I've seen a photo of one of those out of the water. It had torpedo tubes. Back in 1985 I went deep sea fishing with my dad, out of Port Canaveral. On the way out of port we saw a US sub partially surfaced. I had no idea what kind of boat it was, but aft of the tower looked flat for most of its length. Dad overheard something on the fishing boat's radio about a "fishing trawler", then about ten minutes later a couple jets flew over the area, apparently going to encourage the trawler to go elsewhere.

I love those LSTs, such cool ships. The Navy wanted *fast* LSTs, but the usual way of building an LST with large doors on the bow for rapid disembarkation of loaded vehicles and supplies was very limited due to the overall lack of structure in that arrangement. They got around this with that derrick structure that extended well over the bow, they could run out a ramp for vehicles to run down, this left them with a fixed bow and the ability to hit over 20 knots without fear of damaging themselves
@deekamikazeАй бұрын
I understand the physics but it's still crazy to me how a "Fast" boat just goes the speed of a moped. I'm not super familiar with ships but I wonder if a nuclear powered jet boat is possible for these large ships and why they haven't done it for speed. It's probably extremely loud and a lot of factors for broken parts and maybe it just wouldn't work because of the way that a nuclear powered boat uses steam. But it would be cool unlike those LCS that are now being scrapped after just a few years in the water.
@sirknightowl2306Ай бұрын
@@deekamikaze TL;DR: a ship big enough for nuclear propulsion to be worth it would be too big for waterjet propulsion to be worthwhile. The laws of physics say it just couldn't get that fast. One of the (many) problems with those LCSs is their waterjet propulsion and the obsession with speed in their design specs. Waterjet propulsion is mechanically a lot more complicated than traditional propellers and therefore a lot more prone to malfunction, among other downsides. They got the waterjets anyway because they were the only realistic way to get the speeds they wanted, even though really the LCSs could have fulfilled their designed roles just fine if they gave up a little of that speed for propulsion that doesn't throw a fit if you look at it wrong. The LCSs have other problems too. As far as "fast" ships being actually pretty slow compared to a lot of land vehicles, it's primarily down to two things: mass and drag. Even "small" ships are massive by the standards of land vehicles, and the more mass something has, the more oomph you need to make it go faster- that's just Newton's 2nd law. Ships, being bigger, pack larger and more powerful engines than land vehicles, but (1) bigger engine = more mass and (2) devoting more space to engines means less space you can use for other things that are presumably the purpose of the ship, like weapons in the case of a warship. Then there's the matter of drag. For one thing, water opposes things moving through it a lot more than air does. For another, the faster you go, the more the water (or air, the same concept applies to air just weaker) pushes back against you, so the harder you have to push to get that little bit more speed. Both the mass and the drag factors mean ships hit diminishing returns on power for speed a lot sooner than land vehicles.

Missouris Missile Compliment really shined in this one Her Anti-ship and Anti-surface capabilities are hard to compete with for the time, her and her sisters Sadly their Anti-air for their 1980s situation was less then Ideal, though 4 Phalanx is nothing to scoff at in reality Chaf, jamming tech and CIWS as her counters, which all combined could defend her well She had Torpedo Counters in the form of her Towed Decoy, plus her built in torpedo defenses likely were still decent for the Era

@_.Glennicus._Ай бұрын
@@donniemontoya9300 indeed The Iowa's, as much as the US Navy may hate to admit it, had Shore Support down for capability . They did begin developing Discarding Sabot Rounds for the Iowa's, yet shelved it due to the Iowa Turret Explosion, and the ships being decommissioned So the US Navy had a design being developed to increase the guns range, possibly up to 100 miles.
@ferallion3546Ай бұрын
For the Cold War she had a heavy CIWS battery. CG, CGN, and DDGs carried only two mounts. BBBG wise she had a lot of capability. The battle theory at the time did not have enough CIWS guns mounted aboard. Considering what we knew about Soviet mass salvo ASM & ship launched cruise missiles, plus the very long reload times of Phalanx drum mags, it’s surprising how light their close in defense capabilities were back then. Realistically though, if you’re down to short range missiles & dual purpose guns in a CIWS mode along with your phalanx CIWS, things have gone VERY sideways. Personally I always thought that ships, including our current Flight updates need more intermediate and point blank range CIWS defenses. Thank fully we haven’t had to relearn the lessons from WWII with their AA defense increases during the war.

@@ferallion3546 I'm sure such lessons will be relearned soon enough As you may have stated The more recent Arleigh rely almost solely on 1 CIWS positioned Aft Their Anti-air missiles being their main defense, if they were loaded with them for the mission Ultimately for Air Defense close range I'd rather be aboard an Iowa No matter how bad it may be, the 5 inch 38s, chaf, and CIWS is more comforting for close range then Chaf, 1 5 inch mark 45 and a single CIWS mount

And that skirmish let to an intelligence goldmine. A few days after that battle over Unalaska, a PBY on routine patrol happened by chance to spot a downed plane in the soft, marshy soil of neighboring Akutan Island. When they Americans investigated, they couldn’t believe what they’d found. The mystery plane was a virtually undamaged Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero, a fighter never before touched by Allied hands. The aircraft, dubbed the “Akutan Zero” was recovered and shipped to San Diego where she was rebuilt, repainted in US marking, and thoroughly flight tested. From her tests, we learned all the strengths and weaknesses of Japan’s best fighter, and that data was then passed to aircraft designers, who, now knowing exactly what they had to surpass, created new fighters that could beat the Zero. Tactics born from those tests were then passed to the pilots of the fleet, who would use them and the new advanced fighters they now had at their disposal to take back control over the skies of the Pacific…
