People have asked the difference between games today from the classic FPS games of old that I mention in the video. The main killer for me is how dumbed down stupid they are now, everything is easy, more health, ammo, armour, easier enemies, everything handed to you on a plate, glowing objectives and if that is not enough you have a cut scene before each mission that tells you exactly what to do. Cut scene 20 years ago would be something like: You have to find a way to prevent the Germans from launching their missiles, good luck. Cut Scenes today. You have to find a way to prevent the Germans from launching their missiles, good luck. If you climb that rope next to you and get to the top of the tower you should see an air vent you can climb through, be careful though, switch off the fan blades before you climb through, I believe the switch is located next to the Generals desk. Once you get through the vent system look for three switches, flick them all from left to right and you should be good to go. Basically games today play by themselves, you don't need a brain.

Usually I find myself agreeing with your reviews, but this time it’s just too obvious that you either have dedicated very little time to the game or you have some unreasonable bias and you’re just calling the game shit for the sake of it. The game is rather easy even on “Uber” I agree, but there’s a “Hardcore” mode which removes health and armour pickups. This seems to address your major complaint and if you’re still not satisfied there is an even more difficult “Ironman” mode. I can’t remember the last FPS that tells its story as well as this game does. The cutscenes are well done, characters are beautifully designed, voiced and written, gameplay’s fun, the environments are varied and detailed, nice secrets/easter eggs; I don’t understand how this isn’t worth £35 (btw I got a copy off GAME for £27). If a game isn’t the best in its genre then it isn’t worth a buy to you? There are some annoying technical issues with its shitty engine, but this game is definitely worth its release day price.

Play it on 'I am Death Incarnate' or 'Uber' difficulty, its taken me HOURS (well minutes to be fair) to get through some sections, but it's proper old school FPS fun, this game really reminds me of the old PC games, which is what they went for, how did you not get that from this? Did you play it on easy? If you did you missed the point entirely.

This is very sad. I miss the times me, my brother and my mates played the first call of duty at a computer gym(where you pay for an hour of computer use, I don't know what it's called in english) .. I never got so immersed in the current time like I got back then.. my brother was in a tree and was sniping us and we teamed up cause we couldn't see him and I was throwing grenades like crazy everywhere and shooting all the trees..It was so immersive, I miss those fucking times..it's so sad .. it's what you remember for a lifetime

I personally enjoyed the shit out of this game. Great soundtrack, great voice-acting, fun, tight gunplay, some areas opening up for stealthy approaches, upgrade perks to fit your play-style, tongue-in-cheek tone... I disagree with this review, and I think Mack is in the minority with this one, just like he was with that shitty Daylight. To each their own though.

This has almost triple that, and (for me) was fun all the way through, and so consistent fun for a nice amount of time is worth-a-buy for me. I've had the luxury of avoiding the last few futuristic CODs, so I think both The New Order and The Old Blood were an incredible amount of fun, especially in an alternate history setting with retrofuturistic tech. I concede they're different from RTCW and Wolfenstein '09 and definitely suffer from the lack of occult/supernatural elements (I know The Old Blood had a few zombies), and have very little replay value. Maybe some time in the next 5 years. I also concede that dual weapons were a bit of a pisstake, but I do seem to recall RTCW and MOHAA having flashing documents and the like. Low-res textures bothered me too, but that's the world we live in now where every game is a console port.

You can actually change the difficulty while in-game in the options menu. Item flashing (Loot hints) and tutorials can also be turned off.

RTCW, was by far the best multiplayer I have ever played. I played it for years. Happy Penguin and TBAR servers were awesome and some great players too. How I yearn for a true follow up game!

I played through this game on 'I am Death Incarnate' difficulty and it was stupidly easy, you don't even need half your weapons once you get the Laserkraftwerk. So I tried the game again on Uber difficulty because I had heard it was much harder, and it wasn't, still stupidly easy, with ammo everywhere, health everywhere and ai that still takes 5 seconds to aim at you. The only difference I could see was that the yellow and black suited shotgun enemies deal more damage to you. Stupidly easy game, everything Mack says is true about this game.

