A family vacation ended in tragedy when a Pennsylvania mother was attacked and killed by a bull shark. Caroline DiPlacido and her family arrived in the Bahamas aboard a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship. As the 58-year-old went snorkeling, a shark attacked her. She was bitten on the left side of her body and later died from her injuries. Snorkeling is a popular activity for cruise ship passengers but it can be risky. In 2019, a woman was attacked and killed by three sharks while snorkeling.

As tragic as it is, there’s literally no way to go snorkeling or vacationing or whatever “safely” when you’re in the ocean. Period. End of. That’s the risk you take and it’s unfortunate but it happens. Just gotta be vigilant basically.

I don't know the circumstances of this recent attack but I do recall that in the case of the woman's daughter, the tour company they were with apparently had no first aid supplies on board, no other safety measures like shark spotters, and they weren't told that the area often had sharks (ik you should always expect that there's the possibility of encountering a shark when you're in the ocean, but it definitely would be nice to be told you're swimming in a more risky area). Maybe the mom is more angry about those factors? Don't know if they were relevant in this attack, but that would make more sense. But definitely agree, can't really be angry at the sharks.

This is exactly the type of situation I wanted to avoid when I went snorkeling in Hawaii. My sister was WAYYYY too enticed by the coral reefs and I kept signalling her to come back because we were pretty deep and I was worried what else might've been in the water with us. I was growing quite frustrated, but thankfully she finally understood what I meant with all my hand gestures and we swam back to shore.

Don't go snorkeling in the ocean, if you aren't prepared to come into contact with sharks. You're in their environment, swimming with their prey. Many sharks swim in shallows, not just bull sharks. Bull sharks can also be found in fresh water. This isn't a problem, this is tourists not doing due diligence and trusting the cruise ship company.

Nothing could be really done. These sharks hunt near the shore which is a problem for people wanting to be at the beach. If you close that section off entirely, that's a whole environmental issue there where the sharks can't eat and it's prey multiply. If you don't have people go there anymore, you lose tourism. There is one thing that can probably work and it's to ALWAYS have someone watch out for sharks, but even that can get tricky when the waters can hide them easily. So, in other words, the easiest thing to do is just be aware of something you can't even see
