You know whats really messed up, the movie the Ghost and the Darkness which was based on a true story. The lions in the story had developed a thirst for human blood because Arab slavers had been feeding week/sickly potential slaves to these lions. Unlike the Woman King though, the Ghost and the Darkness was a great movie.

Yes, but the conversation is happening because they are getting the facts so twisted and backwards that people feel the need to stand up and correct them. Is that something we want to reward monetarily and encourage more of? Why can't we have more movies that don't make heroes of not just slave traders, but slave traders, who practiced human sacrifice annually, who went to war and enslaved their neighbors who rejected slavery to crush their palm oil competitors, who defied the British who had banned slaves and even embargoed them to try to stop the slave trade (the movie despite being set in the time of King Gezo decides to portray Europeans as encouraging the slave trade and Gezo as reluctantly going along). We can have standards without having fewer Black movies showing their culture. These people were the literal definition of evil and yet they want to say white is black and black is white and I think this just hurts the cause as conservatives trying to "cleanse schools of critical race theory" point to this and say this is what the left wants to turn your history classes into. The worst part is if you wanted to tell the story of the Dahomey there was a way better way to do it. Just make it about Adbaraya Toya, a woman warrior turned slave, turned mentor and comrade in arms of the leader of the Haitian slave revolt/revolution. You can have good conversations that are based in truth. You just need standards and Hollywood only listens to money.

I'm adding it as proof that our history collectively isn't cut and dry and is very complex and has very grey areas and characters.

I'm not supporting this movie. The Dahomey were the MOST savage slave traders. They did *mass slaughtering rituals* of the slaves they caught. They are the worst that African nations had to offer. The reason why MANY of us Black people are here in the Americas, Europe and the Caribbean is because of the Dahomey. When Britain wanted to stop the slave trade the Dahomey said no we will not stop SMH. This is the movie Hollyweird wants us as Black people to be proud of SMH. Notice Hollyweird did not give us a movie about how the West African Moors conquered Spain and ruled it and southern Europe for over 700 years and how those Moors taught whites civilization... Notice that Hollyweird did not give you a movie about the Nubian Kush Queen that made Caesar stand down... Notice that Hollyweird did not give us a movie about the black nations that actually fought against the European slave trade... Notice that Hollyweird did not give you a movie about Black Egypt. Nope, those white producers gave you a movie about Africans killing and enslaving other Africans... We all know who runs Hollyweird. Imagine European Jews giving you a movie where they want you to be proud about a clan of European Jews catching and selling themselves into Nazi camps.. You'll NEVER see that movie and we all know why. Let's not even talk about the level of misandry against Black men in this movie SMH. Thank you and glad that Mayowa is bringing some balance and perspective to this issue. In general there's a right wing agenda to transfer blame to Africans as if Africans created and financed the trans-Atlantic shipping companies, the plantation system and the cultural and religious theology of white supremacy. In the big scheme of things the biggest enslavers of whites thruout history were other whites. Greek city states enslaved each other. There were periods in history where over half the populations of these city-states were slaves. The Roman empire conquered and enslaved Western Europe. Yet whites glorify these empires. Native Americans enslaved and sold their captives to Europeans. That angle isn't being played up and used as an excuse for the genocide of Native Americans. Then too we have to understand the corruption and racialization of Western chattel slavery that evolved into dehumanizing the black race. Before the trans-Atlantic slave trade slaves in Africa were absorbed into the greater society and could rise to become leaders while here in America we were legally reduced to being less than human.

Well if your gonna talk about black history they should get history correct . Colonization wasn't the reason by the way for slavery existing there . African had slaves even way before Christians and Europeans stepped foot in the land dating back to Genghis Khan , where they had African slaves who roamed the palaces over there. Another people also don't know that the first state recognized slave owners ...here in the U.S.A was a black man named Anthony Johnson , who owned one or two other fellow Africans as slaves . About one third of free blacks living in the U.S during the slave trade owned slaves themselves . One of the wealthiest slave owners The Ellis family , we're black slave owners who owned a sugar plantation . And there plantation and property , it is said had 3 times the value and worth then most of the white slave owners. I encourage anyone to read the book Black masters , where I black Harvard university professor delves deep into black history , and slavery here in the U.S.

