I have a headcanon where I think that Philza was as powerful a warrior as Technoblade or Dream in his prime, but he was deemed weak as time went on for his classical and strange ways of fighting. After having Techno, Wilbur and Tommy he taught everything he knew to his sons and only one of them actually learned something and was interested in the ways of the warrior. And so Techno trained in Phil's ways but he added his own modifications along the way, which made him the fearful, merciless blood god we know and praise today. This doesn't mean that Phil can't fight or he is too old, it's just that he is a classical warrior, who was as powerful as his son Techno today during his prime. Maybe that is why since he doesn't fight as much anymore he just tamed a bunch of crows and understood what they want to say because he felt lonely, that is why we can call him the Crow Father.
