As a Spaniard, I can tell you that you can have breakfast absolutely everywhere (even in the smallest town) and it's actually pretty common for us to have it outside. However, our idea of breakfast is different from the American one, since we basically eat just a toast (with olive oil, tomato, tuna, jamón, butter and jam, etc.) or a pastry and a coffee (orange juice is common too).

We are going to Spain for the first time. I want to see where my great grandparents lived but I'm worrying about the protests regarding tourists go home. We have a motorhome and will be staying in a campsite for two weeks. Is it really that bad? We are a respectful family who want to learn the culture, visit the monuments, learn the history and generally have a nice time. I get that Spain has a lot of tourists to the point native Spaniards can't afford to live in homes because long term renting and air bnb have priced their accommodations expensively for tourists but the locals cannot afford them but what about tourists that are coming and have their own accommodation like a motorhome or stay in hotels. Most are travelling through Spain and we do go back home. We spend money which helps with the country's economy so we only take back home good memories whilst learning about the culture etc... Are Spaniards angry with those who come for a week or two or at those who live in Spain? I'm just trying to understand what is the real issue.

@@isuggsy The fact that you've noticed those problems and are conscious about them already shows that you're pretty respectful to begin with. Yes, those problems exist, and yes, there have been protests and some of them have gone a bit overboard. However, I think you'll find that most Spaniards don't have any problems with the average tourist. The ones we do have problems with are the ones who come here to get wasted, behave rudely, and act like the place is theirs. That's who the "tourists go home" signs are addressed to. For the most part, we appreciate it when people come with an honest interest in our country. Also, while there is a big problem in housing, most people have never thought of putting the blame on tourists themselves. It's the landlords and other bussiness owners who have willingly (and sometimes illegally) priced the locals out.

Almost accurate, the reason food is not served fast is: because it is not fast food (Fast food restaurants are as fast as other country ones). As you said, if you are in a hurry you can ask for "fast food" as slices, salads, or cold soups, but almost every good meal is made or finished for you, and it takes time. That is why, you usually order some "entrantes" appetizers, and drinks, to make time until the main dishes come to the table. Also, we (I am Spanish) enjoy the table time, there is no rush when you are enjoying that time with jokes, and good conversation, it is an important part of our quality family and friends time and even business time.

@@ofdrumsandchordswe have cider, yes, especilly in the Nord. You will find good flavored ciders in Galicia, and also champagne style ciders both in Galicia and Asturias. But Asturias is the nest of Spanish cider, although you will find that we consume Asturian cider totally different than any other one in the world (at least, that I'm aware of). To taste it, first of all, organize an 'espicha' by grabbing a bunch of friends or family. Then get one special cider glass (only one). Those are big (more than 500 mls), straight and very very very fine, the finest and slimmer the glass, the better the cider will taste (you will get the sensation that if you push very hard the glass, it will break in your hand, those are the better). Then, grab some cider bottles (at least a box of 6). Someone in the group (preferably with good pulse) should take the glass in their left hand, the bottle in the right one, and 'escanciará' the cider, sending it over their head inside of the glass that will be the lower your arm allows you to, to 'break' it. You will serve a 'culin' (a 'little ass' 😂, around 1 cm of the glass), and you will give the glass to one person in the group, that will take it with one gulp except a little, that will be used to clean the glass and be discharged on the ground. And then repeat with the same glass with every member of the group (including yourself) until you finish the box of bottles... Or a couple or three of them... The fun and laughs are guaranteed, but remember that getting drunk is no fun at all in a espicha 😂😂😂 In Asturian bares the waiter 'escanciará' the cider for you if you don't want or dare to do it. But drinking cider is always a social and funny act, don't ask for it if you are alone, or the waiter will look you with pity because he will think you are alone in the world. And you can find Asturian type 'sidrerías' (cider bars) in other areas of Spain too, especially in the Nord of the country. Very funny. Asturian cider is pure fermented natural Apple juice. No aditives and flavours. Pretty strong and acidic. Very good.

Any normal cafetería will have it, some bakeries too. It's posible that they dont have it in a menu or an adversetement outside, If you aren't sure just ask. Also, the shops close from 14 to 16 so people can go home cook, eat and come back, not for siesta. So please, that's a huge steriotipe. If you are in a hurry, we have McDonald's too. Good food takes time to be prepare. The are take aways too here. But eating as a local IS part of the experience. Also, wach what you say, because most people, specialy under 40 can understand you.

Just came back from Spain a few days ago. An orange was on the ground in Merida. My wife picked it up and was about to eat it. But we checked the internet and said, bad idea. LOL. I think you were generous about sangria, it seem like sangria is held in lower regard by Spaniards (maybe I'm wrong). Potato chips awesome! Didn't care for the bread, and it is never free. Agree pre-book anything unless you want to line up for an hour, and who knows you still might miss the attraction. My wife and I both speak fluent Spanish, if we didn't speak a word of Spanish it doesn't seem like it would have been a problem anywhere (Barcelona, Sevilla, Madrid, Granada, Cordoba, Toledo, Segovia and Merida). I think Spain is very reasonably priced, 100%. My only exception are the sites. All of them charge for the most part and not particularly cheap. That said some of the most amazing places to visit. Nice dinners with multiple drinks for two, well under $100 (that doesn't happen in Los Angeles). Very good information. Watched your other videos and they were very helpful. Thank you! Spain is a wonderful country, IMO should be in the top 3 of must visits in Europe.

I walked the Camino de Santiago in 2016, and your video reminded me of a couple of things: 1. They’re going to speak their language whether you understand them or not. I remember a driver speaking to me about Madrid, and I had no idea what he was saying. But I could hear the pride in his voice. 2. The pilgrim menu was simple and good. I had no problem with it. But I never got into octopus. 3. The locals tolerated the pilgrims, but I think they got tired of hearing “Buen Camino” every thirty seconds. I just smiled and kept walking. 4. At one albergue, this guy kept complaining about the food saying it didn’t really reflect Spanish culture. And he was from Spain. I loved Spain!

