My mother actually did this to me - she chose my ex-husband, who was abusive to me, as her new love interest (while my stepfather is still alive, but disabled and bed-ridden). And she seemed to enjoy giving me cruel treatment with him - i.e., when he (my ex) called me a stupid b**ch, she went and rubbed his back and spoke to him in a soothing voice, as if I was the villain. She was threatening to kick me out of the house (that was purchased with my stepfather's money btw) in the middle of the night, in the middle of the winter, because I was "causing a fight and expressing hate" (i.e., standing up and defending myself against my ex-husband's verbal and emotional abuse). One night, last year in late winter/early spring, when there was still frost outside, I spent a portion of the night in our local (unattended) train station, which had a heated external waiting area shelter (you could turn on the electric heat by pressing a button), thanks to his and her abuse and a scene they caused (he likes to stir up conflict, he is very good at doing it and playing the role of the victim).

Yes, I did - I got out by finding a place to live far away from my mother (and ex-husband), and close to a good friend of mine, who supported me and helped me. He feels almost like family to me now. The reason people fall in love with someone who belongs to their closely related family members has always been strange for me. I have done some research on relationships people have with their family members spouses, for example, relationship with a brother in law and sister in law, son in law. Most of them have the common component of "feeling in control" and "feeling better than someone else". It becomes the person's way of saying: "See, how everyone thought I am not worthy, I am even better than my sister, brother. ....." The main pleasure she is getting from the romance is the concept of "control". It is her way of saying "I can get everything you have. I am better than you", "You couldn't keep this man, see how I can make it work".
