Landau fans like me on here make great points about landau , the guy that is insulting landau don't understand landau and may be doesn't listen to as much music and different styles and musicians as we do . Improvisation is a amazing skill and these LA session cats of the 70s and 80s did it so well, they would get together at the spud and just feed off each other's ideas they were playing, that's what makes every Greg mattison live at the baked potato so special, that element of surprise, stretching a song out to 15 or 20 minutes, giving the song a new time signature , giving the song new life and that's how live music should be , why play it all note for note? Why not challenge yourself what does it hurt? It makes u a greater musician . As for landau being boring , that's nonsense , this guy probably listens to just shredders and that gets boring. , I wanna hear colorful tones and melodies not just. 32 note runs, if this guy could open his mind he could see what we see. I'm quite sure of the over one thousand Albums landau has played on I guarantee u the producer and singer and musicians didn't think the rythm and lead parts he was putting down were boring, this guy wrote a lot of music for the biggest artist, their wasn't always pre conceived ideas, the studio cats painted the blank canvas, the steller people landau has played for is amazing, check it out at allmusic guide. Com. Landau is a tasteful player with some of the best note phrasing I have ever heard , he is so diversified and he can burn too but he is a great songwriter! I love these live performances since I live so far from California

Sunday nights at the Spud in the 80's were epic. Landau, Mathieson, Porcaro, sometimes Carlos Vega or Colaiuta. I've been hooked on Landau ever since.

I finally made it to the Spud a few years back during the slow week between Xmas & New Years. What a great place. Carl Verheyen's group was playing & it all sounded super ! He was using a small Combo from Korea. Talked to him about about it on his break.

There is a very short list of musicians in this world that can go to the deep places in their music that Landau gets to. And he does this with every tune he plays. And as far as "making it up as he goes along..." that is called improvising. It's actually a very high level musical skill. Some might even argue that it is the ultimate musical skill. It's a skill that Landau has in spades and I'm more than happy to sit here and watch a master make it up as he goes along.

I love the Baked Potato. It's the best venue on the planet with the best of the best musicians. I wish I lived in Studio City so I could go there every night. I used to drive to the L.A. area several times a year just to go to the Baked Potato to see Don Randi and Quest, and other great musicians like Andy Summers, Allan Holdsworth, etc. :-D

There isnt any value in trying to reply to the "comments" from @Howenow1. This is music after all and like all art is is subjective how it is perceived. However, the musician in me says if it isn't obvious to you that Michael has ABSOLUTE mastery of his tone, the connection between his spirit animal and the guitar, and a complete control over what he is doing then I just dont know what to say to you. I'll stay in the large camp of fans of Landau's and do it happily.

@Howenow1 "I'm 50 years old, have heard every guitar player worth listening to" Wow. that makes me so sad to hear. Just listen to that statement. And coming from a 50 year old man. I'm 24 and even I know that all you need to appreciate any sort of music genre, be it metal or jazz, is an open mind. In an honesty, I agree with Holdsworthy. You're not ready yet. That's why it sounds as if he's "making it up as he goes along". Because you don't understand what's going on. You will though, in time :)

@Holdsworthy; Why should I be upset? I'm 50 years old, have heard every guitar player worth listening to. I know enough to know when a player isn't making a connection with me. I'm not easily bored, but Landau manages it, every time I've given him the time. Maybe I'll be "ready" when I'm 80, and WANT music that puts me to sleep.

You guys are right about one thing: I'm "not ready" to be bored by Michael Landau. If he's really that good, he doesn't need little KZbin minions defending him at every turn. If YOU have an open mind, why can't you accept that I don't dig your hero? Don't take it personally; unless, of course, you have nothing else in your life to divert you.

Nah, it's Michael's playing. Whether it's his Dumble, various 'blackface' Fender combos, his old C.A.E. OD-100, or his Suhr ML-100 running through his Kerry Wright 4X12 cab...he always sounds great. A Dumble can only do so much. It can either help you achieve the tones that you want, or it can be brutally unforgiving and magnify everything that sucks about one's playing. Henry Kaiser is a great example of the latter.

No - actually Landau practiced and applied himself. Then he went and made a career, dealing with all the uncertainties of the trade, and learned from all of it, playing countless gigs and countless styles. So now - to his credit - he is very, very good. Let's just give credit where it's due, shall we?

That's my experience of Gary Novak. Great player, chops coming out his ears, but he tries to drive the bus all the time instead of listening. Someone like Kevin Hayes doesn't take off the second you step on a pedal. He gives you dynamic space to develop things and supports the build instead of dragging everyone along on his trip.

"Discussion" frequently--for mature people--involves points of view that are different than the ones we hold personally. You were happy to hit me with your condescending comments about how I "wasn't ready", but it seems your own skin is a bit thin. Why would my opinion diminish your ability to enjoy "some great music"? Grow up.
