I was genuinely surprised by how similar they looked with and without makeup. I think I've put too much pressure on myself, thinking that I look SO different and SO much better with makeup that I perceive there to be a bigger difference than there is. This video gave me a confidence boost, and reminded me that I look fine without it.

@Monica Dollive: If you wear makeup for yourself, it seems to make no sense whatsoever to "perceive there to be a bigger difference than there is." The difference _is_ what you perceive it to be, and a perception can't be different from itself, nor can it be bigger or smaller than itself.

As someone that hasn't been wearing makeup for years, hearing people talk about how they won't leave the house without it or else they feel anxious/naked/judged, breaks my heart. Choosing to go without makeup has been HUGE in my self-acceptance journey and is utterly freeing. I hope more people can experience life without makeup because it also gives you back a lot of time, mental energy, and money.
@lennygreen8497

I agree, I have never worn makeup out side of the house (unless tinted lip balm counts 😂) and I think it's helped me accept myself. Even when I had hormonal acne, I never wore it, and it made me love myself. I didn't want to hide or pretend that that version of me didn't exist. She deserved love and the ability to live just as much as I do now with clear skin, and I felt like makeup would almost betray her. Which sounds so stupid, but I think it makes sense somehow.

Soooo true! Tremendously freeing! It feels great to be like: "So what, if somebody thinks my under eye shadows and hyperpigmentation don't look good?! They can look the other way, can't they?" Yeah it sucks, I notice a difference in different people’s approach to me when I wear make up versus when I’m not (I don’t wear make up often, probably once every 2-3 months). I don’t feel like myself with make up. I feel like I have confidence and I’m on a different level but at the same time I feel like a fraud. And that’s why I choose not to wear it. I want to be confident in my own natural beauty. But it’s a work in progress but I will get there. I also stopped wearing bras for that reason.

The woman that said she needs filler, and made the "yuck" face when she said she was 31 (29-31 is tough because it's that first major hill you gotta get over into getting "old") is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. I hope she lets her face age more gracefully, because nothing looks worse than an older person with a bunch of filler. She'll be beautiful no matter what age she gets. But no one can tell her that and have her believe it. She has to figure it out on her own.

My mother told me the same and I ended up bullied and called ugly in part because I never learned how to do makeup and my mother refused to buy me any makeup products. My life and people's impression of me improved drastically with a little help of some concealer and other handy stuff I learned later on and I honestly wish there was some older feminine figure who could guide me through it instead of straight up refusing to elaborate in any way and giving me empty "oh but you don't need it". Unfortunately I learned a bit too late for my middle school self lol. At least I know what to do as an adult, but I feel like the older you get, the less vicious people around you are about your appearance, and I needed it back then. Like yeah obviously I don't need it, but it could've definitely been better. I think another thing that really made me feel bad as a child is that everyone around me treated makeup as some vain "underhanded tactic" kind of thing only "women who don't have anything to do in their lives" do, but that's just individual and I feel like it isn't really perceived like that anymore.

I think it’s important to consider the possibility that after not wearing makeup for a bit, you may come to prefer your “bare” face. I experienced this after thinking I couldn’t take my makeup off (especially concealer for my under eyes) for a while, and I feel much freer now. Normalize no makeup-it’s literally normal/natural!

I had a spurt where I wore makeup around puberty to try it out but stopped caring or got lazy so stopped and haven’t since but now have been reconsidering because of more acne scars. I just don’t want to become dependent on it and feel uncomfortable not wearing makeup in public so that’s why I’ve been hesitant to do it again. I applaud these beautiful ladies for being open and every single one looks just as amazing without makeup

i feel you but i must say if youre afraid of becoming dependant on makeup you shouldnt see it as a means to cover up your flaws bc lets be real.. no foundation in the world can just eliminate the texture of your skin. Makeup isnt perfect itself either and if you want to use it as a means to be perfect youll just never be satisfied. Use it as a way to play around have fun and enhance whats there because makeup isnt gonna make you something youre not but it can help you see parts of yourself in a new way.

I wish I could feel confident not wearing makeup in public but I know I would feel soo anxious. I’m 33 and still get acne on my chin, so I want to cover it up, but then I need to put foundation on the rest of my face to make it match. And then concealer, powder, mascara, etc. I seriously applaud you for being comfortable going out in public with no makeup, you’re a stronger person than I am. I would love to only put makeup on when I felt like it, or when I want to slay especially hard. As I’ve grown older I hate the way it feels on my face, and I never wear it at home because it’s just so nice to let my skin breathe and to be able to touch my face without needing to check if I messed anything up. Makeup can be like a shield, a defense to make yourself feel comfortable, but it’s also a huge pain in the ass.

