@Skatejock214 ай бұрын
I think it was because it was a massive repatriation loan and no care was taken to get international travel insurance and she even said it was a long process. When the US embassy and state dept had to get her out. Its not like you're just sending a helicopter. To go to lengths of going to the white house for permission and you think thats not a big deal. No it wasn't her fault and I am grateful she got taken out. $250,000 is not a small amount and to be the biggest in american history. I would just question the reasoning behind why the state dept isn't pleased. Thats the missing pieces right. Its not necessarily about whether its her fault or not and probably has nothing to do with that. It also meant they had to work with the cambodian government too, it wasn't solely with the USA alone. Basically what she's saying and recognizing is that it wasn't a small feat to get her out. Which means it was a difficult process and again, to go to the white house for permission. Put it into context. It also meant that she or her family had to reach out to the USA to rescue her. The USA didn't have to do anything. They could have just said "well you're in cambodia and didn't get insurance, oh well". As much as americans complain about health insurance, she is very aware that she had none and sadly that part is only on her for not having any.
@Silkytheworm4 ай бұрын
Maybe she just thinks she deserves to have her third degree burns from a freak accident treated, without having to owe $250 000. It's a senseless system, she didn't decide to go through this, why should she be additionally punished with such a steep debt for the rest of her life? @@StardropSmoothie
@Shastasnow4 ай бұрын
@@StardropSmoothie I feel not taking care of her body could be from her trauma. Expecting someone to care about themselves when they feel terrible is a tough ask. A little compassion can go a long way. Also, she was pretty young when this happened. Not applying for or paying for insurance is a bit idiotic when you travel. How her parents let her do that is nuts. Even on a school trip overseas, I bought insurance for the what-if scenarios.

So she was 18, her parents threw away all their possessions, flew to a foreign nation with only backpacks, and didn't aquire any insurances or precautionary plans. Then when their teen daughter was injured and the 3rd world country they impulsively moved to couldn't meet her medical needs, they requested American tax payers foot the bill, effectively destroying multiple opportunities for this young girl. Then they decide to dip and leave her stranded, knowing she'll never be able to follow or visit? Just to make sure I heard that all correctly.

It’s true. She didn’t have travelers health insurance and had no health care coverage. Any insurance isn’t a guarantee of payment, either. People believe that a major disaster could not possibly happen while out of the country, but they do, and the doctors and hospitals in those countries need to be paid. She said that $1,000 is a lot of money to earn in a month… $250,000 is a lot of money to a country with limited funds and she admitted that it was the largest loan in history. The health care bill would have been at least triple that in the United States and she feels bad about the amount she owes, but the government doesn’t probably care much about that. The passport should be the least of her worries, because if she can’t afford to make payments, then how can she afford to travel? That’s food for thought.

I’ve had some awful health issues myself especially over the last few years since 2015. 2016 was the worst with 8 admissions including in December when I was admitted for 29 days with severe sepsis after I nearly died. That year I think I spent about 2 months in the hospital and it’s so hard to be sick and having to be hospitalized so often. I totally understand that aspect of it but to survive the burns she had takes one very strong person. Most would have died most likely and for her to be released 2 months later is amazing and she looks amazing also. If we hadn’t been told about her burns I never would have known. She was really strong to survive that let alone only be admitted for 2 months in the hospital. I wish her the best with her pregnancy!

My big sister was 17 when she got burned after falling into a bonfire. Hers were only 27% of her body 2nd & 3rd° burns. She also didn’t take as good of care of her burns being literally 17, but I swear it’s the attitude you have about them that makes the difference. My sister was always the pretty one & had that confidence & nvr tried to hide them. She never felt like they made her less attractive. I remember being at the pool with her and being mortified bc she was wearing the teenist tiniest bathing suit I’d ever seen irl. (I was at that age where everything embarrassed me.) Like she must have shaved her entire coochie to wear that bathing suit. She was 1 yr post burns with very visible scarring from not just the burns but the grafts, & they didn’t bother her at all. She also didn’t protect them enough with keeping up with her sunscreen, but they look great. Time does wonders for scarring. I’d still recommend ppl take better care of their burns, but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t. The most important thing is not feeling ugly or insecure bc if you’re cool with your scars, other ppl will be too.
