Already did. That's why we know that it contains a lot for wolfe to see. To maybe understand anything in this. This video too was more about wolfe being wtf;d than about the run, so it's cool to do this, not stealing the content but adding to it without making the other video redundant. Summoning salt has a lot of content that would interest the same audience as pokemon competitive, so he'd benefit from the visibility the world champion of the different kind would bring. I'll stop before this turns into a rant. Kinda did already. Sorry..

Also the game boy color and GB player/advance allow you to perform a sequence of inputs at the title screen that result in different colors. It happens to be a part of the commands for that specific manip. So if you have Red you can change the color to Blue and vice versa. The most interesting one is UP+B which has a dull sequoia tone. In a well lit area, you can actually use that tone to see in Rock Tunnel. Exarion was the first to use that trick in a speedrun. Pretty neat

Gen 1 has to be one of my favorite generations, not for the nostalgia but because of how broken everything is. Poison and Bug are strong against eachother, Psychic is immune to Ghost, Special was one stat, there's a 1/256 chance of missing a 100% accurate move, Dig and EQ did the same amount of damage, RNG manipulation is ridiculous, *Wrap,* Dragon Rage is the only Dragon type move but deals a set amount of damage making it pointless, Explosion halves the opponent's defense, lots of Pokemon have really weird coverage such as Water Gun and Bubble Beam, Bike guy making text instant, I could go on for a good while. Edit: oh yeah, how could I forget Focus Energy reducing your chance of landing a Crit by 75%? That's one of the basic ones.

Potion in Viridian was one of those hidden items that, in future games, would normally only be on empty/grassless tiles. Gen 1 “super effective” text is wrong fairly often, I’m not sure what happened with the leech life at @6:00 but it can also happen when a dual-type pokemon is hit by a move that it resists with one type but is weak to with the other typing (e.g. Venusaur getting hit by a ground type move will show “It’s super effective!” when, as we know, it is not) Critical hits, for those who don’t know, are derived from the speed stat in Gen 1 - that’s why Nido has a ~1/6 chance to crit. Also, something that isn’t mentioned in this is the badge boost glitch. Some of the gym badges you get also give you a (12.5%?) boost to a particular stat. Due to a coding error though, whenever you boost any of your stats (this excludes accuracy), you add those badge boosts again multiplicatively. So the X Speeds/X Specials etc. boost the other 3 stats as well, just to a lesser degree.
@lemmy27764 жыл бұрын

"The crazy thing is he probably could have been about a minute, minute and a half faster" Honestly I'd be really curious to see the fastest time per split. There are so many rng things that can kill or save a run that the world record is still so far from perfect even if every button input is optimal. That's what makes this such an interesting speed run to me. The game is so RNG based that the world record isn't won or lost by milliseconds. You can get totally derailed by hitting yourself in confusion and still come back

You can sort of, it’s called TASBot (Tool Assisted Speedrun... Bot lol). I can’t remember off of the top of my head if there’s a Glitchless run on the books, mainly because the bot can operate at speeds higher than human capacity, but there are plenty of No Save Corruption runs that demo how broken Gen 1 truly is.

9:00 That’s amazing that you’ve got so into the game that you can psychically intuit crits. I 100% believe you and know that it’s true. It’s so amazing. You can either believe me or not but I tell you that there are intelligences behind the seemingly random events in our lives; and this must extend to mathematical probability too.. because not knowing any better we think that there’s a x/y chance of a crit happening and that it’s determined by sub-atomic particles firing off randomly inside the game-chip. But you are testiment to the intelligences behind these probabilities, because you actually have an intuitive psychic connection with them, which has developed in you over your time with the game. Amazing.