@@warrenthompson7803 ...For most of history, slavery was a default practice of most nations dealing with war captives. Slavery became racialized by Caucasian Arabs and later Europeans who demonized and dehumanized the black race. Anthony Johnson didn't create that system. He didn't alter the Bible to make blacks the cursed children of Ham who could only aspire to being good slaves and have their souls washed white as snow to enter heaven. The stat that 1/3 of freed blacks owned slaves is totally bogus and part of traditional critical white race theory designed to whitewash the institution. The vast majority were people buying their loved ones out of bondage. The census then declared these people 'slave owners.' The right uses these totally misleading stats to obscure and mislead.

@@aikikaname6508 I agree with you, to me there is a lot of hypocrisy. As a person of Caribbean decent, I recall seeing a Just Dance video for a Caribbean song that was pirate themed, to me it was disrespectful given the history and how it crossed over fantasy into reality and true Caribbean culture. I think it is okay for anything artistic, cinematic, theatrical, film related to move away as far as possible from reality as long as what is true is not tainted. So to me as long as people are able to distinguish between fantasy and reality and know about the history of Dahomey, not just slavery-related (since the tribe is more than that), I have no issue. Instead I will focus and enjoy these films for what they are meant to be, I still enjoy Pirates of The Caribbean and if I get the chance, I will do the same with Woman King. I do understand the stance of feeling it is inappropriate. There are people who do not watch movies like these because of the truth and that's alright. I'm from Ghana and I don't quite agree with what you've said. Seriously stop defending the movie. I don't know how the story is told abroad but its not black people good and white people bad. The lines were extremely gray. We as black people caused a lot of our suffering. And profited from it too. As did the white colonial masters. The thing is slavery wasn't new to Africans then. We were already practising it among ourselves and with the Arabs. So people didn't really think too much about selling humans to the whites in exchange for stuff. And also the Dahomey weren't some innocent helpless group of people who were forced to fight for their existence. Even before the arrival of the whites they were feared. And rightly so. They raided and conquered wherever they could and that only got worse with the arrival of the slave trade. A lot of people who trace their ancestry to Dahomey may not even be Dahomenians. Loads of people who were sold from the ports in Dahomey were captured from other places. I think the West should leave Africa out of its propaganda. This movie could have been a great insight into our history but instead we got some woke inspired feminist pandering nonsense that had nothing to do with the history behind it. It's annoying at the very least.

Great video, excellent discussion. The Transatlantic Slave Trade is one part of the story of this Empire's story, telling it does not minimize the losses and carnage of the slave trade. Sometimes I think we are so traumatized as Africans and people of African descent by what we think is our history that we fail to see the humanity and truth in each other's experiences. We will only see and empathise with another person's experience when we humanize our own experiences pretty and ugly and all of the stuff inbetween. The families who lost brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents, to slavery and those who refused to willingly give them up also have a story to tell. We fail to see the losses were on both sides. Few gained for the suffering of many on both sides of the Atlantic. Walter Rodney explains some of these loses very well.

Not saying that they were not good warriors, but clearly not the strongest of the time. They, by the way, did not use any of the weapons depicted in the film. They used guns like anyone with a brain in the 19th century. you must understand black is a made up term that places all those tribes into one category, even DNA shows that their all not the same or all came from different lands, just because they all lived in the same lands during that time didn't make them the same type of people. That's like saying a Japanese person is the same as a Chinese person but they can see the difference, we just can't see or tell the difference, back then they wasn't calling each other black or African, they called each other based on the tribes they came from. Just because someone looks very similar doesn't make them the same as in culture and with culture comes a separate spirit that's different, they didn't all think the same or act the same, placing them in the same category is like saying that a ittalian is the same as a english person from England but if they where to mix they would say mix race couple or if they have children they would say mix race children, if Chinese with Korean or Japanese too mix race children. Black Americans are the only racial group of people who think that all so called Africans are the same but thats not true, not even West Africans living in places like Nigeria today see themselves as being the same, they could tell the difference, some can grow full beards and afros and some can't even grow them at all, some are tall and skinny, some are fat and short so they aren't all the same just like not every person in the u s are the same but here we see race for them they see differences in groups and they all carry different DNA types. Not every one in TOGO or Nigeria has the same DNA type which means that their different types of people but living in the same land. so when you say black on black crime your referring to the u s . to them they don't say black because that's a made up term , they themselves call out racism..... in nigeria they call different tribes racist if they do something wrong to another tribe, I know because i've been to many parts of West Africa.

Yep, I'm caribbean and it's difficult to accept but both European and African slavers were ultimately motivated by money (ppl forget that slave trading in W Africa predates colonialism so fending off Europeans isn't an excuse). The difference is that for the most part, European slavers used the money to fund colonialist exploitation which funded the establishment of their industries today. By participating in transatlantic slave trading, African leaders opened the door to colonialism the effects of which prevent them from building similar levels of industry. This is also why reparations are only being demanded from Europeans.

