I was also quite surprised that Innocent was just intersex. I was thinking "Is that it?" and was mildly disappointed. Upon looking at Catholic perspectives on the film though, I think I've changed my mind. Generally, most Catholics seem to HATE the twist. They think that Innocent being intersex means he should immediately be disqualified and it's a total violation of their faith. Seeing that perspective made me realise how big of a deal the final scene really is for Lawrence. It's the ultimate test of whether he is willing to rely on his faith in the deceased Pope he loved, the progressive politics he pushes for and what he feels is right. He can't be sure he is following the will of the lord, in fact the vast majority of people he would associate with would be telling him that an intersex pope is in direct violation of the lord. But Lawrence has to suck it up and have faith that he knows what is right and what God would truly wish, even if his entire upbringing and community disagrees. On the point of Innocent becoming Pope at all though, I don't think it was too unrealistic. As some others have mentioned in the comments, I think you need to look at it not just from a political lens but also a spiritual one. At this point in the film, the ultra conservate portion have decided on a single candidate and can avoid splitting their votes, while all the moderates and progressives are still throwing their votes for many different parties. What they needed was a unifying force so that the entire 'progressive' base could agree to vote on one person. At first it seemed like this would be Lawrence, mostly just because he was close to the previous Pope, had various connections and had supporters who trusted him. This wasn't a spiritual pick, it was a strategic one. Lawrence himself doesn't seem to believe that he has been spiritually chosen, he just thinks that they can't let the conservatives win and that he might actually want to be Pope. However, when the ballots are going to be cast for Lawrence, the explosion happens. This very much feels like divine intervention, if you were one of the cardinals this would be an immediate sign of "Lawrence is definitely the wrong choice". Lawrence casting a vote for himself while the church is torn apart and rubble perfectly cuts and coats him would definitely be seen as a sign. He is out of the running now. But at this point, there's no one who can lead the progressive base. That is until Innocent's speech. Partly the words of it, partly how it is presented. He speaks in a way which is extremely Christlike and a window perfectly frames him with divine, heavenly light. In any other movie these details would be for the viewer alone, but because of this setting, it's very likely that the other cardinals would be seeing this as a sign. Innocent is the right choice. And that would be enough to sway any of the progressives who were uncertain which candidate to vote for, their answer was already provided by God.

Welcome back, Nadia, we missed you in these commentaries, and I hope that your baby is thriving. If Adrien Brody doesn't win Best Actor, I hope that it goes to Ralph Fiennes, since he delivers one of the finest performances of his career.

I also was underwhelmed by the reveal, but I think the sudden shift in votes can also be attributed to an act of faith/ epiphany. At the end of the day, despite their foibles and politicking the cardinals are presumably believers.

also, by him being so new and 'innocent' they probably assume theyll be able to steer him to their side in the future compared to the other candidates who are more seasoned.

I'm so tired of seeing YotuTubers with immaculate, brand new t-shirts, usually with their own trite logo/trademark on it, so when I see Man wearing a hilariously faded, loose-fitting Coca-Cola t-shirt that's probably been used and washed hundreds of times, it's like a breath of fresh air.

I don't think it's about the twist being revealing, just coming out of left field. I saw it in the theaters without knowing anything about a reveal, and loved it, but it felt like the ending was coming from a different movie. Not super controversial, just sudden.

i thought the twist at the end was excellent; the entire story revolves around the liberal cardinals trying to elect a liberal pope and the reveal makes them question all their convictions because it asks the question of how far are they willing to go(how libera are they willing to become)

The score doesn't match the plot of the film. Sound says one thing while the story is so reserved and unexplosive (Except for the actual explosion outside) Like you said the twist perfectly encapsulates my point. I expected such a bombastic ending then it's a big nothing burger at face value. Some thematical resonance but hardly anything good.

of course YMS hates this lol. I watched it deep in the bowels of a nyquil binge and thought it was suspenseful, noble, pretty and possibly funnier than it's aware of. Loved the austere set pieces and all their preposterous pope tech. Agreed that the "twist" is just kind of a development.

@ggadams639 3 сағат бұрын
I really liked the movie but the end kinda ruined the message of the movie. It destroyed the subtility of the build up and theme to make it into like a quick easy propaganda about modernity and gender normes, instead of focusing like the movie did on what is faith and being worthy.

From a Catholic, the ending made sense to me. Because the new pope was elected based on his own merit, whereas if it had come out he was intersex he would have been expelled from the clergy if not excommunicated, no further questions asked.
@dancinginfernal
@dancinginfernal 25 минут бұрын
Except the reveal is what presents the true test of faith for Lawrence. If the clergy became aware, Innocent would be excommunicated, even though he would be the right choice, politically and spiritually.
