Well sometimes it’s not the right decision though. Braving ice waters to go try and rescue 50 people from a plane crash is not the smartest thing to do. Chances are you are not going to get anything accomplished nor be able to save anybody’s life but will instead add yourself to to the list of those who already need rescue.

Gary England is Oklahoma's hero. He has been very missed since his retirement, but we will never forget how many lives he has saved over the span of his career. In every major tornado to hit Moore, OK (1999, 2003, 2010 and 2013 especially) he was there, saving countless lives. We miss you, Gary, but also hope you are enjoying the retirement that you so well deserve! Thank you for everything you've done for us! ❤

I've seen a few videos of this plane crash. And I still can't believe any flights were allowed to take off in such terrible, blizzard-like weather conditions. It would have been better to err on the side of caution and ground the planes til at least the next day. Sure, the passangers would've been ticked off. But they would've all been alive had they not taken off. How those few people survived truly is a miracle, and Lenny truly is a hero.

Our schools were closed that day, I was in 10th grade that year, I was watching TV and news cut in, the first shots showed cars on the bridge with no roof and one even had an arm on the armrest but no other body, it was live footage so gruesome, then they covered over the side of the bridge and trying to get the stewardess on a ring from the helicopter but she was too frozen and kept falling off. 2 years later I drove with my friends to 14th street which was at the time a red light district, on the way home the 14th street bridge had an open space where the plane went in, no barricades even, I guess they knew nobody would drive in and I don't remember hearing anyone ever did. This was terrible, it made an impact even just seeing the live footage.

While I can understand the woman's anger that they were not being rescued by the bystanders, there is not much those looking on could do. That water was below freezing, a lot of even healthy people could go into shock just jumping into it to save someone. And someone drowning attempting to save someone just takes away the rescuers time when they do arrive.

I think the point was that a bunch of people did jump in and help in various ways, some literally jumping in. More examples of how bad piloting, or bad mechanics kill people. The great majority of deaths I have seen are due to that, NOT the plane itself. All he had to do was throw that switch and wait for the probe to warm up so the engines would make full power.

This is so crazy! My dad was also supposed to be on this flight. He worked for GTE Telenet (same company Joe Stiley and Nikki Felch worked for). He got stuck in a meeting at the office in Vienna, VA, and then ended up stuck in traffic on the GW Parkway, so he missed the flight. Joe and Nikki were seated in the back of the plane because they were smokers. My Dad's seat was near the front of the plane. Of course this was well before cell phones, so there was no way for my dad to let my mom know he wasn't on the flight. I got home from school after a very extended bus ride (due to the weather) to find my mom absolutely distraught, watching the news coverage of the accident. It was at least another hour before my dad was finally able to get to a phone to call home. Somewhere I still have my dad's ticket.

04:27 The 1st officer should have caught the oversight of the de-ice mechanism. 38:17 Unbelievable~! Truly harrowing, I cannot believe that sensational rescue from the time the helicopter arrived only took 10 minutes ~ that's like a crazy, crazy warping of time; they went back and forth so often and all the slippage and the people on the shore disengaging the rescue rope and whatever; I cannot fathom it. 37:18 Devastating~!! Arland was just GONE. My heart sank. 40:26 Roger Olean and Lenny Skutnik, Arland Williams, Jr., and Gene on that skid ~ three heroes and of course the helicopter pilot, Don!! 43:41 Triage is something else too, how they figure out everything so quickly and in coordination. Look at what the shivering man is going through, omg he is like rocking the bed. This continues to be an inspiring story and will be for years to come. Ms. Moore's tale is so wholesome placing a sort of rainbow around it. Bless all involved and R.I.P. all who perished.

How creepy is it that "Twister" was made 3 years before this and actually had a based in a true events....that kid and his mom using the underpass and she got swept away just like Helen Hunts dad. 🤯💔

I was wondering the same thing! Thanks for asking! You would think they would check for typos in the title before they posted it.

For a Company to not only share about Aircraft Disasters you would think they would know when they get something wrong like say the Title... It's listed as a 747 Crashes into a Bridge in Washington DC!" Then, in the intro it tells everyone a Boeing 737" crashes into the 14th street bridge in Washington DC!"

Definitely NOT a 747 lol. A Boeing 747 could even operate into or out of Washington's National Airport.