Most people have the European version of the story instead of asking Afrikans. The dahomey emperor was not to blame for the slavery as a whole the king Wegbaja was the first king of dahomey who thought it was wise to trade with arabs in the 16s. The arabs proposed to the king to sell the prisoners he had in this kingdom and that's how the slavery start in dahomey. The king also wanted to conquer neighboring kingdoms and upon realizing the MINO warriors made up of women who were elephant hunters, were good at combat and ferocity he made them his guards and sent them for special missions. The dahomey are not the women warriors the dahomey is the kingdom, the warriors were called Mino warriors. They were used by the king to conquer neighboring kingdoms and imprison the fallen soldier and it was the kings counsel [made up of both men and women] that sold the prisoners to the arabs and later on to the Europeans. Then in the 17s a new king decided never to sell afrikans as slaves again and used the Mino to enforce this rule and protect the kingdom. He undid what his grandfather had done and that didn't sit well with the Europeans. They were attacked and enslaved by the french later on. But before they were attacked and defeated they had made Europeans and arabs fear ever stepping foot in dahomey. I think its time we told our own story because we have people in the diaspora believing the Minos sold people as slaves and now they are hating on the movie.

I don't know . it seems to me that ppl are disappointed because they never heard that African kingdoms enslaved ppl and that's it. Hearing ppl who have watched the movie and those who know the specific history of the dahomey people, showed that the warrior actually fought against that. I really think Black people in the americas need to learn about african histories and not only use it as feel good stories about strength or whatever. I think it is weird that people did not questions the videos of those black kids who were mesmerized seeing a black mermaid even though there are so many stories and myths about Black mermaids or water spirits and water goddesses in the diaspora and on the continent. I mean I am also learning but I am confused how little this is shared to the kids because this should not be the case. Same here. How are people boycotting a part of history they very likely don't know without even seeing how that part of history was portrayed. I also think it's funny that so many in our communities are talking about Black royalty and queen and kings without one critic thought about the monarchy and what it could entail and how those actually looked like on the continent. I believe slavery was very often part of it though probably with different rules and customs, still. To compare it to the transatlantic slave trade just makes no sense. Still it doesn't make slavery better however why do people always want to compare it to the worst world atrocities committed by the clears instead of learning the actual history. However I think it's funny that some people think that colonizers who enslaved and thought we were animals , wanted to stop slavery. those who kept slavery alive and running even after the official ban and until today, actually saved anything for real. it is not nearly as simple as that, the reason for the women warriors was also in large part because of the need to give a good amount of the male population as tribute to the Oyo kingdom. It is not as simple as saying they were a purely evil people or these woke girlboss badasses. things to remember is that african slavery to other blacks was not as brutal as how whites treated their slaves The dahomey enslaved people to help protect their empire. And they sold them to the white people, but remember the whites were the ones buying them in mass to the point that they encouraged these slave trading economies. only saying the dahomey were evil slavers who deserved to die off and depleted themselves so much they drafted innocent women into their army. It is historical revisionism Im not saying they were all good people, they were not at all. @@Memelord-md5hs It wasn't African Slavery tho, it was downright Transatlantic Slave Trade of the vilest variety, Dahomey played a central role in that institution and profited greatly from it. De Souza, the biggest slave trader ever, even relocated to Dahomey to have a better position in the slave trade business. He was even Chacha to the Oba who he himself helped to gain and attain power and built familial ties to the nobility to ensure he would always play a central role in the institution, the Dahomean royal family resisted the fight for abolition at every turn because of how central this was to their power, the only reason so many people from Dahomey were even enslaved is that they would annex territory and enslave the population or do slave raids on subjugated territories, their political goal was to keep their profitable slave markets active. And to portray Dahomey having any enmity towards European colonisers is very silly given how deep they were with the Portuguese. Colonisation was never a problem as long as it wouldn't impact the slave trade. The whole women warriors being a result of male soldier depletion strikes me as silly, I don't think I've ever read anything of the sort, but still, the movie portrayal of that empire is unbelievably stupid.

