CLARIFICATIONS: 1) I shouldn't have repeatedly used the word "prostitute" but instead "full service sex worker". Some sex workers find it derogatory, some reclaim it - it's not up to me to decide what's best as I'm not a sex worker. Apologies for this and will bear in mind in future! This is a SW-friendly channel. 2) Carrie Chapman Catt initially opposed a *NATIONAL* suffrage amendment, similarly to some of the anti-suffragists in England. She believed women should gain the vote state by state. This was so contentious that it led to the split of the National American Women Suffrage Association. She later changed her mind and campaigned for national suffrage. Apologies for misspeaking here, to say she was against "suffrage" was a sweeping statement. In hindsight, I should have made the distinction between local and national suffrage clearer.

I’m so glad you pointed this out, because the factor that makes Carrie Chapman Catt one of the most noteworthy feminists of the time was her adaptability. She first joined NAWSA during a time where grassroots, local election efforts were the norm - making her anti-national suffrage. As the progressive era dawned, and more cries rose for an amendment, Catt found it all too radical. She eventually realized that her views had to evolve with the times, and grassroots efforts were not the best way to advance women. Thus, she started campaigning for the vote on both the national and state level, being president of NAWSA when the 19th amendment was passed. Carrie Chapman Catt is a perfect study on how viewpoints need to evolve, and recognizing the flaws in your advocacy is crucial for the continuation of a movement.

Yeah. It’s more like I don’t think anyone should be mandated to go to war, but war is an unfortunate reality of society so anyone should be potentially at risk (without being privileged by class to escape). It is odd and aggravating that became the term used. I notice many pro-choice people, including myself, slipping, and using the term "pro-life". It is so ingrained in our language. I'm also reminded of what Susan Faludi wrote about anti-feminist women in the seventies and eighties. For a lot of the rank-and-file of them, they tended to associate their positions with their communities more than themselves as autonomous individuals. For example, they might be part of a religious community with a highly complimentarian norm that more equality between the sexes and genders would disrupt. So for them, they saw feminism as a danger to their communities, families, ways of life, etcetera, even if feminism sought to further liberate them as individual women. What Faludi wrote about the women in positions of leadership and influence among the anti-feminist movement back then tracks a bit with what you are saying about the anti-suffragettes' leadership and the "not real" influencer types today. A lot of them were already in positions of relative privilege inside their own communities, and some of that privilege came from the privilege of the husbands they married. Equality was a threat to that intra-community privilege they had built and so it was in their self-interest to oppose it. For example, Phyllis Schlafly had a position of privilege within the broader right-wing ecosystem in large part because she opposed women having positions of privilege and influence. If any women could have the kind of influence Schlafly had then Schlafly wouldn't be an "exceptional" women anymore and would lose her power base.

I think it's not the same everywhere, but where I live men can kinda be forced into fatherhood, at minimum monetary support. Once proved a man is the father, DNA usually, he need at least to pay alimony. Some women use that, sometimes using tricks such as piercing condoms, to have children and live of the father's money. Now, this are edge cases, women in general still get the short end, and as is their body, it's my opinion that women should have the choice alone about carrying the pregnancy to term. But just to show that the system such as it is now can be bad for everyone, even if not equally bad.

In the US a mother can get a child support order & if they ever apply for any state assistance program will be forced to help the state track down the father if it isn't known who or where he is then enable them to get a child support order.] However, two things about those is that 1) In like 96% of cases child support amounts are nowhere close to enough to live off of. 2) Child support is not the same as alimony. Child support money is to cover the non-custodial parent's financial obligation of the costs involved with caring for a child/children. Alimony is called spousal support in the US nowadays & while even in the 1960s was pretty uncommon [25% roughly of divorces,] it is even rarer today at only roughly 10% of divorces. The amounts for both child support & spousal support orders are pretty complicated & based quite a bit on various individual situations. A rough idea on child support amounts would be in my state if the custodial parent makes $2,000 a month in gross income & the non-custodial parent makes $3,000, if there is 1 child & that child stays overnight at the non-custodial parents home between 36 & 72 nights out of the year then the non-custodial parent would have to pay $487 in child support a month to the custodial parent. Subject to adjustment based on some other individual factors [mainly due to special expenses a child has that is outside the usual expenses considered in the calculation such as work-related child care costs, insurance/medical costs, or any other "extraordinary costs".] Also, here in my state at least there has to be a DNA paternity test to prove fatherhood. Even for normal parental rights if someone has a child outside of marriage then for the father to get any sort of parental rights [& to put any obligations on them,] they have to get a court-ordered DNA test... even if they are on the birth certificate as the father [which requires their signature to do.]

