Fun fact about the Orient logo : the lion on the left symbolizes the company, while the second lion symbolizes their dealers and partners. The crown that can be seen above the shield symbolizes the customer. In other words, the emblem is supposed to represent the Orient’s respect for its customers and the desire to provide them with quality products.

great review! i've owned this watch for about 4.5 years and it has been performing perfectly. i had a friend regulate it for me and it holds at about +/- 5 seconds day and i'm fine with that. The crown is a bit hard to grasp but no big deal and the bezel is hard to turn HOWEVER if the watch is wet especially under the bezel, it turns super smoooooothly, makes sense since it's a diver watch even though it's not ISO rated. I've only ever owned 2 dive watches, my Ray 2 and a Mido Ocean Star, the Mido was beautiful and a better watch all around on paper, however it's gone and the Ray 2 is still around.

The initial accuracy was plus 12 seconds per day but over the months of wearing it, it now is minus 2 seconds per day for the last month. So, I think it has settled in. One of the reasons I bought it was the AWESOME lume. It is readable 8 plus hours, so when I'm in bed, I always know what time it is. For me, that's a very important thing to know.

I do not have a small wrist and like a snug fit so it fits like a glove on the tightest setting. I can barely tell it is Blue except in very bright light at an angle. The crown is awful but I should not have to mess with it too much. I noticed that they have really cleaned up their movement from your video. The older ones look kind of shabby. The new one looks shiny and has their name on it. Very good touch. I am not going to baby it. You should see my 1980's SK Diver with the Plexiglass Crystal. Great video and very comprehensive overview. With the SKX out of production officially and climbing to crazy prices, this is definitely now the king of the budget diver segment (I see anywhewre from $115-$140). I've owned this watch for over year, no problems with the crystal and a solid performer. I upgraded the strap to a 316L stainless steel oyster style strap with solid end links, and it's just great - people definitely think it's a serious watch. I recently thought about selling it, but frankly there are few things that would really be an upgrade unless you want to go up to an Oris Aquis or Longines Hydroconquest.

Thanks for the review on the Orient Ray II. I purchased one and have had it about two months now and love it. I have been keeping an eye on the crystal based on your review. So far no scratches and I wear it almost daily. I had the Invicta Pro Diver, which is a great watch given the price point, and decided to pass that one on to my grandson as his first diver and kept the Orient. Yes, I like it that much more. The movement has been running about 5 seconds a day fast, which is very impressive for a watch at that price point. The Invicta was running about 10 seconds a day fast. The Orient is a far better watch than the Invicta but for about $60 more in cost I guess that stands to reason.

@@WondersofWatchdom I wanted to give you an update now that I am into the 6th month of owning the Orient Ray II watch. So far no scratches in the crystal, which is an absolute miracle for me as I tend to be rough on crystals. However, I have changed my habits on watch wearing to help preserve the crystal since I spent about $300 on watch crystal replacements and services for the other watches in my collection. Yes, I tend to be a little picky. I just received today the Orient Kamasu with the sapphire crystal. I also ordered it in blue based on your review of the Ray II since the Kamasu offered the same blue dial and bezel. It is an absolutely beautiful watch. I don't know how I missed it but as far as the spring bar comments you made. As far as I am concerned I am in agreement with you, with no issues with them, and these Orient watches are the easiest watches I have had in adjusting the bracelets to my size. I also agree that if people are bending them they are doing something totally wrong. My grandson has been taking excellent care of his Invicta Pro Diver, I did polish some scratches out on the crystal for him while he was out visiting for the holidays, and none were too over the top and were normal for a watch being worn every day. His birthday is in July and I am going to order him the Kamasu from Orient, the trick will be to find out what color he would prefer without giving away what his birthday present will be. @@tomu-s2075 ok. Now I know you are certainly speaking fanboy biased nonsense. Have you ever held any of these watches in your hand? I am no fan of tag, but the cheapest tag heuer is better than any Mako in any measurable way. This is a quartz watch, so U can’t compare it’s movement to the automatic one in the mako, but that being said, the quality of this watch’s case and bezel are far superior to that of the Orient. And by the way, a quartz watch is more accurate, and shock resistant than an automatic, so depending on what metric you are using, you could argue quartz is better. And if you think that the Mako’s movement is much more expensive to manufacture because it’s automatic, let me tell you that you’d be surprised as to what little difference there would be. What are you going to say next, that the Mako is better than a Tuna because of its quartz movement? I haven’t owned a hydroconquest, but I do have a regular 300m conquest which is basically the same watch without a bezel and... please you can’t even compare the mako to that watch. Longines itself, as a company part of the Swatch group, produces mid tier luxury level watches which are beyond anything Orient produces and that includes the Orient Star line, which are very good in quality albeit a bit overpriced at times at retail prices. Perhaps you’d be better served comparing Makos to Certina, Tissot, Hamilton, watches, but a Tissot sea star for example with a ceramic bezel, power matic 80 movement 300m for around 600.00 usd is a far better buy than a mako USA II (probably mako’s best) at 315.00 usd.The mako is very well priced at 300-350 and that is what it’s worth. Come on man, the Mako isn’t even a true divers watch, but rather a diver-styled watch. The only thing you can argue about The Mako, is that it is a hell of a watch for the price, but saying it’s better than watches costing in excess of 1,000 is ridiculous. That is unless invictas become that highly priced. By the way, an invicta (yeah, I know)89260B with a Seiko NH35A movement, at around 100.00 is a hell of a bargain and in spite of the stigma associated with this brand, in quality it is on par, if not slightly better than the mako.
@hantms3 жыл бұрын
While it's not a $1000 watch, it WILL stop you from wasting money on one because the improvement is so insignificant. Time and again I've held watches like a Longines Hydroconquest, Tissot Seastar, Mido Whatever that are in the $800 range and thought.. "Myeah.. that's not all too different from my $100 (at the time) Orient Ray". So this watch saves you money. Until you can afford an Omega or Tudor or something. ;)

