My first ship was a Gearing class Fram 1. USS Sarsfield DD837. I was a Sonarman, so, I found the ASW feature fascinating. They had done away with the helicopter drone by then.

A friend's grandfather served on a Gearings, USS Myles C. Fox, in the late 1960s as an ASROC crewman. Very cool to see her in action. I asked before because we rarely see a '60s era Cold War gone hot in fiction, it's the '80s that is normally depicted in fiction. Amazing to see so many early post war designs modernized like these were. If you love the Gearings, we have one preserved in Fall River MA at the Battleship Cove Museum. Less then an hour outside Boston. USS Joseph P. Kennedy

@@patchouliknowledge4455 what's matter? With the post war accuracy of fire, you just needs a single salvo to disable an entire ship. Those American battlecruisers was really impressive in firepower, accuracy, operational capabilities and reliability. And after all, also the Des Moines was a post-war heavy cruiser. But not of the weight of the Alaska. But yeah I can understand that if you have to hunt submarines then big ships could be a trouble for possible counterfire so... Why not a post-war light cruiser like the Worcester? Or a Seattle?

Fun to see some strategy with multiple types of enemy vessels, not just firing a bunch of missiles back-n-forth. I still laugh at that one episode where you surfaced the sub, fired a missile & took out the annoying enemy helicopter to finally complete the mission.

I'm with you, there's something cool about ships that were built in WWII and continuously modernized. Many German U-boats were modernized and used by several nations for decades too, and as you well know, several "modern" diesel electrics were basically just tweaked U-boat designs built from scratch.

Served as an ASROC captain for many years, and have to say there are at least two details on this simulator that make it inaccurate: The launcher has 4 pairs of cells (8 cells total) that elevate individually, and are secured horizontally when not being elevated. Not at an angle like they show in the graphics. Surprisingly enough, i have also seen static plastic models of destroyers with a launcher looking like that! The launcher couldn't fire as-is in the video, or else would have hit infrastructure. The torpedo would disengage from the booster at a calculated distance, and open the chute seconds afterwards. Looks like the torpedo dropped very slow, even without the chute open. The DASH (Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter) was the ancestor of ASROC, and i can't recall a ship carrying both at the same time.
