The Gith are definitely a scary species to go against. We've already seen how fierce they are in the Early Access of the game. More interactions with them later on in the game should prove to be quite eye-opening I think. Something tells me we're going to get manhandled a lot. 😅

The creator of Faerun and The Forgotten realms specifically said that there are no incorrect pronunciations. If you "Misprunounce" something - there is probably a place within the realms that pronounces it that way. There is no right or wrong way to say Selune, Zhentarim or any other organization, Deity, group or even individual names (Unless said individual corrects you).

That being said, if you wanted to go with the game pronunciation in this series, you failed :D

I feel like it should be this way in the real world as well. My wife, a PhD in Linguistics, really broke my obsession with "proper" language and pronunciation. Realistically, the whole point of communicating is just to exchange information. As long as you have understood each other's words, the exchange has been "correct".

I very much look forward to seeing how much of the Githyanki story is told / expanded upon in BG3. While my first instinct would be to hope for "a lot" I suspect I may be disappointed if I start thinking about travelling to their Astral Plane home to overthrow Vlaakith, or solve the mystery of Gith and Tiamat... Something for a future expansion perhaps? That said we're almost certain to get some kind of window into their story through Laezal, the creches (at least one of which it seems we'll be able to visit) and the mysterious artifact of Githyanki origin. This game is touching on so many really big and exciting things (Githyanki, Illithids, Netheril, Avernus, the Zhentarim, certain Liches, the Underdark, the Dead Three) that unfortunately we know they can't go too deep into each of them without the game being excessively long and ending up with level 20 characters. Most of all, though, I'd love to have the option for a more psionic character development beyond the fixed selection of Githyanki powers. Even something for a recruitable NPC would be nice - a Gish or an Illithid perhaps, I'm not picky...

Like putting it in Character Creation? That'd be cool to have incompatible characters that clash with one another. Perhaps an option with the Paladin seeing the hag for what she really is early on? Roll a charisma check to reveal who she is, followed by a strength check to cut off her head before she transforms.
@orarinnsnorrason4614 Жыл бұрын
In BG2 there was a sword you could get from the Gith. If you put together the sword and hilt it would become Vorpal Sword. Its special ability is it has (if I remember) 10% chance of decapitating enemies, killing them outright. I wonder if this powerful item asosiated with Gith will make a return in BG3.
@redelephantsdotnl Жыл бұрын
Thing is though, in lore - that sword isn't unique. There are lots of those around. There probably is one, considering your Githyanki already has lines claiming she wants one, an the Githyanki play a fairly big role. But not necessarily the one that made Minsc almost decent.
@orarinnsnorrason4614 Жыл бұрын
@@redelephantsdotnl I rarely used this blade. I mostly used the talking sword. coz it gives you immunity to fear (or charm). which is the perfect thing against the mindflayers
@zomenis Жыл бұрын
@@redelephantsdotnlLae'zel talks about wanting to wield a silver sword, not a vorpal sword. Huge difference as silver swords are presented to the Githyanki as soon as they become knights/kill an Illithid. It's moreso a rite of passage than anything else
@redelephantsdotnl Жыл бұрын
@@zomenis I'm aware of the distinction, but that *still* makes it a non-unique item. Also, if the thing has the same name in BG2, it would be called 'Silver Sword'. Now, there is a bit of a discrepancy between the BG2 sword and 5E Githyanki swords - as 5E Githyanki swords aren't vorpal, they have a chance to cut one's Astral Cord; and the better version increasing tharrt chance. Admittedly, that is something that has never come up in any of my campaigns and I'm by no means an expert; but I suspect that'd do more or less the same to any regeular joe on the prime material plane, ie. Killing them. Now I'm not sure about AD&D Astral travel *either*, but in bg2 that's not a core mechanic at all, it would've been pointless to put that on the sword.

So my fav game (storywise) is another D&D based game that just beat BG1. Planescape:Torment. It featured a companion Darkon (Follower of Zerthimon) who was a Githzerai and in 2000 i was infatuated with these races. A little extra Lore for the Bards.. "The githyanki have been a fixture in Dungeons & Dragons ever since they showed up in the original Fiend Folio in 1981. Like drow, githyanki had mixed parties of different characters, featuring both front-line warriors and support casters. One of the specialized githyanki types was the gish, who was essentially a multi-class spellcaster (fighter/mage or thief/mage; githyanki do not have clerics). Over time, D&D fans picked up the term and started using it to refer to fighter/mage characters in general, especially if they actually fight in melee." Gish, by the way, is the Gith word for "Skilled". To play a Gish was a major thing in early D&D that affected many subclasses later on in newer TTRPGs/gaming.

I listen to a D&D actual play podcast that ended up having mindflayers and gith as major antagonists and I learned the origin of githyanki. Ever since then I have been convinced they are incredibly cool. I don't know if I want to play one (I'd definitely play a githzerai if the opportunity arose) but I don't know if BG3 has really sold how awesome they are yet. Like, with their history I can kind of get why they're so convinced of their own superiority. Githzerai are more like monks compared to the Githyanki's more militaristic lifestyle.
