For triple types, just make it a held item, that adds a type, and recolor the pokemon/ have a text announce it like "Charizard is charged with a dragon aura". So charizard + dragon stone = Fire / Flying / Dragon With the obvious downside of not having an item anymore, which is quite huge, making it balanced imo. Especially if you limit to once per team, as always

I think giving type changed Pokémon a special aura that reflects their new type could make it so that every Pokémon could change types while minimizing the different designs Gamefreak has to implement. Then Gamefreak could pick a few Pokémon to actually change the design for when they change their type, like how every Pokémon can dynamax but only a few hand-selected Pokémon have Gigantimax forms.

I also think a temporary third type makes more sense than changing types. Wolfey already confirmed that a third type would be OP in pretty much every scenario. It's much more flashy and more accessible to casual players as a clear power-up. An aura might be a little underwhelming compared to, say, glowy lines on the pokemon's body and eyes indicating the new type. That would look rad.

I could see a visual implementation of type changes being done via particle effects. You get a flashy, type-themed cutscene and then your Pokémon has an aura (similar to the magenta glow on Dynamaxed Pokémon) accompanied by some additional visual flair fit for the type in question. So for example if you change to Electric, the mon's gonna exude yellow light and have bright glowing eyes along with small lightning bolts sparking between it and its surroundings. Fire gets sparks or some kind of heat haze, Grass could get a storm of leaves or petals and so on and so forth.

Actually, if you had a primary and secondary type, it would be pretty easy to set a primary and secondary color. Then, just set a color per type, and change a pokemon's color scheme to fit the type.

Should be a 1-time "Protean", changing the type based on the move you use that turn. Visually speaking, you could just use an "aura" effect of different colors that surrounds the Pokemon.

Yeah I was thinking something like this. If you want to change to your type of choice you have to use a move slot to do so. Aura particle effects seem like a good implementation of the idea. And now type changes are dependent on the move pool of the pokemon. Porygon is like the ultimate example of this, instead you just click the external button and get to use Conversion + your attack of choice.

Surely the best way to implement a mid combat type change that doesn't require a held item would be to have the trainer pre-select a type and then have that type be applicable to any of your pokemon. The trainer can do a dance or sacrifice a goat or something at the beginning of the battle that tells you what type they have saved, so you know what type might potentially crop up. Could add an extra layer to the strategy, like predicting dynamax turn does.

Considering the theme of the games, I'm imagining a possible mechanic could be something like temporarily changing to an ancestral or future version of the Pokemon species. They played with this idea in Legends and the theme of this gen just so happens to be Past/Future.

I love the idea, I envision a set of items that interact with the environment: - Weather coat: Changes type depending on the weather. - All Terrain shoes: Changes type depending on the terrain. - Adaptive Gloves: Changes type depending on the next move used by holder (single use, limited by existing coverage moves). Would be great because these mechanics allow for counter play (changing weather/terrain or predicting the type change based on known learn sets) I don't love the idea of 100% choice of ANY type in the game without set up, but even still could be great.

I’ve had a different idea on “Trained Types”. For certain Pokémon (that see limited play) - they can gain a type when they evolve in certain places while training a certain way. When they released Kubfoo I was like “that’s what I’ve wanted!” Pokémon like Tyrogue evolving into one of its evolutions - but you do it in a volcano and it gains the fire type. Fire Punch is already a move. Or evolve it in a thunderstorm and it gains the electric type. It’s similar to form changes but instead of completely new models, they could just change the skins/materials for the models. It could be an extremely simple option to add diversity to old Pokémon who need a bit of love just quick

To obtain Leafeon and Glaceon you NEEDED to level Eevee up near either the Moss Rock, or the Ice Rock. They changed this in Sword&Shit To get Probopass you NEED to level Nosepass up in a location with a strong magnetic field (or thunderstone in Legends Arceus) Similar: To get Mamoswine you level up a Piloswine that knows Ancient Power. It can only learn Ancient Power through Player intervention. Either Breeding (Parents that can Learn Ancient Power are Dunsparce, Kecleon, and Smeargle (Sketch). Or you can go to a move reminder with Piloswine)

I would change Vespiqueen to a Bug dragon in a heartbeat. Dragons have strong connections to hoarding and royalty, which are a part of Vespiqueen and bees (hoarding honey for winter, literally a queen). It even looks somewhat draconic with it’s horns. This would also give it a much needed identity over other bug and the literal other two lines of bee Pokémon.

Call it Quantum Evolution and have work with a Quantum Crystal(or some mcguffin) the trainer has. Click Quantum Evolve and select a one of your four move and that pokemon changes it primary type to that moves type for the remainder of the battle and it can only be used once per battle. It can works on all pokemon, for the vast majority of pokemon it would just be a pallet swap, but Some Key pokemon get a Past or Future form based on that typing. You don't have the issue of any pokemon being any type and because its locked into Moves a pokemon can learn. I can see that fitting in theme games.

I could see the story being like: you pick the fire type, rival picks grass. Middle of the game, they gain the ability to switch their starter to a water type but you don’t. At the end of the game, you finally get the ability to change your Pokémon to fire type to counter them. I think that’d be a cool part of the story!

I have always wanted an ice type that become water when hit with a fire type move.

I can imagine a slow hard hitting high defense ice giant who is being piloted by a small water spirit or small sea creature. When hit by a fire type move the ice giant would melt, shrinking the size of the giant and exposing the pilot. This shrink in size would lowering its defense and attack but greatly buff its speed. In some cases this would make switching your ice type into a fire move a plausible option. What a banger Idea Cade! There is so much that can de done with that concept!

I would give gallade (my favorite Pokémon) the fairy type. I’ve always felt that Gallade especially mega gallade should have the fairy type, and since gardevoir got it, why not gallade? Aditionally, the fairy type would help gallade a lot, and it works well with the fighting type in general, 4x resistance to dark moves + justified ability, super effective stab for steel, etc.

My guess for the generational gimmick is "reverse forms". Basically, some pokemon would have acces to a new form where their types change to the "opposite" types, so for Charizard for example, the reverse form could be water/ground type because water would be the opposite (or reverse) of fire type and ground type would be the opposite of flying type

My friend and I were talking about the lore of the game and he made an interesting point about the new mechanic. It will probably revolve around the idea of future and past like the legendaries. I think this works well with your idea of type changes, it'll be like we're able to turn back or turn forward time to see a different regional variant but instead it will be like we're seeing a time variant. This also works with Legends: Arceus and how those pokemon were changed to be different in the past.

Considering Legends Arceus showed regional variants of the past I could see there being like a “Time Machine” held item that could make a Pokémon become a historic version of itself, or a futuristic version depending on the typing you’d want.

I wish Pokémon made something similiar to the gems in gen 5, where activating a move of the same typing as the typing-changing item can trigger the one use item and make the certain Pokémon a different type for one battle. It isn’t a permanent thing, so it wears off after battle.

I want to see something more thematic with this game. We already know there is a theme with past/future. I think having select pokemon have a "primal" or "future" form using a held time stone (or whatever you want to call it) could be cool depending on how it's done. It could feel like a reskinned mega if done poorly but there is potential there as long as it ties back into the story in some interesting way.

I honestly hope they'll let us change/customize types AND abilities in the future. Like how we can hyper train to simulate perfect IVs. It would shake things up for the better in my opinion. I'd love to change Eternatus into a Dragon/Steel type and give it the Levitate ability.
