@@airbornepaddy993 I don't doubt your experience, that's just not mine. I even have come across people who teach English on KZbin and I've heard them tell their students that their instruction is from British English and not American English..their words, she said in British English, these are called biscuits and in American English, they are called cookies. British English calls this a lift and American English calls it an elevator, etc. She had other examples. Not everyone does this of course, but a large number do in my opinion. I remember in Germany in a large parking garage, they had instructions how to turn your parking ticket into the machine, how to pay and then how to exit. There was at least German, French and Spanish signs. There would also be that country's flag next to the sign of that country's language. I was surprised to also see two other signs both in English, but the wording was quite different. One sign had the USA flag and the other was the Union Jack flag. They certainly felt a need to differentiate the two signs of English words.

I am so tired of hearing this remark when factually your teacher was charged with teaching you English. I would bet your parents were expecting you to learn and speak English at school but not to say teachers can’t hurt children’s feelings very easily and that is wrong. Students talking English only to their peers at school is a wonderful way to enable learning because if you speak Spanish to your friends and another group speaks Russian to each other it results in less people speaking English fluently. Thinking you speak a language fluently does not mean that you actually do speak it fluently. If you didn’t speak it at school you missed an opportunity. My generation of teachers were prohibited from telling students to speak English only so that remark wouldn’t have been made but I think it has hurt all of us in the long run. One problem I noticed was that I would have classes where only two or three students were native English speakers.

As it should be my friend :) Now, on the flip side, if you have someone purposefully making it look like they don't speak good english (But actually do) just to be a bully or whatnot (It happened to me), then people can get a free pass :) I know they say don't fight fire with fire or don't do the whole eye for an eye thing, but there are quite a few times where you've godda do just that, otherwise, the harassment just ain't gonna stop and will probably keep getting worse as they know what they can get away with, the more you can be pushed, the more they will push...

My Great Grandma is from Italy she was 30 when she settled in New York her English isn't the best, and like the actress in the video, she has a strong accent. My mother, Grandpa, Aunt, and I speak Italian to her (from what my mom, and I know/remember) It hurts me to see that people don't understand that other languages exist no matter how long you have lived in America. My Great Grandma has been here for decades and can barely speak the language but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve to be here. She traveled the ocean and had to struggle so my family could be here.

Being multilingual should be encouraged and celebrated. It opens up a whole new world to you.
@beigekitten89
@beigekitten89 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agreed! But there's a fine line between encouraging and being a 💩 about it. If someone doesn't speak your language be patient and kind anyways until they do. You never know if they are JUST learning the language and that does NOT happen in a day. It takes time, specially adults. Being a total 💩 actually discourages anyone to learn but certain people don't get that...

I loved this episode! It's so touching knowing some people in the US act like that! I'm Colombian and I speak Spanish and English! The thing is, you shouldn't humiliate someone for speaking another language even if they don't know it! All of us are human beings and we deserve to be respected! I can't imagine my mother being in a situation like that, cuz she doesn't speak any English! So couldn't stand it! This episode teaches us that, we gotta help each other no matter from where we are!

I currently speak 2 and a half languages. Where i work at my friends are spanish speakers and all i do is speak spanish. A english speaker asked me a question one day and a woman turned to him and said dont speak to him! He dont speak english. And i spoke english she was stunned. I hear some people say many bad things about folks that knows no english and it is not right. We are all the same on the inside. Get to know someone and they are many good people out there.