Hi! Regarding your comments 2 and 4, I guess you got a pilgrim menu that normally is a low budget menu to have on your way, and that is why it did not include octopus (as it is a quite expensive food) and your spanish companion complained about its quality.

For me, as a Spaniard, it's WONDERFUL hearing you. I agree with you 100% In what you say. It's important to be careful when choosing a restaurant to taste the paella or any amazing spanish typical dish, because I wouldn't like if you fell in a "for tourists" restaurant and went back home with the wrong idea of how spanish food is. Just some little things 😉: - for the waiting time to be served, that depends on the place and the moment, of course, but even for us, people from the centre, it's unbearable when we travel to the south too, because people live at a different pace of time there. ☺ - people who pretend to "give" you things in the street are a nightmare for us, too. You're right, the best thing to do is not to stop and keep walking. I love how respecful you speak about my country (I can see you're having a great time here 👍☺) and we would love every tourist who come to Spain were as respectful and interested in our culture as you are. Thank you SO much. 😊

On top of that, these street oranges which are sour are used to produce Sevillian/Spanish marmalade which is exquisite with toasts for breakfast.

Hi there, I'm Italian and we have a very similar language with Spanish, one of the difference we have is adios (addio in italian), in Italy addio is impling that you'll never see that person ever again, so it has a very specific use, and 25 years ago, when I arrived in spain i only used "hasta luego" and i needed many years to get used to adios, wich is used very naturally here, if you are not expected back in one hour or during the same day, adios is the correct thing to say😂, i live here 10 year and i guarantee that adios is correct.and common, of course waiters and shop clerks will tell see you later, trying to have you back there

Im spaniard and don't like say "adiós" i prefer "hasta luego" o "chao" because "adiós" also is "good bye forever". "The last good bye".
@joseZirrionJeredia4 ай бұрын
@joseZirrionJeredia4 ай бұрын

As a native Spanish, speaker, ¡I just realised how seldom 'Adiós' is used! On the paella tip, I would take it even further. It's a very hard dish to pull off, so you'll probably be disappointed if you eat it outside the Valencia region. And even there, make sure to avoid tourist traps. Unless you plan to go all night partying, it is surely not eaten at night, but mostly because it is a very filling dish.

As a spaniard, this is very spot on and helpful for tourists. It's also very respectful, and I wanted to thank you for it. I'd like to add that locals are protective of their food, which also happens between regions within Spain, so it's ok if we complain about it but if a foreigner does we become feisty haha. Also, patatas bravas are actually only served with the salsa brava which is the orange and hot sauce. The garlic white one is usually called ali-oli or ajoaceite and is also served separately, but in some places with no bravas culture they serve them mixed. And they are great, don't get me wrong, but actual bravas are the ones with the orange sauce. If you want to try the best ones in Madrid, in my opinion, Las Bravas is right next to Sol, so close it might seem like a tourist trap, but it's actually been there for so long. They are the best I've tried in Madrid, and I've lived here all my life. Of course there are some modern recipes and expensive places that will make great bravas, but these are the original recipe and you can just enjoy them with a cold beer and it's bliss

Hey! Living in Spain for 12 years and I have received a lot of visitors from other countries. ATM related: most of the times you don’t “need” cash in Spain, majority of places you can pay with card. Best way of action is to pay with the card and always choose Euro as payment option. That way you save the ATM fee and the horrid conversion each bank has. Have bit of cash on you just in case and you’ll be fine.

Yep!!! Do not mess with our food. Food in Spain is good in all regions... to the point that if a neighbourg or relative goes on vacation the very first question will be "did you have a good time?" And the second is " was the food any good?" And the important answer is to the second question.... if it is a yes we might consider going, if the answer is no... that place is scratched off the vacay list

We do say "adiós". Some people artificially object to it, it is true, but a lot of others don't. The objectors seem to hold the view that "adiós" is a permanent farewell and feel the need to replace it by "hasta luego", but that is not a hard and fast rule and is definitely not written in any dictionaries. You can say "adiós" and still expect to see the person you are taking leave from after a brief while. "Adiós" can be used for shorter and more permanent farewells, although it is true that "hasta luego" clearly signals the expectation to meet again in a short while. Native speaker here and a language teacher too. Do not believe everything you hear. Even native speakers can be biased and not be totally conscious of the use of a word in the wider community of speakers.

Tip if you are happy with the job done, and never if not.. Any tip is always well recibed, and spanish waiters have a good memory.
@Morwen19783 ай бұрын
It is not that you aprecciate the hard work. Waiters receive a full salary from their bosses, sometimes far over the middle salary, depending on the place, so they do not really need the tip although they'll of course appreciate it. But mostly it goes into a box called 'bote' and after there's some money on it, it is divided between all the employees (and many times, the boss too). It is also not unheard of bosses stealing the bote from the employees, so sometimes it is not such a good detail as you'd think. But a couple of euros for a good meal and service is more than enough, not even close to the 5% said in the video. If the meal and service was VERY good, you can leave something more, but 5€ is usually a good amount. And it is never expected, nor due. You should receive a good service anyway. Of course if you were a nasty customer, or very demanding, if you don't tip they will probably speak bad about you as soon as you leave 😂 but it won't be because the lack of tipping. But I wouldn't advise you to be nasty to the waiters. Remember, they don't NEED to please you, only their boss, and many times you will find that the one you think the waiter, is also the owner, especially in tiny bars and restaurants, and they have the admission right, just saying 😂
