This is awesome. We need more reviews of paints like in general but especially paints like Vallejo.
@nameisbad Жыл бұрын
Why especially Vallejo? they are essentially outclassed now by ak interactive 3rd gen which are way way way way more durable and seperate a lot less if at all.
@stefan020290 Жыл бұрын
@@nameisbad huh than I must have gotten the bad ones. Laser Magenta tends to crack if you paint over it (used it as a foundation for yellow). And their metallics seperaten almost immediately on a wet palette. They do have fine colours but I would never say they are outclassed by AK as their paints also come with their own issues.
@nameisbad Жыл бұрын
@@stefan020290 It's generally not a good idea to put metallics on a wet palette, because outside of one brand (sc75) it messes with the paint in ways that are undesirable. Even then the metallics you should be using (vallejo metal color) are the kind you never put on a wet palette. AK interactive is most likely not the reason it cracked, either you messed up using an air drier, the primer cracked or you added something volatile to it. I don't paint much now miniature wise as I've moved onto exclusively painting on canvas with oils and acrylics, but I thoroughly tested most the brands and I'll be real the community of miniature painters aren't exactly people I'd hold to their word. It's such a tribal place, where brands matter more than results, and people say what they feel with very little knowledge or testing. Like take scale 75 scalecolour, the amount of people who think it's bad because of first impressions is wild, thankfully it built a strong reputation later. I've got people who've linked youtubers saying they said x or y so it must be true, when these same youtubers don't even know the difference between desaturation and darkening. I've seen so many shills, bad faith marketers, unprofessional rivalries, idiotic and sometimes dangerous advice, I've seen people in a closed small room spraycan prime a large model with no open window and no mask, I've seen a bunch of adult role models glorify licking plastic off brushes because they are too lazy to get their shit together and be responsible, they feel fine i'm sure but when they read up on the new research on the effect of plastics in our systems on fertility and miscarriages i'm sure their tune would change, tho i'd bet they'd rather go into denial. I've literally done the level of testing products that involve months, from lightfast tests involving sunlight on a window for months, to trying to literally break paints to see what they can't handle. But I've also had someone whose "tried painting on model with a brand" tell me a product is bad/good so I guess they know their shit right? If you haven't put in the insane effort I put in to see if the brands paints are good, please just take my word on it, because more often than not a paint performs badly in a good brand because of an unknown or outside influence. Like trovarion for example was utterly cringe saying his ak interactive reactivated contrast paint when it's the other way around and anyone whose spent enough time with ink based products like contrast paints know they can reactivate dried acrylic layers due to a chemical in them. My point, you probably aren't an expert, the people most of us in the hobby think are experts, really really aren't, they are winging it. With the exception of vince venturella. He puts in the work, he's earnt his salt two times over.

Love the wood grain from Vallejo. I find though it looks better over a brown paint undercoat. Either way looks great. Highly recommend it.

Been using this product for years, and I love it; it's certainly unusual - not quite a wash, not quite a paint. Its not really that similar to contrast paints either. Anyways, used over their Mahogany Brown, gives a really rich, deep finish :)
@sweatilaa5325 Жыл бұрын
Did you also ruin your paint job the first time you used Woodgrain? And Smoke for that matter. Great products when you realize that they are a fair bit different from both washes and regular paints. Btw, how much do you tend to thin your Woodgrain? I tend to try to get a slightly thicker wash consistency and then paint more layers rather than doing it too thick. But I still mess up fairly often when I try to master these two strange paints :/

Thanks for the video. Ill be interested to see how it comes out in the end. Do you feel it was really a lot different than using a brown contrast paint?
@swordnsteele7122 жыл бұрын
'Really different,' no, as they are both thin, transparent, and there are nice browns in the Contrast line that make for lovely wood, but there were minute differences, yes. I'll paint the boat again (once I get my restock of the boats on the shelf) with one of the Contrasts that would work as a wood as well and compare properly :)

Very similar in consistency but the Wood Grain has a longer dry time, a more satin finish, and its viscosity felt a tiny bit more thick/gel like than Contrasts, which feel more liquid

@gregorydillon91672 жыл бұрын
Did you try any on a flat, not textured surface?
@swordnsteele7122 жыл бұрын
I did, and you can mimic wood if you use long, straight strokes, making sure to perfect the look of long planks in that first layer (if you take a long time to do that, you can use Retarder medium to slow down the drying so you can work with it until you're satisfied) though I would suggest creating a textured surface on or over the flat surface instead since that would be simpler 🤷♀️

In many cases, yes, in other cases they can be just as thick, depending on the paint. The Model Color Gloss White that I applied to my nails before the video is an example of a thicker paint that is just as thick or thicker in some cases as Citadel Bases
