It does matter though, that is why we have statutes of limitations for crimes. It's never an excuse, and people should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, but you cannot treat a person in the same light as if he had done it very little time ago, wasn't repentant of his actions and didn't make any amends to repair the situation, even if it cant be repaired 100%. People can change their ways, and if we don't embrace that as a society then we're failing our most vulnerable members (children). This isn't "justifying" the act, but rather seeing people for who they are now rather than who they were.

The victims can recover, yes, but the trauma and scars are permanent. It dehumanizes the victims and humiliates them to the point they want to disappear or have a new body altogether. I will never trust or forgive a predator or a rapist because all of them aren’t actually sorry and they would actually do it again if there’s a guarantee that they wouldn’t be caught. I've spent most of my life caring for children: helping my Mom with her Day Care, being a Preschool Teacher, running my own Day Care, being a mother and grandmother, babysitting for untold friends and family, etc. Never once was my mouth anywhere near a single child's genitals. That is not something that happens by accident. That alone shows that he is guilty of child molestation. How can you protect and/or defend someone like that? I'd be out for blood.

In my job I had to read statements from familiy and friends of a guy who molested his two godsons. His girlfriend has two daughters, he molested the older one who moved out at 16 to get away from him. Mother knew but didn't care. The guy's sister was molested by him as a young child, but supports him anyway knowing he did it to other children, because "he is still her brother". She writes him letters and promises to help him to build up a future after jail. He molested at least 5 kids (own sister, girlfriend's daughter, a friend's daughter, two godsons), had tons of child p**n on his devices and is in jail right now, but these two women still worship the ground under his feet. It's sick... these women are sick...

Time won't take away the crime, but it definitely matters a lot when judging a person for who they are now and what they were 20 years ago. You can't judge them in the same light as if they had done it very recently. Two decades is a lot longer than you're imagining and people can change their ways.
