case due to the constant railroading to use a (negative) P&P term. I would not call that a flaw or bad design, quite the contrary actually. Sure, linearity is not all bad, but this game and many recent ones of the same kind seem so focussed on forcing you down a line to tell a story which completely takes away any freedom you have while holding your hand all the time. Alongside the linear levels, you always have the typical "monologue" or radio traffic telling you each of your next steps. In a straight corridor. Also, what very few people get is that, while the maps appear more open, they are in fact just textures trying to make you believe that corridor you are in is wider and allows for more room to explore. This I have usually only experienced on consoles, however, we are talking Bethesda here and we know what "brilliant" designers they are. I personally would not use HL2 as a nice example of linear progressing in a larger environment, but rather Unreal, another oldschool, but not "proto" shooter. It offered both open and linear passages, introduced many different environments from caves to spaceships and native villages and castles. The best part however was the artificial presentation of time as you travelled along the levels, you saw the sun setting and later rising a tad more as you progressed further. Thus, I can see linearity has its pros, but not without proper exercising and this is completely missing in this game and many other recent examples. That is the only sad truth I consider valid and I've yet been around playing the original Wolfenstein myself back then.

Peter Lustig Finding secrets is a challenge sure, but running around in circles trying to find a key card doesn't really do much for me. It didn't happen often, in fact I've played the game enough now that I never get lost on those maps, but it was frustrating. Finding the secrets should be challenging but I don't think an arcade shooter should necessitate being bogged down in mazes. I generally enjoyed DooM for the raw sensation though, the strong point for me is how the game feels, it's all very satisfying until the instances where the game gets bogged down in the maze. I imagine some people do like the mazes though.

You know, I remember getting lost and frustrated in MANY games back in the day. Even simple games like Pokemon would get you frustrated without a proper guide book alongside to get you through caves or to tell you who has the item that you need to progress in the story. I for one am GLAD this model of design is tossed out. Spending an hour to try to find out what to do next just isn't my idea of fun.

***** I agree if the levels were just badly designed but I personally like to use my brain to work out where to go, look at HL1 (Black Mesa) you have to become Gordan, listen to the dialogue just to know what your job is. I mean if you don't pay attention you won't know that you have to head to the correct department and then get suited up. This kind of gameplay is what all FPS games should be, getting you immersed in your character. WWII games could be so much better if they adopted this mechanic, I would love to play a spy behind the enemy lines, having to take out specific targets, having to track them down using clues, not bloody blue circles.
@GamingTaylor
@GamingTaylor 9 жыл бұрын
Worth A Buy You are right especially with modern shooters....they are all very linear without any real strategy without turning the difficulty all the way up. I'd also say that many games do seem to hold your hand far too much, for instance in Skyrim there's always a indicator of exactly where to go, who to talk to, what to collect, what to do, and who to kill, and I believe there's even a spell to show EXACTLY where to go. "Clairvoyance" .

You can disable objective markers from The New Order (although they show up on the map, you can easily choose not to use the map), it also had some less linear levels (which you could viably use stealth or guns blazing) and great characterisation (particularly the villains). Old Blood does feel a step back in those 3 ways, the obnoxious stealth part in the first chapter will annoy some obviously, after the prologue. The New Order shares an issue with Old Blood in that they both have unskippable cutscenes, they are not frequent though but some are a little too long. We both agree though that on higher difficulties the combat is great which is what I mainly focus on, so atleast Old Blood satisfies in one way. So I was half right. But yeah you are right there is a huge difference between classic and new, but Wolfenstein is a good mixture. The health system, the speed, carry all the guns at once, finding secrets, it does feel classic in many ways. The Shadow Warrior remake does that well to. Like the feel of the weapons and the big enemies, with large variety of locations.

I remember playing Soul Reaver: Legend Of Kane on the old consoles. The coolest vampire story. Raziel angered Kane by evolving wings. Kane was ruler of the underworld and would not tolerate Raziel being gifted wings. He brought Raziel to Wheel of Fate. KAne broke Raziels wings off and tossed him in. However unlike mortals Raziel did not parish. Instead he decomposed slowly for 1000 years until his release which begins his adventure. Missing his lower jaw, and most of his internal organs Raziel would feast not on blood but upon the very souls of his victims. Impaling some of them first before absorbing their life essence as they died. The Soul Reaver is born... It was filled with puzzles and they were tricky. I felt like I was Raziel by the end, and felt a sense of accomplishment for never using a cheat. It took me weeks to finish but when I did I felt awesome, and sad. I didn't want it to end. Perhaps I am being nostalgic but games back then were so much more immersive. The stories were too well written to ignore, You had to figure out the clues by yourself and pay attention to the cut scenes so you knew what to do, or where to go. There might be some information that a certain enemy is weak against fire (or whatever). So you could be trying for hours to defeat them before you remember or in some cases go back to see what clue you missed. All that back tracking, puzzle solving, and writing clues down in a note book sucked you in so deep it was all you could think about but most important was that it added more time to the experience. You got good value for money. Seems that now game play time is measured in hours, not weeks. Do take in mind that this was before multi-player. Different games for a different type of gamer? or am I viewing the past with rose tinted specs?

The points Mack made about both games were great points (and finally someone fucking mentions the first Call of Duty). I feel like I must put my trust into indie (or at least lesser known) developers to get that old FPS feel back.