I enjoy all your videos. One feature I hear popping up very often though is the screw down crown as the mark of a 200m or more dive watch. As a retired oceanographer who has spent decades designing, fabricating and deploying deep subsea equipment, I can inform everyone that the main functional purpose of a screw down crown is to prevent the crown from being pulled out inadvertently while under water. Even then, if a crown is pulled out under water and the captive O-ring stem seal is designed properly, it will still provide a 100% reliable seal. A properly designed and implemented O-ring seal will become more and more water resistant as hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure increases up to the point where the O-ring ruptures. I pity the diver at a dept where that occurs as they will most likely be dead. Helium pressure equalization will most likely become more of a factor than O-ring integrity at depths where O-rings may fail. Even dive tanks and regulators rely on a simple O-ring.

While the Orient Mako II and Ray II are great watches, the Kamasu takes them to another level for not much more money. The Kamasu offers a sapphire crystal, something lacking on the Mako and Ray. The Red sunburst dial Kamasu is also quite striking. MSRP is $280, but they can often be found for just under $200 from various sellers.

Orient will always have a place in my watch collection. The Ray2 is what got me into watches and that’s because I had a Milgaus before it that I sold.

I came across this after looking for a Seiko 5 and I’m in a bit of a dilemma. As much as I love dive watches I want something with a reliable movement and is pleasing to the eye and At the moment I’m very tempted by this as I’ve heard nothing but good things about Orient

I own the Ray Ii Raven. Pretty watch. This isn't a $1k watch however - pressed clasp, hollow end links, mineral crystal. Nope. And I agree 100% on the crown. I wind it every night - so I can grab and go if I want, and it's not fun. And my crystal is a little scratched as well. The most fun part of the Raven is the black face and the black second hand with the red tip. It looks like the red tip is floating all by itself as it circles the dial. I'd say this watch is priced about right. This watch is beat up all over by my similarly priced Chinese Special Cronos No Time To Die diver - sapphire crystal, great bezel action with ceramic insert, wonderful silky crown action, lovely milled clasps and solid end links. Ok, maybe the logo on the Orient is better as well... you got me there. Now that's a watch punching above it's weight. The in-house movement on the Orient is probably it's biggest draw, although the NH35 ain't no slouch.

Good review, you sound like a watchmaker or someone who knows about the mechanics of watches. I'm considering buying either a ray 2 or kamasu and can't decide which to get. It seems the only real quality issue with these watches is the crown. I wish orient would address that. Overall though, the Orient brand has a strong appeal to me. I like Japanese watches and cars, and their culture in general - at least from a distance (which is the only way I perceive it, I haven't visited yet). Too bad about Seiko, a brand which is "in the dog house" in my books. The SKX's are nice but prices are not reasonable anymore. And recently while visiting my favorite watch shop in my town, I was shown a "limited edition" 300m waterproof diver watch which had a "tuna" case. It disappointed me to see that Seiko has cheapened that iconic watch by making so many "cheapened" versions of them. I don't want one anymore.

A very comprehensive look at the ray 1st time iv'e seen your channel, no spring bar probs the issues iv'e had were on delivery gaining +25 daily ,the crown & stem failed within months (decoupled) & the occasional bezel jam, being the Kamasu no crystal issues. Since regulation its my most accurate auto running well within cocs parameters as or the crown/stem thing Orient parts are a nightmare to acquire ..the logical move would be to ditch the crown guards & larger crown, all that said its stilll one of my fave's.

Excellent interesting very detailed and informative review of this watch. This was on my list but I have a Casio Duro, 2 Vostoks, a Pagani Submariner homage, a Citizen Eco-drive, a Steeldive Captain Willard homage ... so now I think I will wait instead of getting this and get a better dive watch (Zelos or Helm).

Mine has 0 beat error out of the box too. I was pleasantly surprised so it seems Orient is actually regulating the movements at factory. There is several versions of the bracelet because my clasp is slightly different.