The day roe v wade fell, they posted a celebratory tweet and facebook post while all of my other friends in our social circle were mourning, including me. Look up the deaths of Savita Halappanavar and Sheila Hodgers. Or, more recently, the 10 year old Ohio girl who was raped and almost didn't get an abortion. Also, slightly related, look up how child marriage is still legal in the USA and how the pro-life men of the GOP keep blocking bills to make it illegal. It's shocking how much being "pro-life" is connected to denial of medical care and human rights for women and girls. Even then, if your role demands strength, you will be trained accordingly, and if you are too weak, you will be given a different role. For example, my friend wanted to be an RAF pilot but because he had mild hearing damage that would have affected his ability to hear commands up in the air, they reassigned him to maintenance. Basically, people are sexist and try to write off their sexism as pragmatism while ignoring EVERY other pragmatic approach to modern military recruitment.

i'm a teenager in india and i do seem to see this in my social circle. It is so frustrating when other girls and women do this, and the end of it i'm left really angry . But i had long decided that i was not going to bash other girls especially in the presence of boys. What kills me more is these people actually believe that an opportunity that has long been given to men, if given to women , would be unjust to men. i'm mad just writing this. Also, I want to point out that there is a big difference between bashing and criticising girls. If a girl says that women shouldnt be allowed to vote, she should immediately be criticised for it, regardless of whether there are boys present or not. If people arent criticised for their ignorant beliefs, then they will never change. I understand its difficult to publically criticise others when nobody is on your side and everyone else disagrees with you, but please never feel like its a morally bad thing to criticise other girls or feel like you're "bashing" them.

Gonna send this to my sister, I'm not the biggest voter and neither is her boyfriend. We both kind of look at it as "I don't understand politics well enough to make an informed decision and we're all fucked over either way." But my sister is a very adamant voter partly because of the history of women not being allowed to vote and partly due to the corruption in my country (N. Ireland) that within living memory meant that a Catholic vote only counted as half a vote and was not considered a "real vote" (hence why we were always told not to use contraception- contrary to popular belief it had nothing to do with the church and was more about producing more voters). She is adamant at voting in every election regardless of who is running or what the election is for and has said to me "I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, I'm not going to tell you not to waste your vote, I'm not going to ask you about it unless you want to tell me but so many people over here died so that we could have a voice in politics and to ignore that would be disrespectful". She's a smart girl and I've a lot of respect for that mentality.

I’m from Australia where we have compulsory voting so I find it kinda odd when people don’t vote. Like sure basically all politicians are corrupt, but opting for the lesser of two evils is def better. Also because basically everyone votes at home if you feel like there is no good options you cast a donkey vote, basically an incorrectly filled vote or a blank one, people draw obscene doodles or write F*** you all on the ballot paper and all those votes get counted so when the results come in there is a count of all the invalid donkey votes. Personally I think that matters, because a big increase in donkey votes indicates dissatisfaction and that sometimes least to party changes. There are other issues with Australian politics, but personally I like the compulsory voting part. It also means that campaign money doesn’t have to go to trying to get people to go vote, parties can focus on voicing their platform instead.

