I am considering buying a travel trailer for my 2024 LC and I wondered what your thoughts were regarding length. I am committed to a travel trailer that weighs 4500 lbs or below, but there are trailers up to 29.5 ft with that weight. In your opinion, at what point would you say a trailer for the LC is too long?

@@lesbennettjr1182 personally I wouldn’t go that long. You have a 112” wheelbase. The Silverado towed campers and the trailer without much concern. It is 147” long.

So many parroting that the TFL review showed the LC wasn't that great for towing... except for the fact that it actually towed 6000# at 10k elevation incredibly well. The fact that they didn't read the manual adequately and could not engage tow/haul mode is on them; it was pointed out that they f'd up and they still didn't admit it, even though they said they would admit it (crickets in the comments). As far as this 'test' goes, we have no idea what the tongue weight was, thus whether trailer loading affected how the vehicle handled. Second, anyone who tows with a vehicle like this knows to shift manually instead of allowing the vehicle to hunt when it cannot 'see' the upcoming terrain. Temps remained in a reasonable range, that's a win. This 'test' proved nothing, except that we all know not to tow a vehicle's max tow weight... there's a surprise.

The only "towing error message" I ever got, was from a buddy on the CB radio telling me my trailer puked its contents all over the road behind me...lolzzz😂 "Keep going!" He said....haha

That old C10 brings back fond memories of life on our farms as a kid. One of my brothers has our dad’s ‘63 C10, same patina as yours Tim except no fancy chrome rims. Yours is a beauty! 👌

TFL found the same when they towed up the Ike with it or its cousin the Lexus. Andre said it doesn't feel great when towing heavy, and he wished there was a proper tow mode in with the driving modes, and that there was more control over what the vehicle does while towing.

I think the tongue weight may have something to do with the ride quality. I know you have the truck on the trailer little further back than optimal to lighten the payload on the Toyota. However that will definitely cause some bucking. All these newer vehicles love to boast about "towing capacity", but ever notice they never boast about "payload" capacity? They will say "can tow 15K" but only give you 1300 pounds of payload. Ya right... good luck with that.

Without the WDH your fore/aft pitch motion is less controlled which could cause the towing comfort to be less than ideal. I’m surprised you didn’t use a WDH on this and when towing the same load with the Silverado since a WDH is recommended when the load being towed exceeds 50% of the towing vehicle’s GVWR.

I didn’t even think about it. You can’t imagine how much is going through your head trying to get everything lined up to shoot. Plus, I’ve towed this exact same load with the same trailer several thousand miles with no concerns.

I used to tow ATVs on a flat trailer and even a 7k lbs toy hauler with a 2006 Suburban, but haven’t towed anything since getting rid of all of it in 2011-12. Now that my kid’s D1 athletic career is almost over I’m thinking of dipping into over landing with a small trailer in the next year or two.

I'm surprised my buddies & I didn't die 20+ years ago from the way we used to tow trailers with trucks mismatching tires, probably way overweight & no type of weight distribution hitch... Still got our work to the job site, or our toys to the 🏜️... Probably should not of, but when everybody wants to get out there & have fun (+your very poor) we made it happen Captain, also putting 6-7 people in a vehicle that holds 4 comfortably 😂 When we started, my buddies 'n I barely had different clothes to wear back then. Hard work made it better, still struggle but that's life & imo it helps build character

Hey Tim, great video, I love these real world experiments. Seems like a good max tow experiment that will give prospective buyers a better idea about how things work in a "worst case" scenario: max weight, relatively steep hill, 3,000-4,000ft minimum altitude, 90F+ temperatures. Definitely will stress a vehicle! What did you think about the brakes on the LC for this type of work? Too little? Enough? Fellow (now ex-) Nebraskan (current Minnesotan) saying hey!

According to what I can find on DOT regulations, it is not legal to pull a trailer rated at 7,000 pounds with a truck rated at 6,000 pounds, even if the trailer is empty, as exceeding your vehicle's towing capacity is considered unsafe and can be illegal, regardless of the trailer's current weight; always follow the towing capacity specified by the truck manufacturer. This trailer appears to have 2 , 3500 pound axles, there should be a tag on the trailer with it's max weight rating. Given the towing vehicle is not rated for 7,000, you are illegal when it is hitched up and empty.

I know in my old 4Runner you could put the shifter in manual and it would lock it in 4th gear and you could tow without a bunch of gear hunting. Maybe you could do the same with this?

If it is SAE tow ratings, it’s a sea level rating and needs to be derated with altitude. Max rating is being exceeded above sea level. Just like TFL, the details matter. They shouldn’t be max towing anything in the Rockies. Suspect both you and TFL are overloaded. Never use full towing rating above sea level.

I guess I am not sure why Tim is so "shaken" and would not do it again. Seemed on video that the LC did pretty well overall. Maybe the old trailer tires need balancing and the electronic safety systems are a bit overly "helpful" but considering the load and the vehicle, it seemed OK. What are we missing Tim?

So you are trying to go 65 up a hill in vehicle not dedicated for towing. Try playing with speeds, towed my travel trailer at 6k lbs up AZ mountain grades and if you go 55-60 it’s butter towing up hills around 3500 RPM uphill and setting cruise downhill let’s the electric motor keep speed in check. Didn’t apply brakes one time going down 6-7% grades. Only normal cruise works when trailer hooked up. I’m seriously impressed how well 30ft overall trailer pulls. Jayco 264BHW trailer. Averaged 12ish MPG through mountains.

It’s a modern car. It’s literally an over air software update anymore to fix the thing people are blowing out of proportion. No ones buying these to tow 6000 pounds BTW….literally a trailer with bikes, a pop up camper or anything 4k or less….

I have a 24’ 2500 duramax and got up to 26 mpg on the highway on a big diesel truck. I would be shocked if the V8 GX couldn’t get anything over 20mpg

Hi I tow for a living delivering cars with a van and trailer the truck on the trailer is far too far back there’s a simple guide. 60/40 that’s 60%of the load forward of the trailer axles and obviously 40%behind the axles no wonder you wouldn’t do it again would be a good idea to load your trailer properly and re do the test Dave in the Uk

A 4 banger engine with a. Turbo is not made to tow. This landcruiser needs the option of a V6 engine with a turbo. Not sure what thr boys at Toyota HQ are smoking giving a full size suv a 4 banger turbo engine and I am guessing bcuz they don’t want to cannabakize sales of the Lexus GX. Full size suv with. 4 banger and Americans can’t get enough power to tow large loads

Towing with such a small motor with a turbocharger is a recipe for disaster. Those turbos are glowing red hot! Those extreme underhood temperatures wreak havoc on wiring, electronics, fluids, everything!

What does the 4 cylinder have to do with the faulty electrical connection between the truck and the trailer causing fault notifications. 65 mph up a hill with with a max load is pretty good with a gas engine. The hybrid motor certainly does is job. They’re also towing that load with an improper setup. Definitely should have load distribution and sway control with that size vehicle! The number of cylinders has no bearing on their difficulties!🤔