Did I have a dream, or was there a more awesome review yesterday Also I think this comes down to taste. I played the old Wolfenstein and Doom, and I think the problem is they want to add story. You should just spawn in front of the castle and go with it. Though now I think of it, Duke Nukem 3D did it the best probably. For a 3D shooter, I do not know if you liked Duke Nukem 3D but it was just shooting and that was that. No perks and or stealth,.

Maybe I don't hate this game because I got it for 20 bucks, I went in with no expectations, and I play it on hard. I get plenty immersed in this because I still have an imagination, put my thoughts and feelings into the character. This is way better than any CoD campaign. The nav point really isnt as straight forward as he makes it seem. I've done plenty of backtracking and searching, mostly cause I missed something not really hidden. However, from playing quite a few of modern fps campaigns, this game really doesn't hold your hand as much. If you want a more realistic challenge, play it on a hard or expert difficulty. This dude is probably playing on normal where he can run in the middle of the room and shoot shit to oblivion, and only covers when he fights super soldiers or mechs. That also being said, the game does do a lot of sneak, don't trigger the alarm, and progress. But it was the most refreshing thing I've played in quite awhile. I won't compare it to the original, because I frankly haven't played it besides the easter egg in the game. But how could anyone expect the same shooter over 20 years later? It would be so linear and everyone would complain how it hasn't evolved. Can't please em all I suppose

Hi Mack, I feel exactly the same way about the Thief series (one of my favs). I even really enjoyed deadly shadows despite the flak it got for adding 3rd person toggle. But the newest game has the full compliment of hand-holdy garbage you see in Wolfenstein. You can't jump unless they tell you to, button prompts, some bitch guiding you through the first map telling you how slow and stupid you are even though you now have magic stealth powers in place of a human brain. It can't be just because we're old and grumpy, Mack. These new FPS games are actually designed for droopy-eyed, slobbering chuckle-tards, so they can spread out on a couch and feel special and accomplished for finishing a game that requires no critical thinking, no skill, no hand-eye coordination, no stress or excitement ... just some thorazine and a bib. Fuck these greedy developers and all the drooling fanboys, they insult and offend every memory I have of gaming in my youth.

When listening to your rant bout hand holding (and I agree) one game came to mind - system shock 2 - so its a fps rpg horror game, but man, I felt I'm alone in there, I have to find my way, and actually make decisions that matter, and if I won't, no one will help me. And talk about immersion!

Hey Mack, I know I posted this before, but would you consider revisiting Dark Souls now that you have a controller? There even a mod you can download (DSFix I think it's called) to make it playable on PC. It is a really good game once you give it a little time and thought, and I don't think the review you gave it is really fair to the value of the game.

Wasn't there an option to turn hints off in the menu? Also, I'm wondering what you would change or add to make this game less "reptative." Personally I think the game is fine except for the long gunless beginning. I guess I could go for some harder puzzles/ secrets to find....

I don't know which FPS games you were playing, but they were all rather dumbed down back in the day. I don't recall a storyline in the original Wolfenstein and Doom lacked one as well. They didn't hold your hand but there was only one way to go, unless you count backwards. I enjoyed them for what they were at the time but after Half-Life came out, I never really looked back at the basic point-click-kill FPS when it came to single player because very few have managed to achieve that level of immersion.

I agree with feuerhirn for the most part. While some things and games have evolved for the worst (like hand holding) it is true that we tend to remember things better than they used to be. I am only angry at the fact that the 'dumbed down' things are now what makes a game sell well. While the more interactive and hardcore things push many people away nowadays. -In short, I think its a bit harsh to call this game bad because of the reasons mentioned. Can't hate a game for trying to insert a story to a game that was nothing more than go and shoot nazis

I don't see how anything of what you say about the game makes it different from classic FPS games, other than maybe difficulty. And that story rant, aren't you confusing Wolfenstein with Baldur's Gate by any chance?

Perfect review again Mack. Many games these days don't want you to think. Otherwise the masses might just think the games are shit, and they don't want that. Im playing The Last Of Us (bought for 8 squid fom the port) and there are maps throughout the game, but do i need them, no, i don't even need to look at them because all i do is follow the only direction possible and look for the white circle. And the game is the same thoughout, just different characters and places. A couple of hours into it I could predict most of what happens next. And it gets such high review scores from everyone. Well. just goes to show how full of sh*t the people are. But well, i knew that before anyway.

Haha! So true, stop force feeding bright direction arrows and easy maps to us! I'm 32, almost 33, but I would stay up all night playing the original Wolfenstein. People actually like to think! Let them think, and beat a level! :) I did it when I was a kid... So these video game publishers shouldn't be afraid to tell little Timmy to figure out a map when he puts down his iPhone. It's all about the money, which is the same reason why movies suck. But it doesn't have to be dumbed down for the money...

Kurisu Kun Sounds rather like an honest opinion to me. He's aware many people like it. Unless you are on the development team, I don't see how this is an insult. It's like if you and I go out for a beer, and I share one I like with you, and you spit it out on the counter, because you can't stand it. I wouldn't feel insulted, I would just laugh and drink mine.

I agree games have been dumbed down now a days. I mostly see it with rpg's titles being that my character doesn't feel unique enough anymore I am like the next guy to play will end with the same stats's etc. It bores me and seems so simple and dumb, I remember having to restart games cause I messed up stat allocation or had no idea what I was doing and missed stuff. Games today are just follow this reticle or glowy object no real player choice anymore. especially with the elder scroll titles I miss Morrowind style where I had to pay attention to my quest objectives to figure out where to go; no map drawn for you.