Obviously everybody has a unique experience with it but… this happened to me. Around age 14 I started wearing makeup every. Single. Day. Home alone? Makeup. Sweating all day in 12 hour dance practice? Makeup. I couldn’t be alone with myself without makeup on. My real face became the face of a stranger. Like, she was a different girl completely and I didn’t think twice about her. I hated her tbh. This lasted for so many years. But during the pandemic I went through a lot of health issues and wearing makeup every day just wasn’t viable. There’s one positive tho: I got so familiar with my face! My REAL face!! And I started to like her! I have textured skin and freckles and acne and dark circles and I have a huge nose and deep inset eyes AND I LOVE IT. I love my stupid face cause it’s mine. I went makeup free for 3 years. I finally started wearing it again, but just to enhance. Like. ACTUALLY to enhance. I gave up on foundation entirely lmao but I do shadow, brows, mascara, etc. and I still only wear it like 3 days/7. I dont know dude makeup is a journey. For some people it’s liberating, for some people it’s… different. And for others it’s just a step in their day! Sorry I went off on such a tangent in your comment. Just be mindful and do whatever makes YOU happy. Most people don’t care/notice if you’re bare faced. Either way have fun!

I started getting more interested in make-up at about 10 years old. My Mum shared her struggles with not being able to leave the house without it, how addictive it is, and how wearing it makes her feel more ugly without it. She told me that I was beautiful without it, and I'll be beautiful with it, and that she was happy for me to experiment and to wear it for special occasions. She also said that she was not comfortable with me wearing it every day at school etc because she was afraid for me. I am SO glad to this day for that conversation and boundary. I hardly ever wear make-up and feel completely normal without it. On special occasions, I can put some on, or leave it off, it makes no difference to me. I'm so thankful that it was a middle ground, that I wasn't stopped completely but I was given the space to feel comfortable in my skin.

As someone who has a degree in gender studies & has studied/seen the evolution of the appearance expectations placed on women, we're at a time where it's nearly worse than it's ever been. It's so sad to see a 16yo not imagine presenting to her peers without makeup. Makeup can be an enhancer as that woman said & an artistic expression, but more often than not it's also about patriarchal standards placed on us & capitalism keeping those up to make more money. The change truly does start with every individual person, as hard as it can be 💛

Is it really about "patriarchal structures"? The are many different parts contributing to the culture of make up and most by very far is generated by women not men. Peer pressure, social media pressure and so on mainly comes from other women. Fashion is dominated by women. Most pressure often comes from ones in-group, not just in this situation, and blaming some out-group is also extremely common. You can't solve confidence and self-worth issues when your analysis is wrong.

Gender studies? What a joke. These standards are placed by women themselves in particular movie stars. The patriarchy is to blame for everything, you have no role to play - just a bystander. One of my New Years resolutions was to stop wearing makeup as frequently. I went from almost daily to once a month. I also found that makeup gave me confidence but I’ve started instead to focus on my skincare so that I can feel more comfortable in my own skin literally. I went from seeing myself without makeup as seeing a stranger to the complete opposite. It makes my morning routine easier and now I don’t have to worry about someone asking if I’m sick or tired just because I’m not wearing makeup lol.

That's super normal at 16. What is sad is that feeling persisting into adulthood like the rest of these women. So much so that girls like Anjouli get their face pumped with chemicals when they've only just finished developing physiologically.

I use makeup, but no fundation or anything of the sort. Basically just eyeliners and eyeshadows. Not because I think I am better off this way, but because I am honestly afraid that once I learn how and see myself with perfect skin I am not gonna be able to go back to 'everyday look' with imperfect skin. It crushes my heart when I hear (specially young) girls saying they can't step out of their houses without a full face on, but I sadly understand how so many fall and get pushed to that point. And all the people in the video look beautiful both before and after

It doesn't come like this. Majority of those who do makeup well did it quite awful for first 3 years. If you start at school, it's not a problem, nobody can do it well. But it's harder start later.

Everyone looks so much more natural and super pretty without makeup. I personally never got the hype about makeup and now with 40 I still don't know how to properly apply makeup lol. Never had a problem not wearing any and I think my skin does thank me for it as well. Hope society will change to more natural looks again, without using filters online and thick makeup.

The 16 year old and the 66 year old both made me feel the most sad for them. the 16 yr old, you could see her self-esteem just drop as soon as the make-up was off, even though she looked nearly identical. And of course the 66 yr old, just that whole 1960s mentality "I can't leave the house without lipstick on!" is so exhausting. This whole video just solidifies my pursuit of a minimal to no make-up life.

I’m a woman but I’m very much gender non conforming. I don’t wear makeup, I don’t shave my legs and I like it. I think society has put so much pressure on women and girls to be and look a certain way by pushing products on to them. We are slowly become more accepting of not caring about makeup and shaving but it’s slow. I really enjoyed this video.

I'm 30 years old and I've never wear make up. Sadly a lot of women envy that. I don't look like a model but inside of me I can't evite feel beautiful, like honestly I feel beautiful every single day... so they don't envy my appereance but my confidence, and is an essence-based confidence, a character-based confidence, not an image-based confidence. I have no body hair and I have good bone structure. That "social pressure" is mostly women judging... is just I don't care about what people say...

4:18 omg this makes so much sense to me now. Anytime I put a bit too much makeup, I tone it down and I never understood why. Even my friends say I don’t look like I’ve put makeup on sometimes so I try to put more but I can’t get myself to go out like that.
the REAL reason you're ugly without makeup.