As a Wolfenstien fan who has played from Wolf3D all the way to Old Blood, I agree with you. But I think you needed to address your points a bit more, maybe by comparison of an example. Like the feeling of isolation in the previous games which made you think crafty and the variety of enemies which kept you on edge. My problem with this game is that it lacked immersion which was a thing back in the previous games and upon retrospect, it needed to get something to cash in before Doom 4 could get out.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you on this one Mack. I'm a "seasoned PC gamer", been gaming on the PC since 92 or so, before games were even good on PC. Played the original Wolfenstein like you, and I'm enjoying this game quite a bit. I mean, it's not the next coming of shooters or anything, but it's fun and I am really enjoying the story (shockingly enough). I agree with you in as much as it's dumbed down, but it isn't like CoD imo. The regenerating health is only to a point, and you still get overcharge (which was in the original and is very rarely seen these days in modern games) for it. Still, to each his own of course. Like you said Mack, you are very opinionated in your reviews :D

I agree with you. I have played all of the original releases on the very day they were released as shareware (I downloaded them from my local BBS (It took a bit on a 1200 baud modem)), and enjoyed them very much including Quake - Test Build, and eventually Quake itself (again from my local BBS). I do not want my fps games to hold my hand, and when Return to Wolfenstein came out I was taken back by it, and enjoyed every inch of the game (several times over), and I just purchased Return to Wolfenstein on steam for a buck something. WOW, what a great game for one heck of a great price. Many people today do not understand what makes a great First Person Shooter, and they are more interested in eye candy than real solid thoughtful game play. I also enjoyed Half Life but now with how the console industry has destroyed, and made everything to hold a gamer's hand it has killed off everything that I consider old school, and I'm rather sad on how the Call of Duty (after COD2) has been over taken by the "Just give me the action, and my eye candy, and I'll pay you the money" attitude, and every game has been turned into Call of Duty action packed, and yes you do not have to think, just pull the trigger. Oh well, the good old days have come, and gone, and today's developers, and the publishers only make games to milk you of your money, and give you nothing good for it anymore.

It's a 20 hour during SP, according to the developer. So they need alot of space for textures, cutscenes etc. More then a typical 4 hour SP + some MP maps.

Yes, I know I'm commenting on a three year old review. I only came across WAB a few months ago with your Shadow Warrior 2 review (bang on!). I've been following you since and I've just seen your response to The New Colossus E3 2017 reveal. I agreed and wondered what you thought of The New Order. So I'm here. First of all, that was hilarious. Secondly, absolutely right. Like you, Wolfenstein 3D started me gaming (when I was probably as old as you are now). My gaming friends have had to put up with my rants on the trivialisation of FPSs over the last decade. I was beginning to think I was becoming the miserable old git shouting at dogs in the park :) It's good to know I'm not the only one to see how bad things have got. By the way, you did better than me. I uninstalled this cutsene-heavy, over-controlled pile of dogs doo after a few hours. Keep up the good work.

