What a disaster zone Wolverhampton has become. It wasn't always like that, and it's thought provoking to see the old arcade I remember from my childhood.

It is fascinating to see the Arcade as remembered from the 60's. What has replaced it is very upsetting.

I remember stomping my feet as i was walking in that beautiful arcade when i was a kid in the sixties. It had a wooden floor.

I used to live here in the 90's (student) always amazed at the place some very impressive buildings and architecture. In parts it looks like a refined west country city/town. Always struck by the hideous shopping centre in the middle of it. Thought that the middle was lost due to bombing in the war. I can't believe it was redeveloped. It is unbelievable. It must of been some something special back in the day. They need to get rid of the Mander centre it does not fit the rest of the town at all.

I well remember that there was a strong campaign to save the Central Arcade but it sadly caught fire one afternoon and the damage was such as to prevent it being rebuilt. Very unfortunate (or should that be convenient!). No one believed it was an accident at the time. I couldn't possibly comment.

Dresden was bombed and they rebuilt the old buildings. I think they could have rebuilt a piddling little arcade if they tried to.

I also hate the way the arcades came down so the Mander Centre could be built. At least Walsall still have a Victorian arcade.

Back before Wolverhampton was a complete ghost town.

Lovely old footage and town - the polar opposite to how it is today. The council have installed hidden cameras watching everything now - you’ve only got to drive down the wrong road at a certain time or park over by 2minutes and you get a fine through the post. It hardly encourages you to re-visit! Well done Wolves council - you’ve helped turn the place into a ghost town!

Who here thinks that the metro extension on pipers row is a waste of time and money.....I mean for petes sake it’s only a bloody 5 minute from the tram stop in front of the police station to the train station plus look at the amount of disruption it’s causing.

I used to love going into Wolves, now it makes me sad. Why on the continent do they keep their old buildings and fit the new ones around them, where as we knock them down to stick crap that looks out of date 25 years later?

It was nicer the way it was. The architecture of the arcade was far superior to the horrible brutalistic style of the Mander Centre. Anyone can see that!!!!!

So two beautiful arcades were destroyed to make way for the ugly shopping centres there now! Stupid council lack of vision and understanding of what people actually like to see around them. They could have been listed and conserved.

It happened everywhere, Town planners want to work from a clean slate which means demolishing everything. I live in Peterborough, 3/4s of the town center was flattened to build a shopping center, but they couldn't destroy the arcade because it was a public right of way, otherwise they'd have loved to. Shopping centers were based on the american malls, which they forgot to mention were generally out of town, but when we started getting them England wasn't as much of a car culture..... so the bigwigs decided to flatten lovely old streets to build them. These people were sometimes well intentioned, but made many many mistakes, that I would class as vandalism.