@@ed-wh8ih Yeah, it’s a fine, it’s small enough to not be financially devastating but big enough to make it worth voting. I think it’s like 50 bucks these days. But also postal voting is easy and there are lots of polling places and it’s always on a Saturday so it’s not too hard to do. Also most polling places have a charity BBQ so you can pay a couple of bucks for a sausage after voting, people generally don’t mind going to vote because the barriers aren’t high.

I'm from Chile, and I read a book on women's right to vote nationally some years ago, and one bit of info that has stuck with me from it was that the arguments against it from both sides basically boiled down to the right side going "but what if they vote for the left?!" and the left side going "but what if they vote for the right?!" in a weird mutually paranoid loop. Haven't watched this yet but these women on tiktok joking about the women who fought to have the right to work---no one's telling them they HAVE to work. They can, by all means, just marry a man and not work. Some women, however, love financial independence. In France, we have a say : Better alone than in bad company. I started debating right wingers in 2016 and kept at it pretty aggressively for a few years, but it just left me drained and with very little faith in humanity. Most people spouting these kinds of opinions are not looking to have their minds changed, and attempting to do so is insanely unlikely to work online. If you have family or friends who are conservative, that’s a different story because you have real leverage there, socially. My opinion on how to be proactive online, though, is to simply focus on educating moderates and the politically apathetic on these issues and why they should care, because I think a lot of centrism comes from ignorance, but that a lot of them are trying to do what they think is best for everyone. I also think arguing for the lurkers is way more the point if you are going to debate an alt right reactionary, so stay calm and educational if you can, and don’t resort to slurs please. I think shaming reactionaries is fine, but don’t do it in a divide and conquer way, us vs them. It’s everyone vs harmful ideologies.

Last year I became 18 and I was so excited to finally have the chance to vote and make a change. So I started studying all of the political parties' programmes and after that I just realized with horror that the only options were right-winged and very right-winged. I did the only thing I could do and voted the less terrible option which obviously was a super small party who nobody ever heard of. After that the super right-winged party won and I've never felt so insignificant. Thank you for showing clips of Giorgia Meloni in this video, for now nothing terrible happend, but I am very angered that many more years will pass before basic rights like same sex marriages and adoptions, trans healthcare, abortion and total equality between women and men will come to fruition for the public. That said I will keep fighting and I will keep voting until things get better, I'm positive that one day we will make it and I can't wait for it happen.

I was 18 and about to vote for the first time and I don’t remember exactly why but I made a “joke” that ended with ‘why are women complaining, we gave them the right to vote’ to my mum and dad. My dad and I chuckled in ladspeak and I thought nothing more of it. Later that day my mum asked me if I consider voting a right and I answered yes emphatically. She then told me that if it is a right women have always had it really and it was basically withheld for millennia. My brain hiccuped and I’ve never forgotten that since.

It's very strange that politics can never be simple, no matter the issue. Recently my mind was blown when I learned that the super-racist, hyper-traditionalist H.P. Lovecraft was explicitly a socialist, at least for awhile. And I myself was anti-abortion for a long time after becoming Catholic, because I was inspired by radicals like Dorothy Day. I tried to justify my position in feminist/socialist terms as much as I could, with help from various pro-life feminist writings. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised that some women manage to find ways to be against the right to vote.

Someone posted a long response to my comment and argued that HPL was not a socialist, then apparently they deleted it. But I will respond anyway. Maybe it will help someone else interested in the subject. I read about Lovecraft becoming a socialist a few months ago, but I've forgotten where. So I did a bit of digging and found that the subject is discussed in S.T. Joshi's massive biography of Lovecraft, I Am Providence, chapter 23. He goes into some detail to show how Lovecraft "converted to moderate socialism" in the early 1930s. HPL stated explicitly that his contempt for socialism in the past had been wrong, and he adopted the term deliberately and with due consideration. Also, after digging into this book to find out about HPL's socialism, I'm interested in reading the whole thing. It includes a lot of fascinating details on HPL's intellectual development, and the ways he engaged the currents of thought in his day.

It's a proven fact that conscripts fare poorly against an all-volunteer force, even if they have a numerical advantage.