Reminder that there tends to be a distinct difference between "glitch" and "exploit" that's usually divided around developer intent and severity of things breaking. Hence why things like using Pokedoll to skip Cubone's mom is allowed in this category, but Trainer-Fly isn't. Also, if nobody mentioned it in chat while recording: "Any%" means there's no real restrictions progress-wise. Some games can have 100% or Low% categories, and Any% is an extension of that, used for basically every game as shorthand for "anything goes".

hi, I'm a (not very good) red runner; my PB is 2:07:06 because I suck at menuing and haven't landed moon manip yet. running commentary: nice catch on the growl fail. basically if you don't x acc, every move in gen 1 has a 1/256 chance to miss, which can happen at the worst goddamn times but also at hilarious times like when koga selfdestructs weezing he did NOT RNG manip on route 1, that was pure luck he's not blocking the rival's path, that's where the rival stops anyway, but by moving beside oak, he scrolls the screen up so gary doesn't walk as far the nidoran catch is rng manipped by the save/reset, walk path, and seven a presses; it's also guaranteed to have perfect DVs of FFEF in hex (15, 15, 14, 15 on a 0-15 scale) that potion is always there, the bug catcher even hints at it by saying he dropped it. there's other invis items you see in underground path and other places that you're supposed to find with itemfinder, which you get for having 30 species in your dex in a normal run. saving works because the game starts from the same RNG state every time, so as long as your inputs are the same at every point the game checks for inputs (which is not every frame), you're gold. you don't press B while walking, just A. there's 7 for the nido manip and like 30 for mount moon,, also one or two for the surge trash cans manip later moon rocket is super deadly when you go into it as nidoran; there's a beginner strat that fights a lass and a wild bird on route 3 to get an extra level, so you can rare candy and moon stone evolve to nidoking before that, but it's a bit slower he almost escape roped instead of moon stone-ing, which I've seen happen you go back to pallet it's very sad psychic is only immune to lick; the only other ghost moves are night shade (fixed damage, immunity/weakness/resistance don't apply) and confuse ray (no damage) starmie does not have psychic but it does have bubblebeam which can crit and kill from that hp, or misty can X defend and nidoking gets 3-turn thrash and gets confused, that fight is awful when he talks about "surge world record" he doesn't mean the world record's time to surge, he means the best time to surge anyone's ever gotten I love the SS anne cutscene because I frequently get to that point *really* needing to use the bathroom and by doing it there I lose less time the game saves by the time you can see the word "saving..." so you don't actually have to wait, it just makes you wait before saying you saved because they may not have had the hardware specs when coding it idk I think modern strats is to mega punch the first mon on the route 9 trainer, and then thrash, but if you're low on mega punches you can just thrash and pray for four-turn thrash or to hit through confusion, it's the same odds either way; this is why she's known as four turn thrash girl vine whip is good from bulbasaur because stun spore and other moves are bad yes, rock slide can miss, it's 90% to hit which is why tower is all we use it for he had in fact been to lavender, he didn't stop there but he walked through it going from rock tunnel to celadon horn drill has a speed check, not a level check, in gen 1 in emu, and newer game boys, you can actually see the invisible walls as little gaps in the lines in koga's gym yeah boom strats blow everyone's mind, what's especially hilarious is when selfdestruct misses because 1/256 chance yeah menu speed is huge that's like ten minutes of my run that I lose to pokeguy; he mostly buffers the inputs to do it frame-perfectly and I haven't learned those tricks yet you do not usually lose the run to tangela because tangela sucks lol you don't get ko'd by growlithe because "good ai" means it only uses super effective moves if it can, which in growlithe's case, means agility because psychic beats poison; this is also useful on the lance fight yeah just the red HP strat from koga to lorelei saves two minutes lmao there's no voltorb flip in game corner, just slots, we skip it by pokedolling marowak in pokemon tower Blizzard against agatha's golbat is in fact not 100% accurate, and it knows haze, that's why you normally heal for agatha, unless you need to yolo it for WR pace. that plus the other attacks from second gengar yes, they can crit there, gyarados can crit too and that's a death even from full health so we just hope it doesn't happen; same with pidgeot sky attack I think if you give it two turns? yeah x speed because as I said earlier, horn drill is speed based not level based it's hard to mess up on the hall of fame split, but I did see someone earthquake gary's aerodactyl once by mistake when doing no-PP-up strats, instead of using blizz or thunderbolt (either kills it there); it killed them. that was very sad

