Everything is great about this. The two main commentators ( and the female stadium commentator in the background). The setting. And, of course, Phoebe. And, finally, this meet's women's 800m is becoming an annual treat.

I doubt many women have run their first sub 2 min 800m and gone under it by so much. It was an astonishing performance, I hope she makes it through the GB trials and lines up in Paris. That sort of time makes her a genuine contender to make the Olympic final and maybe even more than that.
@folkmoot365 ай бұрын
Running is a funny thing. She may not improve on that time for many years or maybe never improve like Joe White, who's British under 18 record she took. Lets just enjoy a wonderful athletic feat and put aside what the future will bring. If she qualifies for the Euros and Olympics, which i doubt , it will be a great opportunity to gain some experience at the top level of competition.

@@folkmoot36 Yeah UK 800m is tough in the UK but Gill did back up her time with a 1:58.07 at the weekend in Manchester off a crazy fast 55s 1st lap so I think she has a good shout at making the Europeans or Olympics if the pace is fast in the British Champs. I wouldn't be that surprised if she PBs again this summer too, both her 1:57 and 1:58 have come of very quick first laps, so who knows what she'd do with a more even paced race... like Hodgkinson did in Eugene (on the same day Gill did the 1:58).
@folkmoot365 ай бұрын
@@corleth2868 That's good news,, it shows she is consistent. I noticed she wasn't selected for the Euro's. Maybe that is just as well because they are always slow tactical races,, which probably wouldn't suit her style. Similar to Joe White who never improved upon her under 18 time, Marian Geissner Hubner only improved her time to 1:59.13 at 19 but never ran faster. And there has been other great juniors who seem to stall when they reach the seniors level. So that's why i worry a bit about great young talent being put under pressure through the expectations of the public. I'm looking forward to the British Championships. I hope she runs in it.

@@folkmoot36 I missed that the European squad had been announced. 2nd in this race Erin Wallace goes with Keely Hodgkinson and Alex Bell. Bell and Hodgkinson are no real shock but Gill did beat Bells 800m event record at the weekend and beat Wallace in the video here. I'd have selected her if it was up to me. Sport is littered with age groupers who never make it in the seniors but there are also plenty who continue to perform at senior level. Time will tell I guess but I seriously doubt that all 3 medallists in the European 800m final will run sub 1:58 and if you can run that fast then why not do it from the front rather than risk a tactical race ;o)
@corleth28684 ай бұрын
@@folkmoot36 She chose not to go to the Euros btw to focus on her school work but she just beat Reekie in the British Championships running a 1:58:66 and IS going to the Olympics. I'll be amazed if she doesn't better the time she did in the race above and there was no pacemaker in the British Championships. 59.x 1st lap leading + 59.x final lap to bring it home. British 800m is pretty good and a 16 year old who had never gone under 2 mins at the start of the season is now a 17 year old with 2x 1:58s and a 1:57s who is off to Paris. Hodgkinson, Reekie and Gill is a pretty decent team to send to the Olympics, all 3 could make the final and all 3 could get a medal although a British 1,2,3 is unlikely ;o)

Great run from Phoebe ! She's very young , let's hope she can repeat this regularly . Easy to shine bright and burn out quickly . In addition this track may become known as a quick one and attract many more international stars to NI . 😀

When WR 800m was achieved the first lap was 56.82. Phoebe ran 56.56, bringing into perspective how fast it was. I was surprised she managed to hold on easily, most don't. The pacemaker was meant to run 59 sec for the first lap, seems they went too quickly.

Wow! That's incredible. So fast and fluent. It's like watching a female version of David Rudisha. 1:57.86!! Sensational. With a time like that Phoebe should be selected to compete for the UK at the Paris Olympics. So what if she's only 17 years old. She can go for gold with no expectations or inhibitions. Don't hold her back. Just believe in her and go for it. Well done, Phoebe. 👏👏👏

No junior (under 18) female athlete has ever run the 800 metres in under 1.57. Phoebe Gill's time is the official European record and second all-time behind a Chinese runner from about 1993.