Get yourself a cuppa Mack. This is a long one. Gotta say I'm surprised. Although I'm fairly young, I went through all the old Id FPS' and I have done up to this day, with the exception of RAGE and Wolfenstein 2009, which I am going to get to. That's Wolfenstein 3D and SOD all the way up through Q3A, Doom 3, Quakelive and this. And personally, I feel like games need to update as things go on, and I know IdTech5 has its foibles, mainly graphically, and if I wanted more graphical power, I would have got it on a console, but I completely refused. It's an Id game, it deserves a PC. The way it's updated to fit in with the current generation seems to fit well along with the aspects of Id software that they've tried to keep. Let's also be honest here regarding your Call of Wolfenstein point, I just don't see it. It could have been a lot worse, there was barely any regenerating health (Asides being able to regenerate to the nearest 10, which I think is actually a better way to do it), they let you have more than two weapons and a melee attack, which is a serious problem with games these days and definitely caused by consoles, and from what I've played of it so far I've seen no forced stealth, ending of missions because of arbitrary requirements e.g. if you're spotted you lose the game. And any parts that work as QTEs or scripted e.g. taking the rooftops to get on top of the truck, are important to that aspect of the mission's story. As far as I saw, outside of the certain story important elements, there were no QTE takedowns, no required method of fighting, and not enough to justify calling it Call of Wolfenstein. Shoot shoot cutscene, although today overused, should not just be completely written off. Quake 2. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. Hell, even Return to Castle Wolfenstein had cutscenes. All amazing games. All with shooting and cutscenes. Now the game admittedly, is not without its faults. The melee fighting at certain points did admittedly feel boring and clunky, especially in the labour camp. The graphical issues I can see being annoying to those with high level RIGs, and I won't comment on those since it doesn't really bother me, I didn't come into this game expecting full realism on my little gaming laptop. But I feel like you've been overly harsh to the game here. About your story idea, it's meant to be cheesy yet dark, which I feel it hit right on the money. Bear in mind that it's a game about the "What if" of the nazi's winning the war. It needs its seriousness, but it needs its comic relief. Yes you have your beefy american action hero, but you also have the polish love interest on radio, the funny scottish fellow, the jewish genius, the german leader of the resistance, and pretty much its own version of Hodor from Game of Thrones in the form of Max Hass. Also, bear in mind that you can get a different story should you make a different choice at the start (As far as I've heard, don't quote me on that but it definitely feels like it would happen given how the beginning goes, so I'm inclined to believe those who say it exists). Also, I dislike the idea that you say it's bad to have a completely single player game with a long campaign marketed at this price. Not everything needs multiplayer, Skyrim, Dishonored, Bioshock 1 and Infinite, and if you need proof that shoehorned in multiplayer is just a waste of time and an excuse to bump the money up on a game, whilst simultaneously putting less effort into the story, jesus, just look at Bioshock. Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite are some of the favourites of this generation just gone. Bioshock 2 has been widely and correctly regarded as an absolute crock of shit. Seeing that Id, Bethesda and MachineWorks have put so much effort into this campaign which I'm only around halfway through but thoroughly enjoying, I'd never have thought you'd join the people on the Steam forums saying that the fact that it doesn't have multiplayer is actually a bad thing. What I came into this game expecting was a fun filled, paced, gun crazy romp that has its slow moments, some nice stealth aspects, some interesting new takes on the ideas that Wolfenstein's already shown, references to the old story and the Id universe, and although I didn't come into it expecting the next amazing FPS that will take the world by storm, I came into it expecting was enough to make me feel nostalgic and excited for the new at the same time. And that's exactly what I got. The better handling of this game gives me a lot more hope for IdTech5. Sorry for the essay but I was actually so taken aback by this review that I had to get all that out. Still trust you as a reviewer Mack, but I disagree with you on this one on so many levels it hurts. On an unrelated topic, given your dislike of this I'm assuming you're automatically writing off the Doom Beta?

386DX for me w/ 256k VRAM. Wolf3D literally changed everything. It had sound card support too while my audio played through the tiny speaker attached to the mobo for POST alerts. :D

Just rediscovered your channels, I used to watch macscorner back when I played MWO. And I must say, I really like that worth a buy concept! So many dissapointing overhyped games over the last years.... but Wolfenstein was definately not among them! Gunplay and pace is nice, lots of secrets to find, IMO great story and characters, many ways to solve a level and alternate routes... I finished it 3 times so far and still haven't found all the secrets. The only 2 things I really don't like is that you constantly have to spam a button to collect the countless pickups and that it has no multiplayer. But if it's to easy for you, just play on a harder difficulty, man. All those pickups will suddenly make sense, trust me! I wonder what Machine Games is working on now...

