@grizzlycountry1030
@grizzlycountry1030 13 күн бұрын
I marched and jogged on broken ankle in Marine Corps basic training for about a month. Broke my fibula to be exact. Got tripped up in fog and fell in formation run resulting in being trampled. Corpsman/medic sent me to what used to be called Balboa Naval Hospital. Navy doctor merely looked at my leg and diagnosed it as cellulitis. Prescribed antibiotics and 1200mg ibuprofen then sent me back. Had trouble keeping up in physical training and especially on runs. I was on every drill instructors radar, but refused to give up. About a month later my ankle swelled so bad that I couldn't get my boot on. They tossed me in a truck and drove me back to navy hospital. This time the doctor I had sent me for xray. Doctor told me my fibula leg bone had broken and was trying to fuse together unfortunately not perfectly set so they'd have to rebreak it, set it right and put me in cast. He explained to the drill instructor with me that I had to have been in absolute agony for the last month. The drill instructor told me that they thought I couldn't hack it, but now they knew that I was the tough SOB the Marine Corps needs. Also told me I'd be sent to a medical platoon and recycled to a new platoon when I healed, but wherever I go they will know the hell I endured. True to their word in the medical platoon a drill instructor would go over what I needed to learn to be ahead when I went to new training platoon. Then when I was sent to new training platoon a drill instructor accompanied me to make sure they knew. I never got smoked individually, but I did get smoked with whole platoon. I kept up in training and passed everything. After graduation I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps fighting terrorism, before finding my wants in life had changed and decided to get out.

It's strange how at school, they only teach us how to survive in a society that people 'created', the modern society, working 9-5 jobs and paying tax, which is not the complete reality of life because natural environments are a part of life and we should be educated about survival in these environments.

The everglades is no place for an over-confident arrogant New Yorker. I live in a very rural area in Maine. It's mostly dense evergreen forests and farmers fields. My property is a 68 acre mix of both. I've grown up spending time in the woods. One of the most important lessons my dad taught me about roaming the wild is to ALWAYS familiarize myself with the terrain BEFORE exploring it. So that means looking at maps (Google Earth is pretty useful in that regards) and identifying landmarks that can be used to guide me on my way. I'm 35 years old and that single piece of advice has worked to keep me from getting lost so far.

Sadly this brought to mind the family that lost their 2 year old to a gator at Disney. They were from somewhere up north. They ignored all of the "no swimming " signs and thought it would be great to wade on the shoreline. Anyone from Florida knows that where there is fresh or brackish water there are gators...period. Disney had pulled hundreds of nuisance gators out of that same lake for years and didn't know they had to put up Gator signs....apparently those signs were needed, and have since been put up. I check my gear every time before leaving and bring enough for days including extra socks and shirt, towels, batteries, snake bite kit, meds, lighters and the rest. Plus empty thermos to fill with spring water along the way. My rules are never go off trail and plan it to be getting back in my car by 4 pm. The sun “sets” in the woods much earlier than actual sunset. I’d NEVER cross water like that. If lost, always follow the river because it eventually leads out of there. You can’t follow the sun under the woods’ canopy. Know the layout of the area if you’re gonna bushwhack. I don’t hunt but hike in the woods mostly alone so that makes me take extra precautions. I’ve never had anything happen but an ex bf went off trail and spent the night out there. Forestry will probably search on four wheeler and helicopter so be listening and have lights ready. Lay on the ground if you find an open area with lights shining up and on you so the helicopter has more body surface to see than just seven inches of the top of your head. Pretend you don’t have a phone. Relying on it out there is a bad idea. Hopefully you could go high and call but then they still have to find you...so be along a river

Being along a river might be good in 3 seazons but not in Winter, I think. Two hikers in the country of Türkiye in the Bursa city on mount ULUDAĞ were lost several years ago and they followed the survival protocol of "Following a river which will hopefully lead you to civilization." but they were found frozen to death, along the river. If they had made a shelter and waited on the mountain for a helicopter I think it would be better. What are your thoughts ?

Either another reason caused him to get lost and he was to embarrassed or he had something in his system and he actually passed out when he sat down and not went to sleep. Either way he's dead so all respect to him. I don't necessarily find the nap in a dangerous place odd I find the deep pass out for multiple hours.
