This was part of footman trainings of soldiers in ancient persia and became less popular during the 16th century by replacement of Muskets. You can see every shape of weapons which the champions use in zoorkhane, you can see heavy objects resemble bow, mace, shield and sword. Polo or in farsi *Chogan* was another ancient persian sport and was a part of the field trainings of the cavalry forces in the region and it also became less popular when lighter guns such as automatic rifles were introduced to the region by the british late 17th century, so even cavalry men started using guns. Chogan was mainly practiced by the kings guards and the last chogan field that was built is the _Naghsh-e Jahan square_ in Isfahan. In chogan you can see when a chogan player hitting the ball resemble exact methods when a cavalry would use his weapon to attack a man on foot. Zoorkhane how ever were easier to access by the locals ,there were no need of daily maintenance and care unlike a chogan field, so it remained part of the cities up untill just few decades ago where most of zoorkhanes were closed, there are still a few in every town or city but due to the western influence on the local's culture and the youth ,less and less people learn this sport.

I keep saying this, but Iran is a far more diverse country that we give it credit for. The US screwed up decades ago in failing to align a democratic Middle East government that had, more than any other, the makings of a truly pluralistic, open society. But we had to depose the elected president in favor of the Shah, who was more like Saddam Hussein than anything else. If it's played correcting, though, in a few years we could have that pluralistic country it could have been a long time ago.

The political movement to free Vietnam from the yoke of French colonialism sought the support of the US, citing our own deliverance from English rule. Yet for other political reasons we sided with France. Didn't work out well. As to Iran, though, maybe you mistyped there, he was a murderous dictator who cowed his people and had a secret police force that even Iranian students in the US feared. That they used the influence of religious fundamentalism to pull together a coalition to overthrow the Shah was inevitable. Sadly now they've spent decades trying to get out from under that, as a people. Once you put a dictator in power, whether a materialistic or religious one, it's hard to get them to give that up. Now, the rise of the Shah is a very complex story, of course, as the influence of British, Russian, and German occupation and trade had become very important of course. After WW II, when Reza Shah was ruling in the style of a secular president a la Turkish government, because of his ties to Nazi Germany during the war, the Allies forced Reza out and established his son, Shah Muhammed, who is the Shah we know, however after the war, another group rose and they elected Mohammed Musadegh (not sure of spelling) that was a non-communist left-wing leader who wanted to wrest control of Iran's natural resources back to the country while diminishing the influence of religious leadership. After he nationalized the oil industry, well, naturally this inflamed Britain and the US as they had extensive interests in those oil reserves. SO together they led a coup that ousted Musadegh and re-instituted Muhammed Reza Shah who became a horror of a human being.

With all due respect for all the athletes in the world. With my fathers mentoring and teachings. We are both trying to be the first to promote Zoorkhaneh and the sport of Pahlevani in North America. Because this sport is very useful for martial arts, and overall health throughout life. My father has been doing this with martial arts for over 50 years. First I'd like to say Asalaam Alaykum to the people of Iran. Even though I'm African American. I'm a Shia Muslim and very familiar with wrestling in Iran. I have many Iranian friends here in my city. And I've been to a Zoorkhaneh before. Although I'm not a big sports fan, martial arts is one of my favorite pastimes. And I've enjoyed studying Islamic martial arts in particular. I hope these ladies can get a movement going. And I'm loving how women are using Shariah to battle for women's rights and equality. Good luck ladies.

I am actually surprised how religious and ritualistic this sport is in Iran. Like in India & Pakistan it's a lot more secular, and a lot more focus on the physical fitness aspect, although not without some religious aspects... Why is that though? The music and the trance-like state reminds me of Sufi "meditation". Also, realistically speaking, what are the grounds for the prohibition for women, or rather, what are the _alleged_ reasons? Also is this purely a government thing or is society at large hostile towards letting women participate?

Those are actually traditional Hindu Clubs and Akhada training not Bowling Clubs. Kushti was described in Vedic works. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_club. Gada and Akhada training dates back to 5-7th CE and was also noted and well written about in Arthashatra by Kautilya in 4th BC. Persians only started using this in 19th century. Stop cultural appropriation.

they do for themselves in accordance with their religion. Its a choice made by them because of the belief system. You take agency way from these woman when westerners talk like this. Difference is in iran and more religious muslim countries the majority of the population is muslim and practice laws written around the Quran’s law and teachings. it is about giving more freedoms to women, and the fear that if women are empowered they may choose to leave or break away from their traditional roles... or nag their husbands for stuff, shift of household duties to the male, delay marriage or child-birth... in more developed East Asian countries women in the workforce with more purchasing power and independance, many have broken away from more traditional female roles...

Then in the end find themselves alone without a husband. Thats why they have the term "leftover women". Women that trying to be strong and idependent will be more destructive to them than you think. In the end that strong independent woman will want a super man to come and pick her up when she's in her 30s, or it'll be really hard for her to get a husband becuase men typically want youth and beauty.