I was so happy to be represented in such a complex story cause I felt so many of my natures and themes dueling it out. From brawn vs beauty, self-preservation vs altruism, duty vs passion, and submission vs autonomy. This was such a beautifully complex story which contained the least story sanitization that I have seen from a black & Hollywood movie. As a West African I can't and won't gloss over our complicity. There were some ain't sht traitors in the mix. But there were also those who were in a horrible bind and basically betrayed others to keep themselves or direct family from being kidnapped. And I really doubt they knew it was the absolute evil it was. Two of my ethnic groups, The Hausa and Fulani had wars even though much of the cultures are similar and captives/prisoners of war were called "slaves" but you could work or marry your way into freedom. They are different groups but in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon and Chad, we intermarried so much we're sometimes listed as Hausa-Fulani. These wars are how my Dad's side came to be Ghanaian. A Fulani group murdered an ancestor and his siblings. My great, great, great, grandpa fled Nigeria for Ghana. But he was half Fulani and our families continued to intermarry with Fulanis as well as other groups. If you'll forgive the example, it's kinda like if a Christian or Muslim says they hate Jews cos they killed Jesus. That bigotry erases the fact that Jesus was a Jew and that there were many Jews who loved and supported him. So it's always partly an issue of who does this skewed narrative benefit?

Some were regular folks trying to keep from being enslaved themselves. It may sound strange to hear but it also fractured African societies on the continent. The relatives were devastated by losing siblings, children, spouses, parents, etc. And of course the intense lack of trust for everyone around. In my mom's language, sometimes when we hear one of our relatives speaking to someone else in a language we don't speak, we say, "Don't sell me" half-joking/half-serious as in "don't betray me". The European teachers stopped taking students to dungeons called "castles" because African students cried. They were confused telling them, but it wasn't you. But it's obviously tragic AND it's family. So for the most part, we REALLY DON'T know what y'all went through and go through here. Their actions didn't exist in a vacuum - it's wild to ignore their treacherous environment. They keep mentioning that the british wanted slavery to end with their naval blockades but ignore the fact that it does not appear that it was an act of remorse for slavery. It's the same treaties in foreign languages that were supposed to be used to end export of enslaved people which the colonisers also used to take control of and rule by force many African areas. Coastal areas such as Dahomey still got taken over by France in the war when the people tried to resist french taxation. The European scramble for Africa at the Berlin conference some years after the acclaimed end of slavery was where Africa was officially torn apart between several European countries to feed on the African people and resources with no restraint. The treaties of control were obtained over African areas by coercion or machine gun power.Some Africans became hunters themselves to survive but it only delayed them becoming prey too eventually. Even after Europeans stopped taking enslaved people off the African continent they had no issues with using the people as domestic enslaved people to produce the cash crops, export products and extreme taxation which kept Africa over exploited. Africa has since been in various stages of simmering or outright internal conflicts across the continent. All these internal conflicts and wars are great obstacles to development,with heavy human, economic and social costs affecting the continent to date.Please do some research.

We should be careful about assuming that all colonial nations were on the same page. The Royal Navy blockade did not please the French & Portuguese bc they had forts at Whydah. From what I’ve read, the British didn’t have an anti-slavery treaty with Dahomey. Apparently, Dahomey could refuse a treaty with the British bc their capital was inland. The British did have sincere objections to slavery, owing to a humanitarian movement & the Industrial Revolution. There can be an argument made that the British did not live up to those humanitarian standards during colonialism. However, it’s reductive to filter the conflict between the Dahomeans & Britain through the typical lens of the Dahomeans being powerless Africans being steamrolled by Europeans. That being said, I couldn’t care less if ppl want to see the movie.
@MoneyOptionsConnect
@MoneyOptionsConnect Жыл бұрын
@@PussyWillowFairy you don't get to give the British the benefit of the doubt just because you feel like it when there are clear actions that demonstrate otherwise. We know they did not have humanitarian sentiments towards Africans because they saw fit to pay their own people who were slave owners compensation (a sum so large that they only finished extracting it from British tax payers of all backgrounds in 2015 ~the irony) yet didn't see fit to pay ANYTHING to the African people they enslaved and kept on the various Caribbean islands. The reality is that colonisation was evil, NOBODY sent Europe to do it (the white man's burden is a stupid farce to cover up their poser drunkenness) and you can never get away with trying to rationalise it. Their behaviour when they took part in the translantic slave trade was appalling and they had not changed their mindset about seeing Africans as less than them even after the so called abolition . They needed an excuse to position themselves for the next thing they wanted to do which was to take over the land and people instead of just removing people like they did before. If they really wanted to stop Europe from taking advantage of Africa the Berlin conference would never have taken place. Recently Britain pulled out of the EU screaming that they felt they were being ruled by an unelected foreign entity even though anyone can see that it was just an association where Britain actually had more controlling power than many of the countries in the EU. So they know how horrible and absolutely ridiculous it was to go to someone else's land and take rulership & ownership over them, there was no mistake in their intention which was what they delivered and along with the other European countries they left the continent a wreck(except they never actually left is the real sad joke of the matter) The Dahomey was conquered eventually by the French because they had higher tech weapons so I am not sure why you are trying to act like Dahomey could have completely resisted if they wanted. No matter how you dice this, the Europeans left their homeland continent to rob& pillage other continents, that's the history and that's why most of the world is as unbalanced and messed up as it is even today. To imagine colonisation was not even taught in schools as it really happened shows the ridiculous efforts that have been invested in keeping it all secret like other people have not been sacrificed to have the western progress. Europeans who had traded with Africans for many many years, even written books about how much better and comparable some of the kingdoms they met in Africa were to where they were coming from , for the sake of greed, of covetousness decided to make any and every excuse to degrade and dehumanise Africans for profit. Do we even dare talk about the evils Belgium did in Congo or the is the French or the Dutch or the Germans in various African countries, where do we start this horror stories from???