Interesting comments about the spring bars. I own an Orient Excursionist GMT, which is a heavy weighted watch with a similar band. I’ve replaced the spring bars several times because they bend and break. I think it has to do with the combination of the thin spring bars, heavy watch, and most of the stress is placed near the center of the bars due to the watch band design.

I'm a new subscriber and your review was spot on. And I had this watch since December 2017. And replaced the crystal with sapphire in January 2018. Using a 2.5mm spring bars with a NATO strap.

Excellent vid! Imo... Orient Kamasu (swap out the clasp... $5 Aliexpress) is the #1 Best Dress-Diver ever made for the money. Nobody sane unscrews a crown when wet. Easy bezels kill. The #1 best professional/combat diver costs less... is less accurate... never needs service... but definitely needs a $3 Aliexpress strap... Russian Vostok Scuba Dude Amphibia. (Note: A bezel that rotates both directions is an ornament. In the case of the Russian above, it also serves structural purpose.)

Best review I’ve seen of this watch. Lots of interesting new insights too. I can’t decide between this one or the original Mako 2 (not the USA). Love the look of both and the fabulous blue sunburst dial.

I think you may have just gotten one with a less than spec crystal. I have the exact same model and have no issues with mine. You can get a sapphire replacement for about $35 if you chose to do so. After mine broke in; it runs about +5 to +9 seconds per day. WAY better than my SKX.

Nice watch, I think its well worth it. There is alot of people who feel entitled to put something down because you did not spend a fortune on it. It justifies there need to show everybody there spending of great wealth.

Amazing watch for the money, I've got several Rays and a Mako, it's arguably the only watch a collection needs. I do have the original Ray Raven, nothing to do with changing the bracelet, the spring bars kept bending for some reason, my jeweller said the diameter was undersized for the weight of the watch, they tried to fit larger bars, to increase the strength, but the hollow endlinks and/or the recesses wouldn't accommodated. I haven't had the same issue with the others, but the watch forums do contain threads from experienced watch enthusiasts (thousands of posts), mentioning this issue. I do have more watches than I'd like to confess to now, and always regulate, replace batteries, resize/replace straps myself; a great hobby.

I have the orange Ray. Granted the smaller crown makes it harder to set. But it also reduces the crown digging into my hand. The bezel is tight but it is definitely not gonna get knocked around in the water. Overall it's a great watch.

Budget watches are always a gamble in terms of accuracy. For Japanese movements if they perform good or excellent, and for Chinese movements if they perform good or can be considered a dud, lol. I was lucky with my NH35s, one is plus 3 seconds/day dial up, the other one 8 seconds/day dial up, both better when worn (+1 and +4 or something). Out of the box, without any further regulation. Never tried an Orient, but that crystal would honestly drive me mad.

It´s a nice watch and the Ray is my favorit, but I total agree with the two issues (crown&bezel). Orient should bring a V2 version!

Finally, now I know why they call it the Ray. Cool. I love my orange Ray II. Agree on all the negs, but my bezel has loosened up after 2 yrs of near daily use. I've been regulating mine of late, as after =/+ 10 sec since I first got it, it's now running quite fast. Finally getting past my fear of opening her up. I'm doing it by feel, so it's a great learning experience going through the process, especially since it's a fairly inexpensive entry level auto. In truth, I love it more than my $1,200 Marathon. Cheers

You must have got a bad crystal. I've had mine for a few years and no scratches so far, but I do have some nicks on the bezel. I replaced the bracelet for a Strapcode one and it's a big upgrade in the look and feel of the watch. I would love it if you did a video on the Luch one hander or just one handed watches in general. I put a jubilee bracelet on mine and it's my around 6 o clock watch on days when time isn't that important and I'm just drinking beer on the porch.

I have the RayII Raven. Although I didn't have a problem with the bezel, I didn't like the way it looked. I replaced the Bezel with a pvd coated (satin black), the bezel insert with a flat ceramic stealth insert, and a dd Sapphire with blue ar crystal. I'm very happy with this watch and my only 2 complaints, finding another pvd coated bracelet with solid end links and the crown.

I own the Ray Raven II and I love it. I also own a Neptune, Mako XL and a Kanno. I likes me Orients 😂. The Neptune is a stunning watch for the price it's in the 400 to 500 CAD range but it's powered by the caliber 40N5A, the same movement used in Orient's Gen 2 Pro Saturation Diver priced over 1000 USD. I enjoy them every bit as much as my Seikos. BTW I live in Vancouver . Your video have a real BC vibe 😁💗

I had no problem with the crystal scratching excessively nor do I have a problem turning the bezel, even with wet hands. Maybe you happen to get a lemon but no issues with mine. If your bezel is a little stiff, a few drops of WD-40 around the bezel can help loosen that up.

You can easily adjust the stiffness of a bezel by prying it off and bending the click spring to desire. This sounds complicated but is in fact extremely easy. The bezel can then be put back on by placing it on the watch and pressing the watch face down against a book
