The best timing for foot sweeps in striking is WHILE someone is striking. There are different timings even within just that. A good one is getting an angle and swiping at the back of the ankle/heel right before someone completes the step for a committed jab with the arch of your foot. I also recommend the books "Best Karate Kumite" and "Best Karate Kumite 2" for some good setups for these kinds of techniques. They can can be hard to read at times but it's worth it.

I remember my old Shotokan tournaments, foot sweeps were glorious if the timing was right. Caught more than a few people out moving forward at the right time, but this worked JUST as effectively will full contact glove sparring if not more due to the opponent committing before their foot lands in stance.

That's what's up man. I am a South-Paw, and obviously I spar with Orthodox fighters 84% of the time. Instead of throwing my rear kick to the inside of their lead leg...I favor kicking the outside of their left leg with my right leg. It's so much closer, so I can do it quick as well as return to my stance incredibly fast. In retrospect, they can do the same exact thing to me, lead leg against lead leg. However, most people don't do that because they favor the rear leg. Stay Up Man. Love The Channel.

Try catching peeps on the front foot as they step into you. The weight is transferring onto the front leg and you'll get a bigger effect. Works great as you exit off your own punch to the inside or outside of their lead foot. Your combining your sweeps with your high kicks looks really promising.Great work Wonderboy, always enjoy your content.

Alright, the hardest time to pull it off is on the opponents rear leg as they kick with the lead leg. I know it seems that that would be a perfect time but the rear leg is far away making it hard to get to, especially after having to avoid their kick. And with all their weight on that one foot, it is stuck to the mat pretty well. Think about this, when do we use ashi waza, it is when they take the weight off of the foot we are sweeping. Try the dragons tails right as they throw a jab or as they are placing their lead foot back on the mat after having thrown a kick. Or bait them to slide toward you by sliding backwards, as they slide towards you to close the distance you created, dragons tail. Practice sliding back then sweeping as one technique.

Sweeps could be easier to execute, if you are in the clinch or in standing up grapple. Using upper body to throw down the opponent, as you use sweep to unbalance the opponent. Those karate tournament videos in the beginning, they were using hands too, to push down the opponents, as they sweep or calf kicked.

I love finding people I can trust to spar with, just that touch sparring full speed maybe some colliding forearms and shins especially when you're flowing between styles and your sparring partner has Wing Chun foundation, but that was the great thing with all my friends that we would just flow through styles. I remember one night it was my buddy Jerome's bday and towards the end of the night we end up in the alley under a street light forming a perfect circle for our ring and we sparred. Another time my friend Canaan and I were sparring out on the walkway to my apartment and there was a thunderstorm going on and it was EPIC, we'd collide with attacks and lightning would pop off and as we throw some more and find another critical strike thunder would roar, the rain would swoop up and hit us at times under the awning. It was like God was playing cinematographer for our fight!!! One time I sparred with an MMA guy foundation Jiu-jitsu took him over 5 minutes to get me to the ground as I'm breaking his grabs and lighting him up with combos, then he gets me down and in an Americana I believe. I was about to give up when I realized there was a hand crushing my nose and I couldn't figure out whose it was, then I realized it was mine as he tares my shoulder muscles a bit and tells me "you need to tap" I respond "I can't, my hand is crushing my nose" Then I moved to the country started at a factory broke some toes and haven't practiced in 3 years.. partly because I keep fracturing my dang toes lol, also don't have anyone to spar with when you live 5 miles outside a town of less than 300 people..

Once was a 1st Dan black belt in Goju-Ryu - haven't practiced for many, many years. I used to drop so many guys with the sweep, even today in any muck-around sparring I do it unconsciously and put the other guy on the ground. No idea why it was always so natural for me... but yes, it works. At the highest level it might be more difficult.

@@tatumergo3931 My teacher was Burdett Shihan, wonderful man. We had Ingo de Jong visit for a while - he inspired multiple kicking off one leg. I could turn my back foot into a kin geri around and inside the opponents from knee, flick it in the opposite direction into a head kick and then bring it down into a sweep going the other direction. It worked a treat… I would do myself an injury attempting that now lol…

In my opinion that reverse spinning sweep is much much less effective than front spinnin sweep. When you do it non reversed there is more power from the spin, easier to catch a legg between your shin and foot and if you are too close its easy to transition into scissors takedown.

Do you think sweeping would be more common in MMA if you could kick a grounded opponent? I feel like one of the reasons sweeps aren't seen as much in MMA is because you can't easily exploit them to a finish because of the rule set. I always think of the Tony Ferguson sweep of Justin Gaeje (followed by the weird sand and magic hands thing).

I cant imagine dragon tail sweep ever working. if it does I have no idea how to do it. Then again I never tried anything like that outside video games. I seen a youtube video when someone used this sweep but I think at very least you have to be in excellent shape have flawless technique, be very balanced and flexible to even try to get something like that. and you had to practice martial arts since you were a kid. as far as recovery from it if you miss. I think capoeira kick would be good way to recover from it because you can throw it from the ground. that is of course if you are very athletic and practiced this for long time. but for someone capable of doing a sweep like that and actually being capable of using it successfully with enough practice they would probably be able to learn this kick as well
@ruger519952 жыл бұрын
Think these have potential to separate someone above anyone if they learned these and got good enough to where they could miss a sweep but employ something else like a trip in the same attempt. Lazer focus to see and Time a round house get under it and sweep. Youd have to be a wizard to get it to work i think but someday someone will get it figured out

I think if I wanted to sweep someone I would first kick them to inside of their lead leg with my left leg to get them little bit off balance then step outside them and do a pendulum kick but instead of going for upper leg or behind the knee I would go to a calf and turn all the way to sweep them as I lower my leg to the level of their ankle I'm not sure if this would work but at least you would get in a strong pendulum kick to the calf and get the opponent off balance.
@bartangel486711 ай бұрын
@@tatumergo3931 that sounds interesting if it is possible to sweep someone using karate against a firmly planted opponent than this would definitely be an interesting attack. even if it is possible to sweep someone only if they are only on one leg this would still be important part of stand up fighting especially if added to muay thai and in combination with leg kicks so that if someone lifts his leg to block a leg kick they are exposed to a sweep. I don't have any actual experience with muay thai sonly what little I learned from my brother. and none in Karate. but delivering a good kick to the leg with Muay thai is easy even for someone who just does it from time to time and doesn't really train just hits the pads from time to time. Karate sweep on the other hand would be very hard to do by anyone except those who did it since childhood are in their prime now and are genetically gifted in terms of karate on top of it. and I never seen it used in UFC or anything like that. at least in actual fights. now I'm not saying they don't work even if most practitioners say they don't but if they can be done the question becomes can they be done against resisting opponent? as you know pushing someone who is just standing vs someone who is bracing are two different things and I don't know if a sweep of this type would work against opponent who has his feet firmly planted on the ground. although I would like to believe that you can sweep someone who is supporting themselves on only one leg. (although for me that makes no difference because this is not something I could ever do and I'm not sure anyone except those I mentioned could)