It's crazy how we can support monarch stories/movies in every other context, but feel the need to problematize African monarch stories. I mean, Game of Thrones (inspired by true monarchs from all over the world), Tudors, The Crown, Spencer, Vikings, etc. etc. All these other stories get to be romanticized without boycott or discourse. If you critique the glorification of slave hood, let's go deeper into the OG of parasocial relationships Pimp Pastors, Religious and Spiritual Cult leaders, Chiefs, not forgetting stanworship (the beehive, barbs, ninjas, beliebers, the Navy, etc).

@bcpeinhardt Жыл бұрын
@@itnotmeitu3896 Except it kind of did. It centered around the completely false story that 1. Marcus Aurelius wanted to return the empire to a republic and 2. that he was against gladiatorial combat. The hero of the film is not a slave rebelling against the Roman slave state (which happened all the time actually, the Romans were terrified of slave rebellions), but instead a high ranking military hero tapped for leadership by Marcus Aurelius, wrongly removed from command and placed in bondage. Ask yourself why this has to be the case, Why can we not get behind a "low born" hero? (We've been doing this to folk heroes at least since Robin Hood btw). Why do we instead prefer a general who is effectively noble, and who spent his entire career slaughtering Gauls. There is no reconciling of this btw, At the end of the film, he is honored specifically because of his service as a "soldier of Rome". Where are we supposed to think the gladiators came from except roman military conquest? Historically, for a roman general, the primary way you became wealthy on campaign was by taking slaves. The movie could have addressed this, shown us some change in Maximus' feelings about his military career, but instead they end with civic pride in the institutions that ended up killing him. It's honestly a deeply confusing way to end the film in my opinion. But the point is that we are effectively celebrating a militaristic slave state and it's fictional heroes rather than any of the real life people who died at the hands of said state, I think because in the US we see ourselves partially as the inheritors of the Roman Republic. In that context, we find the figure of Maximus worthy of celebration because he champions "the republic", while disregarding his obvious involvement in the slave trade. We do that with our founding father's too, and I don't think it's fair to ask people to hold historical figures to modern standards, we have to celebrate the good while recognizing the evil, but I think it's entirely fair to hold modern fictional characters to modern standards. I think we already celebrate enough slavers as it is.

But how did we become “Americans” in the first place? Lol it’s just so strange how people pick a choose a narrative when it’s convenient. But I definitely agree that this is an important part of history that needs to be talked about. People will talk about how Africans sold other Africans into slavery like it’s some sort of slam dunk on critics of colonization and white supremacy. But it was the Europeans who put slavery into overdrive through colonization and justified the abysmal treatment of black people by constructing the idea of race and white supremacy in the first place. White people had their slaves, prisoners of war and indentured servants too.

We need movies about all of the African slave trades all over the continent and their results. A lot of African slave trades sold people from different tribes and different religions. To the point where our African 'family' sold entire tribes into slavery thus they sold entire tribes into extinction. As an FBA/ADOS I want us black Americans to know the true history! Also many of the women leaders who fought and liberated Africa were spiritual person's, they fought inspite of their non violence beliefs but becuase they didn't have a choice but yes you are right Hollywood would show that when hell freezes over. 🤔 Chuckle, chuckle.

