No amount of loneliness could make a sane woman send her life savings to a text message.
@GadisBaliLivesAbroad7 ай бұрын
The thing is, loneliness during old age hits differently. I say this from my personal observations caring for elderly people here in the states. If someone has a close relationship with supportive and loving family members who care for them on a daily basis, it will be easier for them to feel content and not desperate looking for love or companionship in the wrong places aka being scammed. Many people, especially young people think that there is no way they will be easily scammed in the future when they are old, however they forget, we humans constantly change and aging is real. Many suffer from cognitive decline that may not look obvious from the eyes of outsiders. The reality is if you live long enough, you will see your family members, acquaintances, and friends pass this world, one by one, life can be extremely lonely at that stage, especially if someone doesn't have any family members who care for them. Elderly abuse is rampant. Elderly people need to be protected. In addition, for elderly people who have gone through very stressful events in their life, it will be easier for them to believe people who will tell them what they want to hear, even if that's only for money. Human brains are amazing and in the survival mode can easily convince someone that red flags are green flags.

I hate it when people say "It can happen to anyone." No, no it can't. These scammers target a specific demographic who are more vulnerable and susceptible to falling for their tactics. They target people who show signs of being lonely, desperate, gullible, or all of the above. These are typically recently widowed people, older folks struggling with finding love, average or below average looking people wanting to date out of their league. The victims always lack self-awareness and are disconnected from reality, otherwise, they would not fall victim to these sorts of scams. They are the types that wouldn't even question why an overseas man 20 years their junior with lots of money and six pack abs would be attracted to an overweight retired grandma living in the Midwest. The scammers get away with it because they play on these people's delusions. "Once he completes his $14 million oil rig contract off the coast of Brazil, he's going to pay me back the $50,000 I lent him and we're gonna live happily ever after." So wait, you've been engaged to someone you've been talking to online for 9 months and have never met? "We haven't video chatted yet because he's on a secret mission in Russia and we haven't met yet because he got arrested in Yemen for not declaring gemstones to customs when he was flying back home."

It's fine as long as you regularly talk to AND video chat the other person and never give them money. The video chat is important. Nearly all of these victims have never video chatted the person for good reason. These Nigerian scammers cannot video chat because the victim would immediately realize they aren't who they claim.

It’s possible to get romance scammed in person as well. My elderl family member was romance scammer who was very real. She became intimately involved with this much younger man who had her run up credit card debt to “help” him out of troubles. She had to declare bankruptcy. Beware!!

My ex-husband had me buy a lot of expensive stereo equipment, and furniture on my credit card. A few months later I found out he had a girlfriend that he was "attached" to but he said not like me. He would not come home some nights. I called a moving company and made arrangements to move everything out while he was at work. I kept the credit card receipts in my hand in case police were summoned. It worked out smoothly. I was stuck paying for things I didn't especially want, but at least he didn't get away with swindling me and cheating on me.

Online dating can be difficult for the uninitiated. Some basic rules to avoid time wasters and scammers: 1. If there is any reason for a meeting in person to be some way off such as the person being in a far flung part of the world, walk away. 2. If a meeting in person doesn’t happen soon after starting conversation, it probably never will. I think that two refusals/excuses is a good rule of thumb. 3. When chatting online don’t get overly emotionally drawn in. Just talk about the kind of person you are and what you’re looking for - and then either meet in person or not. 4. See “online dating” as a phrase, not a reality. Actual dating only happens in person - and if that isn’t happening, stop contact.

The commonality of those who fall victim to many of these scams are often people with an innate desire to be loved, which is an understandable human condition. One must temper this desire and control it, or those who can spot this vulnerability will exploit it. Speaking for myself, the moment I felt secure within myself and did not require external validation from others, I had the ability to control my romantic life and set firm barriers that rarely fail me. And never send money to an individual online you have never met. Ever. No matter what the reason. Happy Canada Day.