This game is not Call of Duty, no regenning health, much harder, combat areas are far more open, stealth is often an option, it's nowhere near as stale and serious, the guns feel powerful with recoil, when not sneaking it encourages a very aggressive approach not "move to cover, crouch, pop up, repeat" other than linear level design, it is like an old-school game. It's a shooter and you're putting the difficulty of finding keys over the actual shooting? On Uber difficulty this game is no consolized cake-walk. they just scaled it down, if you are an expereinced fps player it recommends the difficulty above medium at least (I Am Death Incarnate). You probably played medium and glided through it. Plus, the first quarter of the game ramps up the difficulty very slowly, if you're 4 hours in, that's just before it hits it's stride.

1. Its not full of cutscenes 2. Its hard when you man up and dont play on easy or medium like you do. 3. Perks mean nothing, you can complete the game on Uber mode without even looking at the perk screen. 4. Graphics are excellent on character models especially for 2014 5. You can turn mission and secret hints off, but you didnt and then moan about it. 6. Story is meant to be cheesy. You love Doom but that is exactly the same. RTCW had a terrible story with shit dialog and terrible voice actors. Could go on and on but I picked this game up used for £5 and would gladly have paid £30 for it, 8.5/10

Spot on Mack. As usual. And i did play it and agree... What you forgot to mention is that the game is almost unplayable on Radeon Cards and nvidia users can't seem to be able to turn off texture compress. Consider yourself lucky it actually worked.

I absolutely love this game, it's pure adrenaline and had me grinning from ear to ear :] Shame you didn't like it, there's hardly anything wrong with this game in my opinion. Levels are huge and allow you to navigate and go guns blazing or even stealth, the weapons are loud, and satisfying to fire off. You get to dual-wield shotguns....think about that for a second.

I don't think there's anything wrong with cutscenes or story-driven games, but if you're a passenger in the story and not a participant, then the game was developed wrong. Games like System Shock, BioShock, Metro, Quake, Red Faction, etcetera actually have good stories, and it makes an effort to include you in it. Games like Call of Duty and Battlefield just go "look at how pretty this is, now sit over there and try not to die while we do this for you." Gotta say I was disappointed with BioShock Infinite's difficulty, though, it just felt far too easy. I played it on the hardest difficulty and I never had an empty clip, too little health/shields, or too little money. If I did, it's because I was mucking about.

Actually,Wolfenstein 3D,on I Am Death Incarnate mode,was way more Run-and-gun than Wolfenstein: The New Order. It didn't even have stealth,and enemies would go down with a single shot to the head. There wasn't any narrative. Now on the same mode,on Wolfenstein: The New Order. I had to actually turn down the difficulty where the Nazi plane crashes into your B-25 or B-17 or whatever it is.

Call of Wolfenstein is exactly what this is. All the comments praising this game are most likely from people who never played the original Wolfenstein, or Return to Castle Wolfenstein. All they know are the last 10 years of shitty Call of Dutys and Battlefields. Go play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, or the first 2 Call of Duty games. Or shit, Half-Life 2, those were good fucking games. No combo moves, no upgrade perk systems. No seeing enemies through walls, or glowing fucking objectives with big flashing arrows telling you where to go. These new FPS games hold your hand like a toddler, and try to tell a contrived god awful story that has been told 100 times already. The graphics look great, but just because you polish up a big turd, doesnt mean its not still a piece of shit. I dont hate on anyone for liking this game if they dont have a real frame of reference for what a good FPS game is, and its so depressing what the state of todays gaming community is. It will most likely only get worse form here. Sigh.

