It had to have been pure anguish for that lady, ,and of course the dog. It's gnawing at my guts just thinking of that poor dog being chained up for at least a year (that we know of). That chain was so short. That's torture for a dog. No stimulation, next to no exercise, not well fed, total boredom and living in the elements constantly all alone. Dogs have been known to go crazy subjected to that. They are so social, thriving on packs and/or human contact. They can become deeply depressed and fearful spending that much time alone, or go feral. It would be like keeping a man in a cell for that long. That lady must have kept that poor dog sane.

Maybe she wasn’t neglected. Maybe the owner took good care of her and just left her outside when they went to work for the day. Or maybe the owner never played with the dog and never let in in the house. The video doesn’t let us know. The dog doesn’t look malnourished though, does it? Maybe it was malnourished before the woman started feeding it, but the video doesn’t let us know. Just because it didn’t have food in its bowl when she first found it doesn’t mean it wasn’t well fed. Maybe the owner fed it before they left for work and the dog had already eaten a whole bowl of food, and maybe the owner was planning to let the dog inside and feed it again when they got home. Maybe animal control said the owner had to surrender the dog for some sound, legal reason, but the video doesn’t let us know _what_ that reason is, and I am suspicious. If there are horror stories about CPS keeping kids for bad reasons, don’t you think animal control could make a bad call? Don’t you think that if you called animal control on a decent owner enough times, animal control might start to suspect that the decent owner is actually bad, and don’t you think that after a year the decent owner might just get so frustrated at having to deal with animal control that they would relinquish their dog so they don’t have to jump through hoops anymore to prove they’re not abusing it? Maybe that’s not what happened in this case. It would have been nice if the video explained why animal control allegedly said the owner has to surrender the dog. Now a bunch of people, including myself, suspect that the previous owner was actually not that bad, and this woman harassed them into giving up their dog. Again, maybe that’s not what happened, but so many people seem to be assuming that the dog was left outside 24/7 when we just don’t know whether that’s true or not. And from what we saw, it didn’t really look malnourished. And the woman even said it was the happiest dog she’d ever seen, which she might have attributed to it being excited to finally get attention after years of neglect, but maybe it was just a friendly dog that likes people and was bored while it’s owner was at work.

We learned from a similar experience, it helped some to explain to animal control that there is no one else putting food or water out for the dog. If they do a check and see the dog chained there with no source of food or water, and clearly suffering from it, then it is able to be confiscated legally. Although in our situation, the dog was chained in a snowstorm with no shelter but with food from concerned neighbors, and animal control said they could only confiscate once the dog dropped unconscious from cold... they seemed to bear no ill will that we rescued the dog from the property before that could happen. He lives a very good life now.

Wasn’t she healthy enough dog for three feeds a week? It’s just proves that the original owner was giving food to the dog and she was in great condition for a 24/7 outdoor chained dog. Dogs who are chained all the time tends to gets aggressive and plus she’s surely gotten akita genes in her which is already notoriously hot headed dog breed, so her being friendly shows that dog had been given great exposure with humans in her life. So well behaved dog + properly fed dog + kennel in background and well kept yard just showed that she was being taken care for. Maybe taking it from the front and back at the same time, being filled up good and proper - being satisfied like you clearly crave? Maybe it takes a line of men to give you what you need? To everyone here saying it's OK to keep a dog chained alone outside "as long as it has food, water and shelter?" Please don't get a dog. The dog doesn't want an owner like you - and be honest, you don't really want a dog; you want an alarm system. Which is good news as it's cheaper. A few exceptions - some dogs guard sheep - but even they aren't chained outside; they roam freely and consider the sheep their family.

Actually a dogs sole purpose is to please it’s owner. If that dog had been trained to guard the yard and done it it’s whole life, although missing out on a lot, it won’t be miserable and depressed like a human would. As long as it it has been trained this way...

@@hummingbird275 It's actually true. That dog was well taken care of. You can see it in it's weight, friendliness, no damage to the neck which would have shown it being left out, dog shelter nearby, dogs just like to dig deeper because it's cooler the deeper in dirt. Don't you think her visiting and feeding it scraps every now and again would have that dog at a very low weight? There was no mange from fleas or anything that would show neglect. Think about it.

@@WadeAlma Yeah, it was probably just dirty from being outside all the time. However, if a dog is going to be outside so much, it needs a fenced area, not a chain.

@@fearlessarchangel Some dogs clear fences like it's nothing. I doubt this one couldn't. Also some places wont let you build fences. Especially high enough for that dog. I knew a dog tied to a tree for 11 years, since it was a puppy. I saw that dog every day as I was its neighbor. This was in Tennessee.