Thank you for discussing this. I just saw this pop up on Vudu and was curious what it was about. I have not seen it yet, but here is my take on it. My father is 66 years old and grew up in the deep South during segregation. He always supports black movies whether they are good or bad. His thought process is if we do not support the movies even if we don't agree with the content/actors/actresses/producers, Hollywood will think it is not profitable and cease to produce that content. I think that's the reason so many people supported Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. Even though they may not be a fan of the superhero motif, at least someone was willing to tell our story.

I love the way that your mother explained that and I will make sure that I will tell my children that one day. I think that is a beautiful way to explain how we should stand together as black people. Especially with children, i remember other black kids talking badly about me or even me joining in on bullying the chocolate brown girl and this is a PERFECT way to make children think about their actions towards one another.

White ppl took slavery to an extreme. That Africans didn’t do to the over Africans. I also read that slavery was a small part of their economy. I’m so glad you touched on this topic

There’s slavery right now in Atlanta. Over 10,000 black women and girls missing And never being found bc of our refusal to see ourselves as the culprit.

I don’t know where you are going with the Megan Markle comment. Everything you said was fine up to that point . The constant toxic vitriol directed to the Duchess is about limiting the aspirations of women of colour the syntax being the Cinderella outcome is only preserved for Becky, Darcy,Felicity, and Chelsy!

2:49 "Slavery was a result of colonization" um... No. It wasn't. You really need to brush up on African history because the truth. Even hard truths are important. Africa Colonization "officially" happened with the 1896 partition of African content amongst the imperialist European nations. And it wasn't until 1963 in my country of Kenya for example that we attained independence from the Brits. Slave trade began in the 13/4/5th century, depending on which part of Africa. First with the Portuguese then ultimately the other European nations joined in the spoils. Please look up the treaties the Portuguese made with African kingdoms on the western African from Senegal to DRC congo after trying to forcefully take slaves and finally deciding to trade for them instead, and this was after losing naval scurmishes in mordern day Senegal for example. Please look into how DRC Congo monarchs for example got sooo indespensable and rich off of slave trade to the point they visited and even had portraits in European palaces. By the time Colonialism came to Africa, slavery had already been abolished in the Americas & Britain. In fact, the only "European monarch" that practiced Slavery at the turn of the 20th Century was the Ottoman Empire (modern day turkey) and that was until around 1912 thereabouts. Disclaimer: My dates could be a bit off as I'm writing this from memory but one fact remains undisputable. IT WAS AFRICANS THAT SOLD OTHER AFRICANS into slavery. First to Portuguese middle men in transatlantic slave trade and ultimately to the Brits and others later on.

we need to have more conversation about black slave traders because that's how slavery began. it wasn't just Europeans snatching Africans from there home.

Thank you for the educational video, I didn't want to give money to the movie because all of the backlash I have been hearing and all the info about it. But thanks to you I make my own research and I will watching it when is available on streaming. Also some of this misunderstood history also has happened in Mexico, a good chunk of the population and educational books tell us that where the spanish that destroyed Tenochtitlan and that it’s not accurate, many other cultures joined forces to destroy those who has abused them...there are some books that said that only 1% of that army was European.

The purpose of history is to learn from your ancestors, what they did well, what they didn't. Why do we keep getting colonised?

I think ppl are just tired of seeing dark skinned blk women forced into the same roles by Hollywood: strong, Wakanda warriors tropes. Nothing more. Nothing soft, light-hearted or playful. The movies are always about struggling, hardships and death. We long to see ourselves outside of the slavery days. That's not all we are: children of slaves. Movies like the little mermaid show us that blk girls and women can be soft, and ethereal princesses, we can indulge in fantasy, and mermaids are based on African folklore so we should have been been had mermaid movies years ago. The happiness of blk girls for the new little mermaid movie goes to show you this portrayal is important and very much needed too.

@@amenajackson8133 if slave narratives is ALL we see then there is something wrong. We were royalty as well, we were the first doctors, scientists, Kush had the first university in the world, we had ancient arts and technology. The streets of African nations had lights well before the first streets of France were even paved. Moors ruled Spain for hundreds of years. Why isn't any of that ever showcased? They *actually* happened too. These negative "historical" movies traumatized and embarrassed me, my siblings and many other black kids i knew growing up. They're harmful without a proper balance of many positive stories about blk ppl. These films too often toe the line of being trauma porn.

What does soft mean? Black women are not white women. We dont have to behave like white women.. We don't have to look like white women....We are what we are. This soft narrative has to be reviewed because what it really means is 'mimic white women'!!! We are not men and can never be men, regardless of what people see or want to propagate. This white washed way of looking at things is sad because it really shows how enslaved We still are in our minds!!