Chapterhouse86 dude in Medal of Honor allied assault there’s a big fucking compass with a big fucking arrow telling you exactly where to go! The bjects you needed to use/destroy or whatever was even glowing. I played through Medal of Honor allied assault and it was great. Wolfenstein the new order however, you can disable the flashing objects and blue circles so just disable them if you don’t like them. It’s not harder than that! Just pause the game select the option and viola Done! You can change the difficulty mid game aswell. Also I liked the handholding because it didn’t fuck up the pacing and I had time to play more of the game. Also in wolfenstein 3D you needed a map to play it and guess what, it was a boxy (literally) maze where you shot a bunch of nazis as an amercan action hero and it was great fun. So is wolfenstein the new order. Just stop trying to hate everything. There’s also extra game modes you can unlock which disables loads of stuff making the game harder and everything.

Its a mainstream childrens game - thats why. My main games are currently racing sims - dtm experience for example. And starcraft2 - i can play those forever.

Don't forget to mention that Wolfenstein 3D by id Software was inspired by an even older game called Castle Wolfenstein which was a stealth platformer :) But anyways, to me, Wolfenstein 3D was mostly about simple minded fun, handcrafted graphics that evoked fantasy, finding a way in a maze-like levels, and SECRETS! Tons of secrets to look for!!! What happened to the secrets, even in the new Doom (besides the figurines which show on the map???)? We want a game, fun! Not cinematic experience!

I disagree with your "Call of Wolfenstein" criticism. This game has buckets of mechanics that CoD campaigns don't. It plays faster than CoD (it's arcade, like the original and RTCW). It doesn't pretend to be a tactical shooter. It's dumb, but it's self aware. The rest of your criticisms are spot on. The non-combat segments (find the objective, etc) don't leave you any reason to use your brain. The stealth is dreadful.

Wow! Literally just finished the game just now. The game is fantastic, I never played wolfenstein but I can say that I am now a loyal fan. Well polished, great dialogue, graphics, soundtrack, gameplay, story, no micro transaction, etc. I will definitely get the next one.

Meh, I'm having a ton of fun with it but I wasn't expecting anything different than what it is. Its actually everything I expected it to be. That said the price was very stiff. I bought it anyway. :-) Haven't played a COD game since MW 3 so I guess I've had enough time off from the "genre" to enjoy this.

RTCW is in my top 5 games I've ever played and I thought this was... very average. All the new Wolfenstein games aren't anywhere near revolutionary or enjoyable as RTCW was. Just a generic shooter using the Wolfenstein name

Although I did enjoy it, I did find a few things that took me out of the experience, so to a certain extent, I'm inclined to agree with you, Mack. IMO, a decent enough game, but for me, not a great one. I think I might need my ears syringing out because I quite often struggled to hear BJ's narration, and in the end, this became a source of irritation for me. :D

Just discovered and now love your reviews, from what i've seen i agreed with everything you've said. It doesn't matter if IGN or whoever says its good, those people are brainless idiots and the real gamers want an honest opinion. TY for this review as i was hugely skeptical about this game (Having played wolfenstein 3d when i was younger and lots of return to castle wolfenstein and loved every second of them). I cant get away from the stupid perk system they put in and like you said it just feels like CoD6 - Wolfenstein :(. I think ill download this and see if i actually want to fork out ma pennys for it.

I'm told the game takes place in alt-past 1960s where the Germans won, so you have these neat touches like the Beatles singing in German and what-not. How prevalent is that sort of thing? Is there a good ambience if you stop to look? On another note, though: 44 GB? Seriously?

If possible do a Watchdogs WAB when it comes out? You and TotalBiscuit are my most trusted sources for game first impressions. He said Wolfenstein was ok, and you said it was wank. Between the two of you I would conclude it's not worth buying.

I hated it because my version was shit on my pc. Sometimes it wouldn't load, I couldn't go down the path to my objective in certain levels so I had to restart the game to make it bloody work but even then I would encounter the same issue later. Shame really. I kinda liked it.

I may be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed this game. It fueled that gore lover inside of me, I loved dual wielding assault rifles and just absolutely raping everyone with bullets. Story had no depth, and nobody worshiped Hitler like I expected, but it was still a good game in my opinion.