I'm not an expert of r/b speedrun but I've been coding some games for the original Gameboy and investigated things like rng. I think I can explain why the saving before entering wild areas. So shockingly computers are terrible at "randomness", there's algorithms that given a number they can generate another that's seamingly random aswell, usually you can just use the generated number as an input to generate the next number, but as you may see you would still need a somewhat random number as your first number to start the chain, and since the machine cannot come up with a random number on its own the norm is to source the random number from OUTSIDE the machine, the best practice is to just use the global time as the seed, but because the og Gameboy doesn't have a way to count time the only way the machine has to get a value outside itself, as we've said before this is the only truly random source, is to get the button inputs from the player. So if you save and quit the game and then restart you break the random chain, so then you can start pressing the precise button sequence to get the random values you want

For better understanding of rng manipulation with very basic terms that apply to any game. RNG first of all is never truly random computer do not have the ability to truly give you a random number. Instead they are given a very advanced function that will produce a pseudo random number. Games will then use variables that are hard to control to make it so the player cant or will have a hard time influencing the rng. One common example in modern games is as soon as you boot up the game theyll use the current system time as a seed for random number generation. Older games like pokemon red/blue don't have clocks in their systems so they use methods like number of frames since the game has been on or every input since the game has turned on. Its important to note in every game the exact moment you lose rng manipulation its impossible to get it back without resetting the rng seed. Because of this whenever he save and restarts the game its specifically because that will completely reset the rng seed allowing him to manipulate it again. For more pokemon gen 1 specific example with pokemon red its not just possible to rng manip when you get encounters but what those encounters are using the knowledge that pokemon red/blue uses a DSUM as an rng generation method for encounters for more information on how encounters are manipulated in gen 1 heres a link to an in depth explanation on DSUMs in pokemon wiki.pokemonspeedruns.com/index.php/Pok%C3%A9mon_Red/Blue/Yellow_DSum_Manipulation

WOLFE NEEDS TO DO HIS OWN SPEEDRUN

Wolfe is great competitively, but he’s completely out of the loop on the actual game sometimes

Yeah, his first game was gen 3

I find it funny that nearly every world record speed run I've watched the runner says "this is a shit run I did so bad" or "dead run I should just reset" It's a really bizarre thing that happens more then you'd think lol

gen 1 AI oh a poison type I should use a super effective move. Uses rest.
@christophermoon21362 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it used a super effective move for everything, which was just stupid.

As someone who deep dived pretty hard into exactly how dumb and broken gen 1 is, it's always fun to watch really good and experienced pokemon players learn about all that stuff. You should do a tour of gen 1 movesets some day, they're... stupid. Aerodactyl can't learn a rock type move at all, and the only non-normal type move the sandslash line learns through level up is poison sting. It's nuts.

If you ever want to check out more speed runs 4thgengamer is an awesome guy and does some really cool runs with ORAS.

Pretty sure alternating A and B is optimal mashing if you're really good, since you can press a button every frame rather than every other one. Not that people sustain frame-perfect mashing for long, but optimal is optimal.

This was the any% glitchless world record. You should follow up by watching the glitched world record! Don't worry, it's a much shorter video.

Fyi, he was using X Speeds (in part) because in Gen 1, Horn Drill is tied to Speed, not Level (Meaning if they're faster, it can't hit at all).

Day 2 of asking for Why Poulteageist is a threat. Reason: after a shell smash and being beat up to activate weakness policy and weak armor, it can deal massive damage with 300 base power stored power and a massive base 134 special attack. it is obviously easily countered, but if you get it off, well I'll let this calc speak for itself: +4 252+ SpA Polteageist Stored Power (300 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Dusclops: 658-775 (231.6 - 272.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO additionally, it can baton pass into another stored sweeper holding white herb, and switch/allow the beat up user to feint into a follow me user such as a togetic (purely for bulk)

someone who knows less about RNG and speed running than me. but he’s also a world champ so it means nothing. edit: to add to your comments, it was not only planned in advance, it has been painstakingly built upon for years and years. every new leap brings a new challenge to perfect the game of inches. i don’t even speed run but gen 1 pokemon speedrunning has some crazy heritage.
