Woman describes 'hijacked' migrant boat where five people died

Recent incidents of violence and hijackings have made crossing the Channel on small boats increasingly dangerous.
An 18 year old from Kurdistan tells our Europe correspondent Adam Parsons how she was rescued by French police from a boat on Tuesday - on which five people died.

I don't see any food shortage, and the housing problem isn't due to a lack of space to build housing or a lack of construction capacity. There could be plenty of housing to go around, but government has been playing a delicate balancing game on that for decades trying to keep house prices gradually rising so that homes may serve as people's retirement investment.

Why didn't the RLNI take all these migrants back to France since it was there the crime was committed? From the TV footage it was obvious the crimes were committed yards from the French shore with French police looking on. And why didn't the French pursue and arrest all of them? Then the perpetrators wouldn't get away with their crimes. Is it so bad in France that French police would just look on as violence leads to death on their shores and do nothing? Is France a safe place for the Olympics?

Several years ago I met a refugee who told me that he travelled on a boat and when the coast guard saw them, some on the boat killed others with machetes and tossed them overboard so that they had a better chance of being rescued. I always wondered if he was one of the killers as he obviously made it through to a new country.
